This invention relates to an eye shield adapted for use in protecting the eyes for various types of work and for instance, welding, grinding, metal pouring, for example.
It is especially aimed to provide a structure having a mounting frame or harness relatively to which the protecting means may be swung as a whole to and from operative position, and a construction utilizing novel means for the minute adjustment of the lens-carrying frame and for the fastening of the lens in such frame.
The more specific objects will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved eye shield;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view primarily in side elevation and partly in section, taken on the plane of line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the plane of line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary end elevation of the lens-carrying or protector frame, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of a modified form of side or cheek piece.
Referring specifically to the drawing, a suitable mounting frame or harness is provided as at Ill adapted to fit or rest on the top of the head. For example, such frame may have a horizontal arcuate member H, a vertical arcuate member |2 riveted or otherwise fastened at its ends thereto as at l3, and a short arcuate member l4, riveted or otherwise fastened as at I5 and IE, to the members l2 and I, respectively. Said members H, l2 and I4 may be made of any desired, preferably flexible material. A soft band of leather or the like may be provided as at I! over the front portion of the member II. In order to better secure said harness H1 in place, an elastic band |8 is preferably employed, being anchored at opposite ends to the section II, one end being detachable and adjustable as at I9.
Suitably pivoted as at 20 to the section II are side or check pieces 2|, preferably of transparent material, and for instance celluloid. If desired, spring washers 22 may be provided about the pivot elements 20. At any rate, the pivotal connection at 20, frictionally holds the side pieces 2| in adjusted positions, although permitting them to be swung on the pivots.
The lens-carrying protector frame or hood is provided at 23, being made of any desired material for instance aluminum or other metal, hard rubber, Bakelite or the like. Such frame carries a lens as at 24 and it has a marginal flange 25 extending completely around it, which is cut out 5 as at 25 and 27, to fit the forehead and is further notched as at 28, to fit and-rest on' the bridge of the nose.
The sides of such flange 25, specifically indicated at 29, have rivets or other fastenings 30 10 passing therethrough and also passing through enlarged openings 3| in the side pieces 2|. The openings in the end members 29 through which rivets 3!) pass are indicated at 32 and are preferably vertically elongated and such end pieces at the rear are notched as at 33. Spring members are employed at 34 which are generally of U shape and receive the end pieces 29 therein, the bridge of such springs extending into the notches 33. Said rivets 30 pass through the arms 35 and 20 36 of such spring members 34 and the arms 36 at their forward ends tend to spring away from the adjacent end piece 29 and frictionally engage the side edges of the lens 24 to releasably hold it in place. 25
Said arms 35 extend outwardly beyond the side or check pieces 2| and terminate in grips 35'. Inwardly of such grips, said arms 35 have lugsv 31 struck outwardly therefrom. Said lugs are adapted to engage any opening of a series of 30 openings 38 provided in the side or cheek pieces 2| Said openings 38 may be arranged in any desired manner and in one or more rows, relative sliding movement of the side pieces and frame 23 being permissible due to the enlarged 35 slots 3|.
Said slots 32 and 38 may be of any desired shape and arrangement and as shown at 38' in Figure 6, they may be rectangular or elongated.
In addition, the side members or cheeks 2| as 40 indicated at 2m in Figure 6 may be of any desired or preferred shape.
In the use of the device, the edges 26 and 21 fit against the forehead and the frame 23 rests on the bridge of the nose. The pivot members 20 occur substantially opposite the temples. The cheek pieces 2| and frame 23 as a unit may be readily raised or lowered by swinging movement on the pivots 20 and may even occupy a position on top of the head While the harness remains in 50 place on the head and protection for the eyes is unnecessary. The frame or hood 23 may be adjusted to any desired angle by pressing the grips 35' toward each other and thus disengaging the lugs 31 from the openings 38, following which 55 spring arms 35 and 36 of each the frame '23 is arranged in the proper position and the grips released so that the lugs 31 will engage theadjacent openings 38, thus effectively holding the frame or hood in the desired adjusted position.
