This invention relates `to 'articles of jewelry consisting ofabase member and a replaceable secondary member carri-ed thereby and'has for its object `the production `of `an article "of this Q .type Vwhich shall be lcomparatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple in structure, and wherein the secondary member can be readily mounted l upon and removed fromsaid base member. The e base member may be a ring, vanity case, watch case, or barv pin. The secondary member may be a design suchv as a heart, flower, etc.,an initial,
or a motto, phrase or pet name. s VFor thepurpoesev of illustratingmy invention 'I i have incorporated my'novel concept vin a'.ring l5 Which forms apart'hereof and which I will now `describedfV 's f l e e .e v
In saiddrawing Figure 1 isa perspective'view lofi each of the elements` which combinato form my novel ring.l :The cover is shown in the open position. Portions of certainV of the4 elements have been broken away for the purpose of greater clearness. i
Figure 2fis'arfront view of my novel ringfp'art of the same being shown in section. The section is taken alongthe line'2-' 2 of Figure l when the parts are assembled andthe cover is in the closed sbositiqn. 'f y I 'Y Figure 3 is a section taken `along the line 3-3 '30 of Figure 1 when theparts are assembled The full lines show the cover in the closed position and the dot and dash lines show the cover ,in the open position. e l e Referring `more particularly to thedrawing '35 wherein vsimilar'reference numerals denote sim# ilarl partys, reference numeral I designates my ring as a unit. y Th'ering I consists of a band portion 2, a tray 3, `a cover` 4 hingedly attached to said tray as at 5, a readily replaceable ,motto .45 frame 6, a picture tray 1,. a retaining screw 8,
a picture S, 'and readily replaceable initials I0. The band portion 2has a suitable aperture II formed in each of its sides. I'heinner end ofy each aperture II communicates with a recess I2 formed in the inner face vofthe band 2.fr Extending through each aperture II isthe shank I4 e attached to and forming a part of the initial Il). The shank I4 is split at its lower end to form the prongs I5 and is attached at its upper end tothe body portion I3 of the initial I0. As a result of the structure described in this paragraph I am enabled to doy theffollowing: i `(a) vSelect and quickly attach to ari'ng any one of a number of f initials,y numerals, Vdesign 55 :features or any other small secondary ornament structurewhich I haveA shownV onthe drawing A motto or other phrase 34 is inscribed upon 3 (ci. ca
` which one might desire to attach toa ring. This makes it unnecessary to carry a large assortment of rings each having only a single initial numeral or design feature attached thereto. s p
(b) One may readily remove any design upon 5 a ring and substitute therefor another design. l'I'his results in practically a new ring at a comparatively small cost.
The tray 3 is cast as an integral part of the band and consists of a oor portion I6r bounded 10 by the side walls I1, the front wall I B, and the hinge sockets I9. The front wall I8 has a lip 20 formedthereon which lfrictionally engages the inner face ofthe front wall 24 of the cover 4 for ,the purpose of holding the cover in its closed 15 position. f
. The cover 4 consists of the frame 2I and the transparent pane 22 carried thereby. The pane 22 may be of any transparent material desired.
I have used both glass and transparent organic substances now in general use for watchcrystals. The frame 2| consists of the side walls 23, the front wall 24 and the rear wall 25. The rear wall 25 has depending therefrom the hinge socket 26 which cooperates with the hinge Asockets I9 and hinge pin 21 to form the hinge connection 5 between the tray 3 and its cover 4. The inner faces 28 of the tray side walls I1 andthe inner face 29 of the tray front wall I8 are perpendicular. s e 30 The readily replaceable motto frame 6 is of such dimensions that it will snugly llt in the tray 3. The outside wall faces 30 of the frame 6 are vertical and the inside wall faces 3l are beveled.
the face 433 of one of the panels 32 of the frame 6. The picture tray 1 consists of a base portion 35 from which the Ypicture framewalls 36 extend upwardly.` The wall faces 31 of the base portion are beveled at an angle which is complemen- 0 tary to the angle of the wall faces 3| of the frame 6 andthe outside dimensions of the base 35 .are such that they will t snugly within the aperture 38 formed in the motto frame 6. The base portion 35 has an aperture 39 formed therein 4v through which the retaining screw extends.
My novel tray, motto frame and picture tray structure enable me to do the following:
Select and'quickly attach to the upper or signet portion cfa-ring any one of a number of mottoes, names of persons, or designs.
(b) Repeatedly remove any motto or design upon a ring and substitute therefor another dey sign or motto. f
To place ani/particular design upon the sig- 5g net portion of the ring it is only necessary to select the motto frame 6 having the desired motto, design, or initial thereon, then position the same within the tray 3, then position the picture tray within the opening 38 of the motto frame 6, then fasten the picture tray in place by means of the screw 8 which extends into the threaded aperture 40 formed in the base tray 3, then paste the picture 9 upon the oor 4| of the picture tray l. The complementary bevels 3| and 34 make it possible for me to hold the motto frame 6 and picture tray 1 in place by means of a single retaining screw 8 which extends into and threadably engages the threaded aperture 40 formed in the base tray 3.
The above disclosure is to be understood as being by the way of illustration only and not limitation, since many changes may be made in the structure herein shown without departing from the spirit of my invention.
