Description
' R. D. WHITAKER.
Curtain Fixture.
No. 213,269 Patented Mar. 11, 1879;
ATEN'I' FFICE.
ROSWELL D. WHITAKER, OF NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,269, dated March 11, 1879 application filed November 11, 1878.
the top, as may be desired, and by which the cords may be always kept at any desired tension, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawing, the figure shown is in perspective, showing the curtain rolled partially from both top and bottom.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, A represents a window-frame of the usual construction, near the top of which and on each side thereof, as shown, are secured by the stops a the cords b. B represent two curtain-rollers, which are designed to be attached to the ends of the curtain. At each end of the rollers they are provided with grooved flanges 0, in the grooves of which the cords are wound with one turn, and the lower ends of the cords are then secured to ti ghtener-stops d, those in the drawing representing the tightener stops or keys usually employed in a violin. At one end of each of the rollers are pivoted the pendent handles e, made of stiff material, by means of which the rollers may be operated, thereby avoiding the soiling of the curtains by handling.
it will be seen that by this arrangement of hanging and operating curtains they may be kept at any desired tension, rolled from the top or bottom, or from both ends, and all danger of soiling the curtain by handling is avoided.
By having the tightening-stops placed at the lower ends of the cords they are within reach of a person standing on the floor of the room, and the cords can thereby be readily tightened. By the rigid handles (2 the rollers can be drawn down or pushed up.
I am aware that it is old to support curtainrollers on stretched cords wound around them, and that such cords have been provided with tightening devices; but none of the constructions heretoforeused are as simple or convenient as mine.
What I claim as my invention is-- The curtain-fixture described, consisting of the rollers B, each having a rigid handle, 0, secured to one of its ends, the two cords b,
fastened at their upper ends to the sides of the window-frame, and passing around grooves on the ends of the rollers, and tighteningstops cl, to which the lower ends of .the cords are attached, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown. I
ROSWELL D. WHITAKER.
