ATTORNEY.
Patented Sept. 6, 1938 UNlTED STATES LATERAL REGISTRATION APPARATUS Yngve August Ferdinand Danielsson, Gothenburg, Sweden Application June 3, 1936, Serial No. 83,373 In Germany June 11, 1935 2 Claims, (Cl. 271-59) The present invention relates to apparatus for the lateral registration of sheets in printing presses and other machines of the kind in which a member movablelaterally in relation to the direction of movement of the sheets is pressed against the sheet and either pushes or pulls said sheets against lateral stops.
The object of the invention is to provide a simplified and reliable apparatus of this kind.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings wherein Figures 1-3 show a side view of the apparatus in different working positions and Figure 4 is a plan View from above of the apparatus.
At the one side of the table (not shown in the drawings) on which the sheets are forwarded to the printing press a frame I is provided, in which is mounted a shaft 2, to which, by means of a suitable driving mechanism not shown in the drawings, is imparted an oscillating or rocking movement. On one end of the shaft 2 is fixed a bevel gear wheel 3 which meshes with another bevel gear wheel 4 fixed to a shaft 5 which is rotatably mounted in the frame I. This shaft 5 carries a crank 6, to the free end of which, one end of an arm I is pivotally connected, the other end of said arm being fixed to one end of a link or rod 8. On a guide rod 9, connected to the frame I and disposed at right angles to the direction of movement of the sheets, is slidably mounted a slide ID on which an arm I2 is swingably mounted by means of a pin II, the free end of said arm I2 being connected to the link 8 by means of a crank pin I3. The swinging movement of the arm I2 is limited on the one side by a fixed abutment I4 rigidly connected to the slide, and on the other side by an adjustable screw I5 carried by the slide and serving as an adjustable abutment. To the boss I6 of the arm I2 is connected one end of a springy arm H, the free end I8 of which forms such an angle with the other portion of the arm I! that when the arm I! occupies the position shown in Figure 2 the end portion I8 rests entirely against the sheet I9, which is on the table provided before the cylinder of the printing press. Slide ID has mounted thereon and extending downwardly therefrom a supporting member 23 which in turn carries a supporting arm 25 extending therefrom. Said supporting arm 25 is so positioned from said slide ID as to support sheets I9 at the point directly below the contacting point of the end I8 of arm I! upon the sheet and thereby cooperates with end I8 in holding and moving sheets I9. A brake shoe 20 (see Figure 4) carried by the slide I0 is pressed by means of a Sp g 2| a nst a rod 22 which projects from the frame I and is disposed parallel to the guide rod 9.
The apparatus operates in the following manner.
When the parts occupy the position shown in Figure 1 and the driving shaft 2 is turned, the arm 6 will by means of the bevel gear wheels be swung in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 1. On account of the action of the brake shoe 20 the arm I2 carried by the slide ID will first begin to be swung to the position shown in Figure 2, in which the adjustable screw I5 prevents its further movement. The screw is so adjusted that the end portion I8 of the springy arm I1 will be pressed on the sheet I9 with such a pressure, that said arm I1 will be slightly bent. When the driving shaft 2 is further turned in the same direction the crank 6 will be moved to the position shown in Figure 3. By means of the arm I and the rod 8 the slide II] with the springy arm I1 is now moved perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the sheets. By means of the screw I5 the pressure with which the end portion I8 of the springy arm I'I rests against the sheet I9 may be adjusted that when the slide Ill moves the sheet I9 will be pushed by the end portion I8 of the springy arm I! until the edge of the sheet meets the fixed abutment 23. During its further movement the end portion I8 slides over or along the sheet to the end portion shown in Figure 3 without wrinkling the same. When the driving shaft thereafter is rocked in the opposite direction and the rod 8 consequently moves in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 3 the arm will be swung upwardly to the position shown in Figure 1. After the projection 24 of the arm I2 has contacted with the abutment I4 the slide II] with the lifted springy arm I'I will be brought back to the initial position shown in Figure 1.
By means of the screw I5 the pressure actuated by the arm I! against the sheet can be adjusted at will, and this pressure will remain unchanged even if the braking action of the brake shoe 22 changes.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. Improvement in apparatus for the lateral registration of sheets in printing presses and similar machines comprising a resilient sheet contacting arm, said arm having one end portion shaped to lie flat upon said sheets when in the lever arm, means for actuating said driving arm a pair of abutments mounted on said slide, one of said abutments limiting the swinging movement of said lever arm in such a manner. that as said driving member is moving in one direction said resilient arm end portion will first be brought against said sheet and subsequently; after the swinging movement of said arms has been arrested by said abutment, be laterally pushed by;
said slide as the driving member continues to move, said abutment being adjustably mounted on said slide for regulating the-pressure-of said resilient arm end portion on said sheets and the second of said abutments limiting the swinging movement of said lever arm in such a manner" that as said driving member'is moving in the second or opposite direction said resilient arm will be raised from said sheets and subsequently, after the swinging movement ofsaid arms has been arrested by said second abutment, -be drawnbackwards as the driving member continues to move.
2. Improvement in apparatus'for' the lateralregistration of sheets in printing presses and similar machines comprising a resilient sheet contacting arm, said arm having one end portion shaped to lie fiat upon said sheets when in the contacting position, a slide having said resilient arm pivotally mounted thereto, a supporting bar having said slide slidably mounted thereon, a brake mounted on and for retarding the movement of said slide, a supporting arm carried by said slide for supporting said sheets at a point directly below the contacting point thereof of said resilient arm, a lever arm connected to said resilient arm and pivotally mounted on said slide, a reciprocating driving member reciprocating said lever arm,-means for actuating said driving arm, means mounted on said slide limiting the swinging movement of said lever arm in such a manner that as said driving member is moving one direction said resilient arm end portion will first be-brought against said sheets and subsequently,- after the swinging movement of said arm has been arrested by said means, be laterally pushed by said slide as the driving-member continues to move, means for regulating the pressure-of said resilient arm endportion on said sheet when said first means is arrestingsaid swinging movement-of said arm, and a second means mounted on said slide limiting the swinging movement of said lever arm in such amannerthe swinging movement of said arms-has been arrested-by said second means, be drawn backward as the driving member continues to move,-
