Description

D. R. SI-IULTZ.
' Hat-Ventilator.
No. 212,752. Patented Feb. 25,1879.
N. PETERS, FHOTOJTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D C4 UNITED STATES PATENT DAVID R. SHULTZ, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN HAT-VENT! LATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 212,752. dated February 25, 1879; application tiled June 12, 1878.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID It. SHULTZ, or" the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mode of Ventilating Silk or other Stift' Hats, ot' which the following is a speciiication:
The invention relates to the ventilation of silk or other stiff hats, by the insertion of ne wire-netting in an opening made for that purpose in the crown ofthe hat immediately above the forehead.
The object of my invention is to provide for the free passage of air to the portion of the head inclosed by the hat, and thereby keep the head cool and comfortable.
The invention consists in providing ventilation for silk or other stiff hats in the following manner:
You take the hat, Land over the forehead, immediately above the brim, cut an aperture in the crown, as shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure I, A B, about one inch wide, extending around the front half of the hat. A band of line Wiremetting, of' brass or other wire, Fig. II, A B, and Fig. III, B A B', is
placed in the opening thus made, with the edges ofthe wire-nettin g inserted between the two gossamer or other layers of the crown and brim, respectively, and securely fastened. (See longitudinal section, Fig. IV, A B', and a and b, showing manner of insertion.)
The operation of the device is as follows: When the wire-netting is placed in position in the manner before stated, a hat-band ot loose material, that will allow the passage of air through it, is used, and that portion of the sweat-band covering the wire-netting is perforated, thus permitting the free passage of air to that portion of the head inelosed by the hat.
Vhat I claim, therefore, as myinvention is- The ventilation of silk or other stiff hats by means of the insertion and fastening in the crown of the hat, immediately above the brim, substantially as before described, of line wirenetting, made of brass or other material.
DAVID It. SHULTZ.
