Application October 25, 1937, Serial No. 170,927
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in clasps, or clips, for securing the wings of collars to gether against displacement from curling and other causes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an inexpensive device of this character which may be more quickly and easily applied than the present day clasps of commerce and which will securely hold the collar in desired position without tearing or otherwise mutilating the same.
Other, and subordinate objects, are also comprehended by my invention, all of which together d with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily apparent when the following description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved clasps,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a View in rear elevation.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, in the preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, the clasp thereof comprises a front jaw member I, of suitable light metal, having the form of an elongated shell including an outwardly bowed front wall 2, inwardly curved ends 3 and side walls 4. The side walls 4 are provided on each side of the transverse center thereof adjacent to said center with a pair of opposed ear-like extensions 5. The
' back of the clasp is formed by a pair of similar shell-like jaw members 1 and 8, each comprising a rear wall 9, a curved outer end I0 and side walls II. The members 1 and 8 are disposed end-to-end with the side Walls Il and ends I0 mating with the side walls 4 and ends 3 of the member I in clamping relation thereto at opposite ends of the member I respectively. The pair of jaw members 1 and 8 are pivoted, as at II', to the pairs of extensions 5, respectively,
' intermediate their ends for relative movement to swing the same into and from clamping relation to the member I. The adjacent ends of the jaw members 1 and 8 are pivoted together by means of a pair of elliptical or elongated eye members I2 and I3 formed on said ends, respectively, and a pivot pin I4 extended loosely through said eye members and held against endwise movement by the side walls II of one of said members. A pair oi tension springs I5 are interposed between the front walls 2 and the adjacent ends of the members 1 and 8 upon opposite sides of the pivot pin I4, respectively, and between said pin and the pivots II', respectively, whereby the members 1 and 8 are tensioned against movement from clamping relation to the member I. The mating side walls 4 and II and the ends 3 and I0 are serrated, as at I6, to facilitate gripping the collar, not shown, therebetween, the serrations being rounded to obviate tearing of the collar. Suitable keepers I1 on the member I and the members 1 and 8 anchor the springs I5 in location. Preferably the keepers I1 take the form of a pair of opposed yoke like members one secured to the inner face of the jaw member I and the other adapted to straddle the elliptical eye meml bers I2 and I3 and t around the same against the inner faces of the members 1 and 8, in detached relation thereto, so as not to interfere with the movement thereof.
As will be clear, by grasping the described clasp between two fingers and thumb of one hand with the fingers against the member I and the thumb against either, or both, members 1 and 8, intermediate the pivots II', and exerting the required pressure on said members, the jaw members 1 and 8 may be swung simultaneously against the tension of the springs I5 out of clamping relation in the desired degree. The ears of the collar may then be inserted between the members I and 1 and 8 and pressure released whereupon the members 1 and 8 will snap into clamping relation to member I simultaneously.
The construction, operation and advantages of my invention will, it is believed, be clear from the foregoing without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modications as fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto. 40
What I claim is:-
1. A clasp for collars comprising a front jaw member, a pair of rear jaw members pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on the front jaw member in end-to-end position for relative swinging movement into and from clamping relation with respect to the opposite ends of the front member, respectively, a pivotal sliding connection between adjacent ends of said pair of members compensating for relative swinging movement thereof and connecting said members together, said connection comprising a pair of elongated eye members on said ends, respectively, and a pin extending through said eye members,
elongated eye members on said ends, respectively, and a pin extending through said eye members, and means tensioning said pair of members against movement from clamping relation and comprising a pair of opposed yokes one xed to the front jaw member opposite said eye members to extend upon opposite sides of the latter, and the other spanning said eye members and slidably engaging the same and the adjacent ends of said pair of jaw members, and a pair of tension springs interposed between opposed ends of the said yokes.
