IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FOR LAMP-GLOBESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,619, dated February 25, 1879; application filed d January 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB J. Morrow and HORACE O. ALEXANDER, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaps for Lamp-Globes and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to caps for the globes of lamps and gas-burners.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved perforated cap or cover for the globes of petroleum-lamps; and the invention consists of the improved cover or cap used in connection with a glass globe made with a small opening at the bottom, which will fit closely to the lamp-burner.
This cap or cover, used in combination with the glass globe having the small bottom opening, permits the lan'ip-chimney to be entirely dispensed with, and at the same time the light is as strong and steady as it is under the most favorable circumstances with the globe and chimney. The perforated cap becomes very much heated and prevents the escape of all noxious and unpleasant gases.
Then a petroleum-lamp. is extinguished, or when it is turned down very low, and often at other times, it gives off unpleasant gases, and these are entirely consumed in passing through the perforations of the heated cap. The cap, in combination with the globe having the small base opening, affords a complete protection to the light. Insects cannot reach it, and it is impossible for it to set fire to curtains, and when used in store-windows the articles on liibited cannot take fire even if they hang directly over the light.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cap and glass globe attached to a lamp-burner, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the cap and globe.
The disk A is made of a perforated sheet of metal or other suitable material, or of wirenettiug, and it is provided with the vertical band or ring B, which just slides into the top of the globe O. The ridge 1) on the outside of the band B rests on the edge of the globe, and the catches b spring under the edge of the globe when the band B is pressed down into the globe and hold the cap in place. The band B projecting above the globe furnishes an opportunity for an ornamental finish to the top of the lamp, and the perforations of the disk A may be arranged in pleasing and fanciful designs.
The perforations scattered uniformly over the surface of the disk A cause the current of air to rise steadily and uniformly, and the flame is therefore steady and uniform, and does not flicker. What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the cap for the globes of lamps having the perforated disk and the vertical band, which slides within the opening of the globe, and is provided with the rim and catches for holding it in place, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the glass globe made with a small bottom opening which fits close to the burner and the improved cap consisting of the perforated disk and vertical band having the rim and catches for securing it to the globe, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
