Description

VALVE Filed Sept. 11, 1936 INVENTOR. L E. E 5551 BER.
7- igffimm ATTORNEYS! Patented June 7, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in valves, and has particular reference to a balanced valve or a valve wherein the pressures are evenly distributed so that there is no tendency for 5 the valve parts to open or close after once being adjusted.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is simple to manipulate and one which will not be affected by vibrations.
A further object is to produce a valve wherein the pressures will remain constant after once being adjusted.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
The figure is a vertical cross section of my improved valve.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a casting having a central bore 6. This casting 5 is attached to a casting l which has a bore 8 of a larger diameter than the bore 6. The casting 5 is provided with outlets 9 and H, both of which may be used or one may be plugged as shown at l2. The casting l is also provided with similar outlets l3 and I4 and one of these is shown as plugged as at I6. The inlet is shown at [1. Slidable within the bore 8 is a piston l8 which works against a spring l9. This piston is threadedly secured to a tubular extension 2| 35 slidable in the bore 6. Ports 22 are formed through the extension 2| at a point just above the piston 18. Slidably mounted within the extension 2! is a hollow dumb-bell piston 23 having ports 24 and a cross partition 26. A pressure 40 control ring 21 formed upon the surface of the piston 23 serves to close the ports 22 when in certain positions as will be hereinafter described. Secured to the top of the casting 5 is a plate 28 upon which is pivoted a handle 29 provided with a gear 3| which meshes with a gear 32. This gear 32 is mounted upon a shaft 33 to which is attached a threaded element 34 through the medium of a spline. This threaded element 34 is threaded into the lower part of the projection 50 36. The threaded element is rotatably secured to the cross partition 26. The customary packing rings are applied wherever necessary.
Assuming now that the parts are in the position of the figure, moving the handle 29 will rotate the beveled gears 3| and 32, the shaft 33 and the threaded member 34. Assuming that the direction of the handle is such as to cause the threaded member to move downwardly the efiect will be that the dumb-bell piston will move downwardly moving the pressure control ring In the accompanying drawing forming a part.
away from the ports 22, and consequently pressure within the piston 23 may pass through the ports 24 and ports 22 to the outlets 9 or II as the case may be, and thence into the pipes connected thereto. At the same time the pressure will force the piston l8 and extension 2| downwardly against the tension of the spring l9 until the pressure control ring 21 closes the ports 22, at which time the pressure will remain constant as long as the handle is not moved. Should pressure leak ofi, then the spring I9 will force the piston l8 upwardly opening the parts allowing pressure to buildup when it will again be closed to maintain the pressure.
To'release pressure the handle 29 is moved in the opposite direction until the pressure control ring is above the ports 22 at which time the pressure will pass to the outlets I3 and I4 and to the pipes connected thereto. Thus it will be apparent that as there is equal pressure on. all
sides of the moving valves it is possible to accomplish a very fine and easy adjustment of the pressure being employed or released, and when using such a device with friction clutch apparatus it is often desirable to control the pressure to a great nicety.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a
pair of castings secured together, one of said castings having a bore centrally positioned therein, the other of said castings having a bore in axial alignment with said first mentioned bore but of greater diameter, a piston movable in said second bore and having a tubular extension secured thereto and movable in said first mentioned bore, a piston movable in said extension, a pressure controlling ring carried on said second mentioned piston, ports formed in said second mentioned piston, and capable of discharging fluid from the interior of said second mentioned piston to a point within said extension, ports through said extension and communicating with outlets formed in said casting.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of castings secured together, one of said castings having a bore centrally positioned therein, the other of said castings having a bore in axial alignment with said first mentioned bore but of greater diameter, a piston movable in said second bore and having a tubular extension secured thereto and movable in said first mentioned bore, a piston movable in said extension, a pres sure controlling ring carried on said second mentioned piston, ports formed in said second mentioned piston, and capable of discharging fluid from .the interior of said second mentioned piston to a point within said extension ports through said extension and communicating with outlets formed in said casting, and means for moving said second mentioned piston through the medium of a rotatable handle.
3. In adevice of the character described, a pair .of castings secured one to the other, both of said castings having a centrally arranged bore in axial alignment with each other, one of said boreshaving a piston slidable therein, said pis-,
ton having a tubular extension slidable in the bore of the other casting, ports formed in said extension at a point adjacent said piston, spring means for normally maintaining said piston in a predetermined position, dumb-bell piston slidable in said extension, a pressure controlling ring carried by said dumbbell piston adapted to close said ports, a threaded member rotatably connected to said dumb-bell piston and capable of slidably moving said dumbbell piston with relation tosaid first mentioned piston and its extension.
