Description
"I. J. SAUNDERS.
Shoe-Fasteners.
No. 211,794. Patented Jan. 28,1879.

UNITED STATEs PATENT FFICE.
IRA J. SAUNDERS, OF DAVISVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
lM PROVEMENT IN SHOE-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,794, dated-January 28, 1879; application filed June 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,IRA J. SAUNDERs, of Davisville, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to an improvement in the style of shoe-fasteners patented by me on the 16th day of July, 1872, No. 129,255, in which the fastener is shown having a curved spring formed near both its ends, for entering the eyelet in the boot and shoe.
In operating with this fastener I have found that it required for its perfect operation means for holding the fastener in its horizontal position while attached to one of the eyelets of the shoe, so as to readily engage the opposite eyelet with the spring upon the other end of the fastener; and to this end my present invention consists in extending one end of the fastener beyond the spring, and bending it so as to pass through the leather near the eyelet, and thus hold the fastener horizontal by means of two bearings.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a shoe with the fastener attached. Fi g. 2 is a section of the shoe through the eyelets, showing the fastener in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
In the drawin gs,A Arepresenteyelets placed 1 in rows in the shoe near the edge of the opening. B is the fastener, having loops bent as shown at B forming springs yielding to the pressure of the eyelets when forced down upon the springs, and expanding when pushed through the eyelet. B is an extension upon one end, bent as shown, so as to enter a perforation in the leather near the eyelet, which may be formed by a punch made for the purpose, or out by the sharp edge of the fastener itself. The form of this extension is such that it holds the fastener in proper position in one eyelet to receive the corresponding eyelet on the other edge, which, when pressed down upon the spring, fastens the edges of the shoe together.
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastener having curved springs formed in it near both of its ends, for entering the holes or eyelets in a boot or shoe, and a reverted extension, B on one end, which is adapted to enter the leather at the side of the eyelet, as a means of securing the fastener to one side of the shoe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IR-A J. SAUNDERS.
