IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent, No. 211,462, dated January 21, 1879 application filed September 27, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. DOLE, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Gard-Case, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, showing at Figure 1 a perspective, and at Fig. 2 avertical section on line a b, Fig. 1, of my improvement as applied to a box having a tubular cover, and specially designed for holding cartes de visite and similar cards.

My invention has for its object to furnish a case or box, of paper or other suitable material, in which a sample of the contents may be exhibited in the cover, and to combine with this feature facility for advertising. By this means the exact character of the contents of any particular box among several may be known at sight, and the business-card of the manufacturer or dealer be presented in a prominent and attractive manner. I

The first object I accomplish by making the cover or upper part of the case (3 double, formedof pieces 1' G, to form a space, S into which the card to be exhibited is slid beneath the outer cover, G. This cover I prefer to be of glass and covered with some thin material, m, to leave one or more openings, S S.

In the present instance I have shown a box having its cover of glass partly covered by a thin material, as described but, if desirable, from economical or other reasons, the glass may be dispensed with and some other material having suitable openings S S substituted therefor. In this case the articles may be equally 'well exhibited, but not so well protected from injury.

The application of my improvement is not limited to the style of box shown in the drawing. It may be applied to other styles and adapted to exhibit various articles; but it is specially useful for putting up photographs and similar goods.

Having described my invention, I claim- The box-cover herein described, formed of two or more pieces, i G, to form space S and having oneor more openings, S S, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
