BOX STRUCTURE Filed Sept. 20, 1937 3 Sheets--SneeI 2 N. P. VAN WINGEN BOX STRUCTURE Filed Sept. 20, 1937 5 Sheets-Sheet 3 Inflllll:
stantialiy square ,fiaps`22 in alinement with which and between the same are relatively narrow flaps 23 outwardly beyond the scorings at I5.
With this blank construction the reinforcing flaps `I,I maybe bent inwardly against the inner sides of the ends 5, one overlapping the other as shown in Fig. 4 and the hand hole flaps at 1 bent inwardly through the openings at I3 and stapled in place as previously described. The end structure may be then bent upwardly about the scorings at 4 and the sides IB upwardly about the lower scorings 3, the flaps 20 turned inwardly toward each other to overlap the ends 5, as
shown in Fig. 2, whereupon said flaps 20 and the ends 5 with the reinforcing section II are stapled together. The flaps 22 are bent at rightangles to the flaps 2I and then the flaps 2I` and 23 turned at .right-angles to the plane of the top sections I9, the end flaps 22 coming inside of the end portions of the flaps 23 and being stapled thereto. This provides two top sections hinged to the sides I8 of the box at the scorings I4 and adapted to be turned inwardly, the slots at 6 and I2 in the end sections 5 and the end reinforcing members II receiving the inturned flaps 23 and the reinforcing corner portions 22 thereof, while the flaps 2| lie outside of the upper edge portions of the ends of the box (see Fig. 5).
With this construction of box the ends are very strongly reinforced. The holes through which the hands of those handling the boxes are inserted, at I3, are-strengthened and reinforced by the inturned and stapled flap sections "I, while the upper edges of said holes are rounded and broadened so as to make a smoother and wider bearing surface to come against the palms of the I bottom, this construction of box is one which is very easily reinforced by merely cutting a piece of paperboard stock to the right rectangular size and placing it within and against the upper side of the bottom of the box, lconnecting it in place if wanted; andn of course, either end or side flaps or both could be provided to the reinforcing bottom and stapled in place. However, such reinforcement is no part of the present invention and is mentioned only to show the adaptability of the box which I have invented to such reinforcement if it should be wanted.
The box structure is` one of an economical design, the blanks are cut with dies very rapidly, large quantity production may be had, the blanks may be shipped in flat form and very quickly and easily shaped into the completed box requiring only the stapling of the flaps 1, 20, and 22 after the blank has been bent along the scored lines to the proper positions.
The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms cf structure coming within their scope.
