(Cl. 242-77) My invention relates to metal reels provided, for example, for winding thereon of electric cables or the like; and certain of my objects, generally stated, are to provide a simple construction of reel of the minimum number of parts which may be manufactured at less'cost than similar constructions as hitherto provided, and shall present the desired degree of strength and durability; to provide improved means for securing the l0 outer end of the cable wound on the reel; and
generally to improve upon structures of this general character.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of a reel constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of a detail of the construction, the section being taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.

Referring to the particular illustrated embodiment of my invention, the reel shown comprises a hub portion 8 shown as formed of a cylindrical drum of sheet metal provided at its opposite ends with inwardly projecting annular flanges, the flange for one end of the drum being shown at s.
The reel also comprises heads represented generally at I0 and each comprising a centrally located arbor tube IIr surrounded by spaced apart rings I2 and I3 continuously welded thereto as yrepresented at I4 and I5, respectively.
Radiating from the arbor tube II and welded to the rings l2 and I3, as indicated at I6 and I1, respectively, are spokes I8 shown as of hollow sheet metal construction of substantially square shape in cross section.
V The spokes I8 extend outwardly against the Y tread of the head shown as formed of a ring I9 of T-shape in cross section, the head portion 20 of the ring forming the tread proper and its centrally located iiange 2I projecting inwardly toward the center of the head, the flange portion 5 2l extending into slots 22 in the adjacent ends of the spokes.
The spokes i8 are welded at the outer surfaces of their outer ends to the tread member I9 as represented at I 8a and at walls of the slots 22 10 to the flange of tread member I9, as represented of one of these walls at 22a, the inner sides of the spokes I8 being cut away a slight distance as represented at 23.
Located in the several spaces between the "15 spokes I8 adjacent their outer ends, is a circumferential series of plate-like gusset-forming members 24 having curved outer edges 25 at which they conformngly t against the curved inner edge of the iiange 2| of the tread member I9. 20 The gusset members 24 are welded, as represented at 26 and 2l to the inner edge of the flange 2| and at their ends to the sides of the spokes I8, as represented at 28 and 29, of one end of one of the gusset members 24. 25
The structure of head provided as described is of skeleton form comprising a hub portion, spokes, and a gusset-reinforced tread portion, it being my purpose in the designing of the reel for any given load, to gure these elements as taking all 30 of the stresses to be resisted by the head structure, it being understood from the foregoing that a relatively light tread member I9 may be provided in view of the engagement of the spokes therewith at given points and the provision of 35 the gusset members 24 which in eiect constitute inwardly extending extensions of the flange portion of the tread member thereby greatly stiftening and reinforcing this member, these gusset members also furnishing added service in caus- 40 ing the head structure to be durable and highly resistant to stresses, as they fill the spaces between adjacent spokes and thereby brace the latter.
It is desirable in constructions of this charac- 45 ter that the inner sides of the heads be sheathed at least over those portions thereof at which the cable wound on the reel would extend. This is provided for in the particular construction shown by the sheath represented at 30 shown as formed of a single piece of metal, though this is not necessary.
The sheath 30 which extends continuously over the spaces presented between they spokes and` over the inner faces of the spokes, extends at its 55 inner edge over the flange 9 on the hub portion 8, the outer circumferential edge of the sheath 30 being provided with an annular outwardly extending flange 3I telescoped with the inner annular edge of the tread member I9 as shown and thus extending between this edge and the outer portions 23 of the spokes I8, the member I9 and sheath 30 being tack-welded around the joint therebetween, as indicated at 32.
The sheath 30 is shown as cut away adjacent the periphery of the drum portion 8 to present an opening 33 through which to lead the inner end of the cable to be wound on the drum and connect it with the eye 34 of an eye bolt 35 secured to one of the adjacent spokes I8. This end of the cable is protected by a dished cover represented at 36 and thus presenting surrounding flanges the outer and inner ones of which are represented at 31 and 38. The cover fits over an outwardly extending flange 39 struck out from the metal of the sheath 39 adjacent an edge of the opening 33 therein and the flangeforming member 4D at the opposite side of the opening, and secured in place as hereinafter described, the cover being held in place by a bolt 4! passing through the flanges 31, 38, 39, and 49.
The heads IIJ and drum S are shown as rigidly clamped together by means of a plurality of tie rods 42 which extend through openings in the flanges 9 of the drum and through arcuate bars 43 of angle shape in cross section to which the members 49 are attached, as for example by welding them thereto, and disposed in a circumferential series in the spaces between adjacent ones of the spokes I8 and flatwise engaging the outer face of the sheathing 3l), thereby clamping the latter between thev arcuate members 43 and the iiange 9 of the drum, the ends of the members 43 being rigidly connected with the sides of the spokes I8 as by welding them thereto.
It will thus be understood that the reel may be constructed of relatively few parts and of relatively light weight, and still present the desired strength and durability.
While I have illustrated and described a par. ticular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may be variously mod iiied and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure `by Letters Patent, is:
l. A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section secured to said spokes with its central iiange portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and securedto said inwardly extending flange portion and reinforcing said tread portion.
2. A head construction comprising hollow radial spokes having notches in their outer ends, a tread portion of angle-shape in cross section one flange of which extends toward the center of the head and into the notches in the spokes,
and separate gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and secured to said inwardly extending iiange and reinforcing said tread portion.
3. A head Vconstruction comprising hollow radial spokes having notches at their outer ends, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section with its central flange portion extending toward the center of the head and into the notches in the spokes, and separate gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and secured to said inwardly extending flange portion and reinforcing said tread portion.
4. A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section secured to said spokes with its central flange portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and secured to said inwardly extending flange portion and reaching short of the circumferential portion of said tread portion and reinforcing said tread portion.
5. A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shapein cross section secured to said spokes with its central flange portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and positioned against, and secured to, that surface of said inwardly extending flange which faces toward the central axis of the head.
6. A head construction comprising radial spokes, .a tread portion of angle shape in cross section secured to said spokes, one flange of said tread portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate plate-like gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes, said gusset members and said inwardly extending ange being positioned, and secured together in edge-to-edge abutting relation, said gusset members reinforcing said tread portion.

A head construction for reels comprising radial spokes, a circular band tread portion surrounding, and welded to, the ends of said spokes, and stiffening plate portions between, and secured at their ends to, said spokes, said plate portions being rigid at one edge of each with the inner surface of and adjacent the central portion of said tread, said plate portions being deeper at the portions thereof substantially midway between the spokes than at the ends of said plate portions.
8. A head construction for reels comprising radial spokes, a circular band tread portion surrounding, and welded to, the ends of said spokes, and stiffening plate portions between, and secured at their ends to, said spokes, said plate portions being rigid at one edge of each with the inner surface of and adjacent the central portion of said tread, and with free, inner, substantially straight edges lying on chords of said tread portion.
9. A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section secured to said spokes Withits central flange portion extending towardV the center of the head, and separate plate-like gusset-forming members in thef spaces between said spokes and secured to said inwardly extending flange, said members being deeper at the portions thereof substantially midway between the spokes then at the ends of said members.

A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section secured to said spokes with its central flange portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate plate-like gusset-forming members in the spaces betweenk said spokes and secured to said inwardly extending flange and having inner, free, substantially straight edges lying on chords of said tread portion.

A head construction comprising radial spokes, a tread portion of general T-shape in cross section secured to said spokes with said central flange portion extending toward the center of the head, and separate plate-like gusset-forming members in the spaces between said spokes and positioned against, and secured to, that surface of said inwardly extending flange which faces toward the central axis of the head, said members having inner, free, substantially straight edges lying on chords of said tread portion.
