The bullet feed channel 43 of the projectile feeder terminates near the rear end of the auxiliary barrel 25 and the end of the reciprocating rod I slides past the inlet end of the feed channel, thereby pushing a bullet into the. auxiliary barrel.
The finger-engaging portion of the trigger shown in Fig. 2 is provided with two abutments 28, 23 mounted on a slide 3| 3 which is adapted to be moved in a longitudinal direction against the action of a spring 33. The movement of the slide 3| is limited by the extension 32, when pressure is applied to the abutment 28. However if the trigger is pressed by means of the abutment-'- 23, the extension 32 is shifted in such a manner as to permit movement of the slide 3| over a longer distance. A double armed lever 33 is pivotally secured to the slide 3|. The. forward end 34 of the lever 33 operates a push rod 35 and the latter co-operates with levers 33, 31. The lever 31 is provided with a projection 33 for looking the piston I connected with the piston 3.1 During the firing of the first shot the lever 33 is forced downwardly, so that its end 34 is moved out of engagement with the push rod 35, whereby the projection 38 is moved 'again in engagement with and locks the piston I immediately after the firstshot has been fired. If the trigger is forced back by means of the abutment 23, the
slide, 3| is pushed farther backward than the movement obtained by pressure on the abutment 28. Thus the lever 33 remains in engagement with the push rod 35 during the firing of the first shot but slides from the abutment 34 on to the abutment face 39 of the lever 33 and the triggr remains in its disengaged position, so that not only individual shots are delivered, but automatic firing takes place.
If the arrangement for practice firing is fitted into the gun, the lever 33 is frequently operated by the cylinder of the control piston in accordance with the construction of the gun and therefore it cannot be directly influenced by the moving parts of the discharge device (see Fig. 2). Therefore in cases of this sort, the compressed air'present in the cylinder I2 is utilized for setting the lever 33 for automatic firing. The compressed air is efiective at the moment when the piston 8 reaches its rearmost position by operating the lever 33 by means of a ball 40 and thereby effecting the adjustment from single firing to automatic firing. The ball 40 is arranged with a relatively tight fit in a transverse channel 4i of the cylinder l2 and the ball 43 is movable in said channel. The ball is secured in the channel 4| against removal by an'outer plate spring 42 and a constriction of the channel towards the inside.
In the new arrangement for practice firing, the projectiles are supplied solely by compressed air,-by allowing the air present in the control compartments of the discharge device to operate the bullet or projectile magazine. The latter is F in the form of a screw-wound pipe 43, one end of which extends intoa block 44 adapted to be secured to the gun, while the'other end thereof carries a socket 45 for the attachment of a charging chute 43 (Fig. 5). The socket 45 is adapted to be nofmally closed by a cap 41. The block 44 is secured to the machine gun by means ofa screw 4.8. A channel 43 establishes communicatioiibetween the interior of the piston-cylinder communicates by way of a pipe 53 with the end of. the projectile channel, which is located farther away from the gun-barrel. The channel 43 com- ,municates by way of a channel 5| with the projectile channel just behind the entry of the same into the'charging compartment. 52 designates a copper ring for tightly packing the compressed air channel. The charging chute 43 is'V-shaped in cross section and terminates in a charging pipe 53 which is constructed in such a manner, that the charging 'chute is slightly inclined towards the projectile channel. The charging pipe and the projectile channel are interconnected without any projecting edges or appreciable bends, so that the projectiles or bullets may move from the charging channel into the projectile magazine without meeting with any obstruction. 1
The new arrangement operates in the following mannerz-The breech is removed from the machine gun and in its place the discharge and control arrangement is inserted in simple manner. The auxiliary barrel and the bullet or projectile feeder shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are attached to the gun. Thegun is then ready for firing. If the trigger is pulled, the spring I2v becomes operative and causes the piston l to jump for-' ward thereby carrying with it the control piston 3, 8" and 3. When the piston-part 8 strikes against the pin I5, the compressed air valve I3 is opened and during its continued forward movement, the shoulder l3 of the control piston strikes against and moves forward the slide ll. During this operation, a bullet ,resting in front of the outlet of the bullet feeder is engaged by the rod I and pushed into the auxiliary barrel 25. If the control piston moves forward sufliciently far the rear edge of the piston-part 3' passes beyond'the ports l8 of the compressed air channel ll, compressed air will pass into the annular space around the piston-part 9 and through the channel l0 and to the bullet, which is hurled out by the force of the compressed air. Simultaneously or practically simultaneously, the ports I9 are uncovered by the slide I I, so that the compressed air enters the compartment in front of the control piston and forces the piston backward against the action of the spring". During the backward movement, the control piston again air passes through the latter and into the bullet feeder. Usually only a very weak force of the compressed air is necessary for operating the pneumatic bullet feeder and therefore itmay be advisable to provide outlets 23 in addition to the channels 45, or a vent may be arranged at any convenient'point in the compressed air' supply line leading to the bullet-channel.
The channel 43 is uncovered by the slide I l immediately after the rod I hasclea'red the outlet of the bullet feeder leading into the charging compartment. At this moment, the expanding air flows from the cylinder l2 into the bullet-magazine and through the channel 58. The air acts from the rear against the bullet and in view of the clearances between the bullets and the wallof the channel 13, the expanding air flows forward through the rows of bullets and also directly influences the bullets near the charging space. The expanding air also passes through the channel 5| and into the bullet magazine, thereby increasing the direct influence of the bullets near the charging space and slackening the bullets in the bullet channel. The bullets are thus prevented froni jamming. In order that the compressedair entering the bullet magazine will not leavethe gun by way of the barrel and thereby carry with it any bullet, a, vent H is provided at the point where the bullet magazine passes into.

This arrangement for practice firing by means 2 of .compressed air may be used either in pneumatic guns or it may be inserted in existing fire arms. In the case last mentioned, if small changes are made for adapting the practice arrangement to the space at disposal-in and to the operating members of the breech of the arm, the practice arrangement may be inserted without any reconstruction of the arm. Examples of such guns are machine guns of all calibers, light machine guns, machine pistols, semiand full automatic infantry guns, tank guns, tank defense and aircraft defense guns.
What we claim is 1. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, 2. piston movably arranged in said cylinder, a spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to force said pistonin the direction of fir- 4 ing, said cylinder having an inlet for the admission of compressed air into the cylinder arranged I in said cylinder near its forward end and controlled by said piston, said compressed air caus ing the backward movement of said piston against the action of said spring thereby producing a shock similar to the recoil of an actually firing gun.

a slide arranged in said cylinder in front of said piston and controlling said inlet, a valve controlling the admission of compressed air to said air channel, and means co-operating with said valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, said compressed air causing the backward movement of said-piston therebyproducing a shock similar to the recoil of an actually firing gun.
6. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in. place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a
piston movably arranged in said cylinder, said piston having a compressed air channel partly passing therethrough and open at the forward end of the piston, a spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to force said piston in the direction of firing, said piston having an air channel arranged therearound, said cylinder having an inlet establishing communication between said air channel and the interior of the cylinder in front of said piston, a slide arranged in said-cylinder in front of said piston and controlling said inlet, a, valve controlling the admission of compressed air to said air channel, and means on said piston operating at first said valve and thereafter said slide, said compressed air' causing the backward movement of said piston thereby producing a shock similar to the recoil of an'actually firing gun.
7. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a piston movably arranged'in said cylinder, said passing therethrough and ope at the forward end of said piston, a'spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to force said piston in the direction of firing, said cylinder having an air channel arranged therearound, a slide arranged in said cylinder in front of said piston,
said cylinder having an inlet therein controlled by said slide and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and the interior of the cylinder in front of said piston,
said cylinder having a port controlled by said piston and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and the compressed air channel passing through said piston, a valve controlling the admission of compressed air .to said air channel, and means cooperating with said valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, said compressed air causing the backward movement of said piston thereby producing a shock similar to the recoil of an actually 'firing gun.
8. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and otherlight guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in 'place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a piston movably arranged in saidcylinder, a spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to.force said piston in the direction of firing, a rod secured to and projecting forwardly.

and means co-operating'withs'aid valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, said compressed air' causing the backward movement of said piston-thereby producing a shock similar to' the recoil of an actually firing ing an air channel arranged therearound, aslide arranged in said cylinder in front of said piston, said cylinder having an inlet therein controlled by said slide and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and; the interior of the cylinder in'front' of said piston,
a bullet receptacle at the front part of the adapter, means establishing communicatio be-- tween the interior of the cylinder in front of said piston and said bullet receptacle, said cylinder having a port controlled by said piston and establishing communication between said airchanf nel around said-cylinder and the compressed air channel passing through said piston, a valve controlling the admission of compressed air to said air channel, and means co-operating with said ingtherethrough and partly, through said piston,
the admission of compressed air valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, said compressed air causing the backward movement of said piston thereby producing a shock similar to the recoil of an actually firing gun.
10. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising apylinder, a piston movably arranged in said cylinder, a spring 10 pressing against said piston and having the tendency to force said piston in the direction of firing,a rod secured to and projecting forwardly from said piston, said rod having a channel pass-- ing therethrough and partly through said-pis- 1 ton, a slide arranged on said rod, a spring inserted in said slide and braking the movements thereof, stops on said piston and said rod limiting the movement of said slide on said rod, said cylinder having an inlet for the admission of com- 20 pressed air into said'cylinder and controlled by said slide, said compressed air causing the backward movement of said piston thereby producing a shock similar to the recall of an actually firing gun.
11. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a piston provided with a reduced middle portion movably arranged insaid cylinder, said piston having a compressed air channel therein beginning at said reduced middle portion and ending at the forward end of said piston, a spring Dressing against said piston in the direction of firing,

An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a piston movably arranged in said cylinder, said piston having a compressed air'channel partly passing therethrough and open at the Iforward end of said piston, a spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to force said piston in the direction of firing, said cylinder having an air channel arranged therearound, a slide arranged in said cylinder in front of said piston, said cylinder having an inlet therein controlled by said slide and establishing, communication between said air channel around said cylinder and-the interior of the cylinder in front of said piston, said cylinder having a port therein controlled by said piston and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and the compressed air channel passing through said piston,a valve controlling the admission ofcompressed air to said channel, means co-operating with said valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, a block fixed to the gun, a bullet magazine in the shape ofa screw-wound tube attached with one of its 7 ends to said block, a duct controlled by said slide and terminating in said block, and a pipe in communication with said duct and connected to the other end of said screw-wound tube for the supply of compressed air.
17. An adapter for practicing firing by means of compressed air from machine guns and other light guns and adapted for insertion in the gun in place of the breech, comprising a cylinder, a piston movably arranged in said cylinder, said piston having a compressed air channel partly passing therethrough and open at the forward end of said piston, a spring pressing against said piston and having the tendency to. force said piston in the direction of firing, said cylinder having an air channel arranged therearound, a slide arranged in said cylinder in front of said piston, said cylinder having an inlet therein controlled by said slide and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and the interior of the cylinder in front of said piston, said cylinder having a port therein controlled by said piston and establishing communication between said air channel around said cylinder and the compressed air chamiel passing through said piston, a valve controlling the admission of compressed air to said channel, means co-operating with'said valve and said piston in order to operate said valve by said piston, a bullet magazine in the shape of a screw-wound tube attached to the gun and terminating in the gunbarrel, a screw cap closing the end of the bullet magazine which is remote from the barrel, and a duct controlled by said slide and establishing communication between the interior of said cylinder and said bullet magazine.
