This invention relates to padlocks and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will exclude rain to prevent the movable parts lwithin the lock body 'from rusting and becoming inoperative or to prevent the accumulation of water therein to freeze in cold Weather and interfere with the operation of the movable parts.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View illustrating a padlock constructed in accordance With my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a plan view illustrating a key for operating the padlock.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates the padlock outer shell or body, the same being of substantially rectangular longitudinal and transverse section, and having a chamber 2 opening through the bottom. The body l has a recess 4' disposed laterally of and communicating with the chamber 2 and located in the lower portion of the body. A passage 5 is formed in the body and extends from the top of the body to the recess 4 to receive a shackle 5.
The shackle 6 includes leg portions 'l and 8 and the leg portion 8 is of a greater length than the leg portion 'l and is received in the passage 5 and enters the recess 4' while the leg portion l may move into and out of a. notch or recess 9 formed in the top Wall of the body. The leg 1 oi" the shackle 6 when moved out of the recess 9 permits the shackle to be readily adapted to a keeper. The leg portion 8 of the shackle is free to slide in the passage 5 and also rotate. However, the leg portion 8 has a comparatively tight fit with the walls of the passage 5 to exclude moisture, rain or the like from the recess 4'.
A block or support l0 is mounted in the chamber 2 and has formed therein a key opening or passage Il, one end of which opens through the bottom of the support. The support is provided at the bottom with a flange 4 which ts snugly againstthe bottom edge of the shell or body I to prevent entry of water into the chamber 2, Yin the body. Rivets or other connectors I2 are passed through the body I and support In to rigidly secure the parts together. Formed on the support ID are guides I3 and I4 and which are arranged -at'right angles to each other. A locking bolt I5 is slidably supported by the guide I3 and the guide I4 slidably supports a member I6 which parallels the leg portion 8 of the shackle and is connected thereto by a link Il. The leg portion 3 of the shackle is acted upon by the spring I8 and the member I6 is acted upon by a spring I9. The springs I8 and Ill urge the leg portion 8 of the shackle 6 and the members I6 in the same direction. The spring acting on the leg portion B of the shackle disengages the leg portion 'l from the Arecess 9. A spring 20 acts on the locking bolt I5 to urge the same in a position to overlie the member I5 and to retain said member against movement under the influence of the spring I9. The member I6 being held in the position stated by the locking bolt holds the shackle 6 or the leg portion 8 from movement under the action of the spring I8 and with the leg portion 'I extending into the recess 9.
Formed in the support I0 is a chamber 2I in which is-pivotally mounted a series of superimposed tumblers 22 each having a slot 23 in one end and a key slot 24 partially surrounded by a shoulder 25. The slots 23 open outwardly to the ends of the tumblers and are provided with branches 26. A pin 21 is secured to the locking bolt and extends through the slots 23 and when the locking bolt overlies the member I6 the pin occupies the branches. 26 preventing the locking bolt from being retracted from engagement with the member I6, consequently securing the shackle 6 against being moved to a released or unlocked position. Leaf springs 28 act on the tumblers to position them so that the pin 21 enters the branches 26 of the slots 23. The locking bolt has a key opening 29 and located adjacent thereto is a shoulder 30. A key 3| is provided for actu ating the tumblers so asV to position said tumblers with the pin 21 lying in the slots and out of the branches. The key 3| also extends through the key opening 29 of the locking bolt wherebyY the same may be retracted against the action of the spring 30 by the rotation of the key. The key has projections or bits for the actuation of the tumblers and the sliding bolt by engaging the shoulders 25 and 30. Thus it will be seen that this padlock is simple to actuate by a key and when locked it will eiectively prevent the shackle from being moved into an open position. Further, it is to be noted that the construction of the body and the connection of the shackle thereto is such that water and moisture will be eX- cluded from the Working parts inside of the body either when the shackle is open or closed.
What is claimed is:
l. A padlock comprising a body having a chamber and a passage communicating With said chamber and opening outwardly through a face of the body, said body having a recess, a shackle including leg portions, With one of said leg portions entering the chamber by way of said passage and the other leg portion adapted to be moved into and out of the recess by sliding and rotating said shackle, a member slidable in the chamber, means connecting said member to the shackle, spring means acting on said shackle and member, a support in said chamber and having a key passage to receive a key, a locking bolt slidable in said chamber to engage said member for securing the shackle in a locked position and having a key opening, a spring acting on said locking bolt, and tumblers carried by said support and connected with the locking bolt.

A padlock comprising a body having a chamber and a passage communicating with said chamber and opening outwardly through a face of the body, said body having a recess, a shackle including leg portions, with one of said leg portions entering the chamber by Way of said passage and the other leg portion adapted to be moved into and out of the recess by sliding and rotating said shackle, a member slidable in the chamber, means connecting said member to the shackle, spring means acting on said shackle and member, a support in said chamber and having a key passage to receive a key, a locking bolt slidable in said chamber to engage said member for securing the shackle in a locked position and having a key opening, a spring acting on said locking bolt, tumblers pivotally mounted on said support and having slots provided with branches, a pin secured to the locking bolt and extending into said slots, springs acting on said tumblers to position the latter to receive the pins in the branches of said slots, said tumblers having key openings to receive the key whereby the tumblers may be actuated by said key and the bolt slid by the rotation of the key with the pin moving in the slots of the tumblers to free the member connected to the shackle and permit said shackle to move into unlocked position.
