The instant invention relates to a printing and resetting mechanism of a totalizer. It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and positive differentiation between the sub-total and total impressions and to assure the correct operation' of the machine by corresponding locking stamping mark on the voucher upon the impression ofthe sub-total.
The instant invention consists in attaining the positive differentiation between the sub-total impression and the impression of the end-total by providing an arrangement whereby at the setting of the machine for an end-total, the printing voucher is moved to a different printing line from that which is used when'the machine is set for the printing of an interm d te total. The invention particularly concerns a machine without an automatic zero-setting device, in which 26 the zero-setting means for the totalizer must first be rendered free by the unlocking of a lock. In accordance with the invention, the unlocking of the lock at the same time causes a shifting of the printingvoucher so that another printing line of the voucher arrives in the line of the printing type and the impression of that special type is controlled, which designates the end-total.
At the same time, a locking arrangement is actuated thereby, which enforces the execution of the zero-setting of the totalizer and the resetting of the lock to its normal position before a new adding machine operation may be performed.
Other inventive features are embodied injthe special constructive arrangement of the invention, one embodiment of which is described hereinafter and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein, I

In Figs. 1 and 2, a settingmeans in the form of a lock 2 is screwed into the side wall I of the machine. The lock nut l of. the lock is connected with a disc I upon which is mounted a pin I; The pin 5 extends through a recess of an arm 6 and into a curved groove I of a lever 8 which is pivotally mounted upon a bolt 8. At the right end of lever 8 (Fig. 3) isa series of locking teeth In which cooperate with a locking pawl l2, rotatably mounted upon a bolt ll, under the action of a spring I i. The lower end of the voucher support 2i rests upon a yoke 25 which'is likewise fixed upon the front wall of the machine housing. The voucher is insertable in the support so that its lower end shown in Fig. 5 is at the top of the support.
Two swinging plates 32 are mounted upon av shaft 3| extending between the side walls of the machine, one of which plates is illustrated in Fig. 3. The totalizer shaft 33 is mounted in these swinging plates, upon which the totalizer wheels formed as type wheels 34, are rotatably mounted. Also upon the shafts 3| and 35, are mounted the tens transfer devices and the tens transfer driving mechanism, The-totalizer, consisting of'the adding wheels 34, may be rocked in a clockwise direction (Fig. 3), in dependency upon asetting lever, not shown, by means of the rod it so that the adding wheels come into engagement with a driving gear, not shown.
Figure 4 shows the coloring band frame 4| in top and front elevation. This frame is maintained in the lower portion of the voucher support 2| by means of spring clips 42, so that the coloring band 43 lies directly in front of the type wheels 34. The coloring band 43 is fixed upon the frame 4| by means of pins or by means of clamping pieces. The frame 4| also carries a projection 44 which is so shaped that it uncovers that one of the types upon a special type bearer 45 (Fig. 1), which is to designate the sub-total or end-total on the printing voucher, uncovering only one of these types and covering the other one in every position of the voucher support 2|.
In order to enforce a rotation of the totalizer shaft as at the unlocking of the lock 2 for the purpose of zeroizing the totalizer before a new adding machine operation may be performed, the following blocking mechanisms are provided:
The arm 6 (Fig. 3) has a curved groove 46 in which the pin 41 engages. The upper end of the arm 6 is jointedly connected with a lever arm 48 by means of a pin member 5|, and the arm 48 is pivotally mounted upon a shaft 49. The pin 5| extends to the plane of a blocking segment 52, which is pivotally mounted upon a bolt 53 and which is capable of rotation in a clockwise direction by the pull of spring 54. The blocking segment 52 has a recess 55 in which the pin 5| may pass, and a blocking shoulder 56 at the end of this recess, which can cooperate with the pin member 5| in the manner described hereinafter. Furthermore, the blocking segment 52 carries a rectangular lug 51, which cooperates with a blocking shoulder 58 upon a holding pawl 6| rotatably mounted upon a bolt 59. The holding pawl 6| is rocked in a clockwise direction by means of the pull of spring 62.

which is connected with a sleeve 64 keyed upon the zero-settting'shaft 33. 'The disc 63 carries a lug 61 which cooperates with the left end 68 of the blocking segment 52. The three counting wheels 65 form a counter counting the adding operations exceeding the capacity of the totalizer.
The counting wheels 65 of the tens and of the hundreds orders are connected by means of transfer pinions 66, rotatably mounted upon a shaft 18. The tens transfer pinion 66 of the counting wheel 65 of the lowest order and of the adding wheel 34 of the highest order are connected in any way known in the art. The counting wheels are mounted upon the same shaft 33 as the adding wheels 34 and therefore, are rocked in -a clockwise direction upon the swinging of the plates 32.
The zeroizing of the adding wheels is effected in the following manner well known in the art: a
The shaft 33 is provided with a longitudinal notch 8|. Each of the-adding wheels 34 carries a pivoted pawl 82 which is spring pressed against the shaft 33. The end of shaft 33 is accessible through an opening 33a in the wall I of the casing and is provided with teeth 33b to be engaged by a key for turning the shaft. When the shaft 33 is turned the notch 3| will contact with the ends of the pawls 32 and pick up the adding wheels and carry them around with it through "9 to 0" so that after a complete revolution of the shaft the adding wheels will be set to zero position.
A disc 12 is fixed upon the main drive shaft 1| The holding (Fig. 2), which has a recess 13. When the lock 2 for the taking of an end-total is unlocked, the nose 14 of a locking lever 15 engages in this recess 13. The locking lever 15 is pivotally mounted upon a bolt 16 and carries the pin 41 which engages in the curved groove 46 of the arm 6. In its outer position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 the lever 15 covers opening 33a and prevents access to the zeroizing shaft 33.
The printing platen 82 is so mounted upon the front wall of the machine by means of a spring plate 8|, that the platen head 83' extends through an opening 84 through the front wall, and the printing platen 82 may be pressed manually against the type wheels 34. The described apparatus operates in the following manner:
The locking nut 3 of the lock 2 is unlocked by rotating it 180 in a clockwise direction, whereby the arm 6, by means of the pin 5, is moved into. its downward position, shown in Fig. 3. The curved groove 46 in the arm 6 causes the locking lever 15 to be rocked in a clockwise direction so that the latter uncovers opening 33a which provides access to the zero-setting shaft 33, while its locking nose 14 engages in the locking disc 12 and thereby locks the main drive shaft 1|, so long as the lock is maintained in its open or unlocked position. Simultaneously with the unlocking of the lock 2, the pin 5 causes the lever 8 to be rotated about its bolt 9, thereby moving the voucher frame 2| into its upper position shown in Fig.3 through the parts |5, l1 and 9. Thereby, instead of the lower printing line, as shown in Fig. 5, being in alignment with the line of type, the upper line is in front of the type. The coloring band carrier 4| has also been moved so that the covering projection 44 covers the type for the sub-total and uncovers the typefor the end-total upon the type carrier 45 in Fig. 1.
Upon the lowering of the arm 6, the pin member 5| is moved out from the recess in the blocking segment 52. Since, at this time, the rectangular lug 51 does not lie in front of the shoulder 58, as explained hereinafter, the blocking segment 52 may rotate in a clockwise direction under the force of spring 54, whereby the blocking shoulder 56 comes to lie over the pin 5|, thereby immediately preventing a return rotation of the lock 2 to its normal position, since the arm 6 can no longer move upwardly.
By manually pressing upon the resiliently mounted printing platen 82, the impression is now taken from the type wheels 34 and see the top line of Fig. 5. Thereupon, by the manipulation of a key, the zero-setting shaft 33 is rotated and thereby, the adding wheels" 34 are returned to their zero-setting in the manner previously described. During this zero-setting rotation, the lug 61 of the disc 63 strikes the left end 63 of the blocking segment 52 and rocks it in a counterclockwise direction so far that the rectangular lug 51 comes to abut under the blocking shoulder 53. Since now the blocking shoulder 56 has rendered free the pin member 5| the lock 2 may be rotatedback 180 to its normal position, whereby the locking nose 14 ofthe locking lever 15 is raised from the recess 13 of the locking disc 12, thereby freeing the main drive shaft 1|. During the first following addition machine operation, the totalizer is rocked about shaft 3| in a clockwise direction into engagement with the machine drive, not shown. In the course of this rocking movement, the disc 53 strikes against the left end of the holding pawl n (Fig. 3) and 11m this pawl so imam the rectangular lug I1 can slide from under the shoulder 58 so that the blocking segment I! may execute a slight movement to the left in a clockwise direction corresponding to the difierence between the diameter of the pin member ii and the width. of the recess Bl. The interlock ll, 58 is therefore, eliminated after the first addition machine operation. The interlock I, I! on the other hand, is not affected because at this time.

By means of the described apparatus, at the setting of the machine for the aeroizing of the totalizer, the record sheet or voucher is compulsorily moved to bring opposite the type line a special area which is different from the area on which sub-totals are printed. Furthermore, a compulsory series of operations are enforced at the time of a aero-setting'operation and the lock must be moved back to its normal position before a new machine operation of addition may be executed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
1. In a machine of the class described, a totalizer, printing type carried by said totalizer, a zero-setting device for said totalizer, a driving mechanism for the machine, locking means for alternatively preventing operation of said zerosetting device or said driving mechanism, setting means for shifting said locking means, a support for a record sheet opposite said type, means controlled by said. setting means for shifting said support relative tosaid type, blocking means to hold said locking-means engaged with said driving mechanism,- and means whereby the resetting of said totalizer releases said blocking means.
2. A machine as described in claim 1 wherein said locking'means, said support shifting means, and one member of said blocking means are all connected to onepivoted lever operated by said setting means, and a full stroke mechanism cooperating with said lever.
3. The combination claimed in claim 1 wherein said blocking means comprises a pivotedblocking segment having a slot therein and a blocking shoulder at the end of said slot, a member connected with said locking means normally within said slot adapted to be withdrawn therefrom upon the withdrawal of said locking means from said zero-setting device, spring means tending to move said blocking segment to place said shoulder in front of said member, and means operated upon the resetting of said totalizer to zero for swinging said blocking segment to release said member from said shoulder.
4. In amachine of the class described, a
ing means. to hold said locking means engaged with said driving mechanism, means whereby said blocking means is moved to-blocking position as said setting means is adjusted to liberate said zero-setting device, means whereby the resetting of said totalizer renders said blocking means inoperative, and means whereby said blocking means is set to a preparatory position by the following machine operation ready to be set in efiective position as said setting means is adjusted to liberate said zero-setting device.
5. The combination .claimed in claim 4wherein said blocking mechanism comprises a pivoted blocking segment having a slot therein and a blocking shoulder at the end of said slot, a member connected with said locking means normally Within said slot adapted to be withdrawn therefrom upon the movement of saidv locking means to engage said driving mechanism, spring means tending to swing said blocking segment, a lug on said blocking segment, and a pivoted holding pawl adjacent said blocking segment engageable with said lugs to hold said blocking segment against the action of said spring.

The combination claimed in claim 4 wherein said blocking mechanism comprises a pivoted blocking segment having a slot therein and a blocking shoulder at the end of said slot, a member connected with said locking means normally within said slot adapted to be withdrawn therefrom upon the movement of said locking means to engage said driving mechanism, spring means tend-' blocking segment having a slot therein and a blocking shoulder at the end of said slot, a member connected with said locking means normally within said slot adapted to be withdrawn therefrom upon the movement of said locking means to engage said driving mechanism, spring means tending to swing said blocking segment, a lug on said blocking segment, a pivoted holding pawl adjacent said locking segment engageable with said lug to hold said blocking segment against the action of said spring, means movable with said totalizer during an adding operation for releasing said pawl, said'blocking segment being thereafter movable by said spring when said setting means is moved to liberate said zerosetting device, to place said blocking shoulder in front of said member, said blocking segment being movable to free said member from said shoulder when said totalizer is reset to zero.
8; The combination claimed in claim 4 wherein said blocking mechanism comprises a pivoted blocking segment having a slot therein and a blocking shoulder at the end of said slot, a. member connected with said locking means normally within said slot adapted to be withdrawn therefrom upon the movement of said locking means to engage said driving mechanism, spring means tending to swing said blocking segment, a lug on said blocking segment, a. pivoted holding pawl adjacent said locking segment engageable with said lug to hold said blocking segment against the actionof said spring, means movable with said totalizer during an adding operation for releasing said pawl, said blocking segment being thereafter movable by said spring when said setting means is moved to liberate said zero-setting device, to place said blocking shoulder in front of said driving mechanism, setting means for shifting said locking means, a support for a record sheet opposite said type, means controlled by said setting means for shifting said support relative to said type, blocking means to hold said locking means engaged with said driving mechanism, means whereby said blocking means is moved to blocking position as said setting means is adjusted to liberate said zero-setting device,
means whereby the resetting of said totalizer renders said blocking means inoperative, and means moved by swinging of said rocking frame to release said blocking means to a preparatory position ready to be set in effective position as said setting means is adjusted to liberate said zero-setting device.
10. In a printing mechanism for a cash register or bookkeeping machine containing a totalizer and resetting means therefor, means for controlling the resetting of said totalizer by said resetting means, printing type positioned by said totalizer, a support for a record sheet opposite said type, means governed by said controlling means for relatively shifting said support and said type to bring opposite said type for printing end totals a special area of said record sheet which is diiferent from the area on which subtotals are printed, means acting automatically to block said support in shifted position, and means operated by the setting of the totalizer to zero for releasing said blocking means.

In a printing-mechanism for a cash register or bookkeeping machine containing a totalizer, means for resetting said totalizer, control means for preventing operation of said resetting means, printing type positioned by said totalizer, a support for a record sheet opposite said type, means governed by said control means for relatively shifting said support and said type to bring opposite said type for printing end-totals a special area of said record sheet which is diil'erent from the area on which sub-totals are printed, means acting automatically to block said support in shifted position, and means operated by the setting of the totalizer to zero for releasing said blocking means.
12. In a machine of the class described, a

printing type positioned by said totalizer, a support for a record sheet opposite said typexshiftable between two positions, a control means having two positions respectively for preventing operation of said resetting means and for preventing adding operations of the machine, connections whereby adjustment of said control means moves said voucher support from one oi. its positions to the other, means acting automatically to block said support in the position corresponding to the position of said control means preventing adding operations, and means operated by the setting of the totalizer to zero for releasing said blocking means.
.13.- In a printing mechanism for a cash register or bookkeeping machine containing a. totalizer, a zero-setting device for said totalizer,
means for preventing operation of said device, setting means for moving said last-mentioned means to liberate said zero-setting device for a zero-setting operation, printing type positioned by said totalizer, a support for a record sheet opposite said type, means controlled by said setting means for shifting said support relative to said type to bring opposite said type for printing end-totals a special area of said record sheet which is difierent from the area on which sub-. totals are printed, means acting automatically to block said support in shifted position, and means operated by the setting of the totalizer to zero'for releasing said blocking means.

In a machine of the class described, a totalizer, printing type positioned by said totalizer, a support for a record sheet opposite said type shiftable between two positions, a zero-setting device for said totalizer, a cover plate for rendering said zero-setting'device inaccessible, setting means for removing said cover plate, positive connections between said setting means and said voucher support whereby the latter is moved from one position to the other in accordance with the position of said setting means, means for blocking said support in the position corresponding to the removed position of said cover plate, and means operated by the setting of the totalizer to zero for releasing said blocking means.

In a printing mechanism for a cash register or bookkeeping machine containing a totalizer, number type positioned by said totalizer, a plurality of auxiliary typev alined with said number typ a support for a record sheet' opposite said type mounted to shift, for changing the area of the record sheet upon which the type print, and means shiftable simultaneously with said support for selectively rendering ineflective said auxiliary type.

In a printing mechanism for a cash register or bookkeeping machine containing a totalizer, number type positioned by said totalizer, a plurality of auxiliary type alined with said number type, a support for a' record sheet opposite said type mounted to shift, for changing the area of the record sheet upon which the type print, and a cover plate mounted on said support and shaped to cover diilerentones of said auxiliary type in the different positions of saidsup- 17. In a printing mechanism for a cash registen or bookkeeping-machineoontainingi-a totalizer, number type positioned by said totalizer, a plurality of auxiliary type alined with said number type, a support for a record sheet opposite said type mounted to shiIt,-1or changing the area of the record sheet upon which the type print, a coloring band, a mounting frame for said band, means for detachably connecting said frame to said support, and a cover plate on said frame shaped to cover diiIerent ones of said auxiliary type in the diflerent positions oi said support.
