This invention relates to an improvement in Chaser-holders for self-opening and other types of di-heads, and especially holders for threadcutting die-heads.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide superior means for holding chasers in a die-head in such a manner that the chasers may be conveniently adjusted for cutting different diameters and securely retained in given positions of adjustment.
A further object is to provide superior chaserholding means in which the chasers may be adjusted in definitely predetermined steps.
With the above and. other objects in View, as Will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the present invention includes all features herein disclosed which are novel over the prior art.

For the purpose of illustrating the present in- Vention, there is shown in the accompanying drawings a self-opening die-head having the forward face of its body-member 2li provided with four more or less) T-shaped guide-grooves 2l, each of which is adapted to receive and guide the similarly-shaped guide-tang 22 of a reciprocating holder-body 23.
Inasmuch as each of the four holder-bodies 23 correspond to each other, a description of one thereof, together with its coacting parts, will serve for all.
The outer end of the guide-tang 22 is formed with an inclined cam-surface 24 which is adapted to be engaged by a similarly-inclined internal cam-surface 25 formed within the forward. end of a ring-like operating-sleeve 26. erating-sleeve encircles the body-member 2U of the die-head and is adapted to slide axially upon the same so as to act when movedforward to force the various holder-bodies 23 inwardly and to maintain the same in such position. When the said Chaser-operating sleeve 2t is moved rearwardly, each of the holder-bodies 23 and the parts carried thereby will be permitted to move radially outward into their retired positions. Each holder-body 23 is urged outwardly by a pair of cup-shaped plungers .2l-21 (see Fig. l), each of which is adapted to reciprocate in a suitable radial-bore '2B formed in the body-member 20 of the die-head directly back of the guidegroove 2l in the latter. Each plunger 2'! is urged outwardly by a helical-spring 29 and engages with a thrust-pin 30, two of which latter project rearwardly from each of the holderbodies 23.
The detailed character of the various die-heads in which the present chaser-holders may be mounted does not require detailed description beyond that already given other than to say that in the die-head shown the operating-sleeve 25 may be axially adjusted upon the body-member 2|] to efect the slight advancement or retirement of the holder-bodies 23, by means of an adjusting-nut 3! mounted upon the threaded portion 32 of the shank 33 of the die-head structure.
The rear-face 3ft of the holder-body 23 is carefully ground to provide a bearing-surface which is adapted to ride upon the front face of the body-member 2li of the die-head, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. In addition to being provided with the rearwardly-extending guide-tang 22, each holder-body 23 is formed with a substantially-rectangular forwardly-extending Chaser-carrying post 35Vhaving a slightly-angular disposition with respect to the said guidetang as indicated at A in Fig. 5. The said guidepost 35 is formed in one of its sides with a guidegroove 36, and in its opposite side with a similar guide-groove 3l. The edge of the end-wall 33 of the groove 36 is formed with a series of tran..- versely-extending Chaser-locating teeth 39. The said teeth 39 are preferably shaped like ratchetteeth and have their holding-faces facing inwardly toward the center of the die-head. The said teeth 39 are adapted to be engaged by a similarly-spaced series formed upon the adjacent face of a wedge-shaped Chaser-backing member M along the outer edge thereof (Fig. 9). The said Chaser-backing member is formed with a guide-rib Ma which ts into the guide-groove 36 in the Chaser-carrying post 35.

Adjacent to its inner edge the Chaser-backing member 4| is provided with a stop-ange 45 against which bears the inner sideedge of the Chaser 43.
in order to irmly hold the Chaser 43 in place upon the seat 42 of the Chaser-backing member 4i and in engagement with the stop-nger 45 and stop-flange 45 thereof, the said Chaser is formed with a transverse-bore 4'! having a conical portion 48 at each of its respective' opposite ends where it. intersects the respective opposite faces of the chaser. Extending through the bore 4l' in the Chaser 43 is an inclined Clampingscrew 49 having a spherically-contoured head 55 seated in the outermost conical portion 48 of said bore, and having a polygonal-socket in its outer face for the reception of a suitable Wrench.
The clamping-bolt 49 also extends through a Clearance-bore 52 in the Chaser-backing member 4| and through a clearance-slot 53 in the Chaser-carrying post 35 and thence into a threaded-bore 54 in a substantially-rectangular Clamping-nut 55. The clamping-nut 55 is provided on its inner face with a guide-rib 55atting into the guide-groove 3l of the Chaser-Carrying post 35, and is adjusted longitudinally of the said groove for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. In the portion of its inner face mest remote from the die-head body 25, the clamping-nut is formed with a series of locatingteeth 55 which are preferably of ratchet-tooth form like the locating-teeth 39 previously renerred to but having their holding-faces facing away from the center of the die-head. The lo-v eating-teeth 55 of the clamping-nut 55 just re ferred to engage with a similarly-shaped series of keating-teeth 5'! formed upon the edge of the endwall 5S of the guide-groove 3l' to prevent the Inward displacement of the said clamping-nut 55.
It will be noted that the Chaser-backing member 4l is of wedge-shaped form both in longi- 'ufiinal and transverse section so that the chaserseating face 42 of the said member has a ccmpound slope with respect to its opposite face on which latter is located its guiderib 55a and its locating-teeth 57. That is to say, the chaserbacking member 4| has its edge which is most remote from the front face of the die-head thinner than its edge which is near-est to the front face of the die-head, as will be Clearly apparent by reference to Figs. 1 and 4 in particular.
The slope of the Chaser-seating face 42 of the Chaser-backing member 4|, just above referred to, serves to incline the thread-cutting teeth 44 of the Chaser 43 at substantially the proper helix angle of the thread to be cut upon the work.
The said Chaser-backing member also has its edge which is most remote from the axis of the A die-head thinner than its opposite edge whi-ch is nearest to the said axis so that the Chaser-seating face 42 also slopes in a direction as indicated by the breken extension lines B in Fig. 5. This tapering (B) of the Chaser-backing member 4l in combination with the angular disposition (A) of the post 35 is designed to cause the advance edges of the thread-cutting teeth 44 of the chaser 43 to be less in advance of the center of the work when the said member is moved inwardly to Correspcndingly shift the chaser 43 for cutting smaller diameters of Work as will be seen by comparing the showings of Figs. 5 and 6.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. 7 in particular that the clamping-bolt 49 is inclined so that when tightened it tends to force the edge of the Chaser 43 which is most remote from the axis of the die-head, against the stop-finger 45 of the Chaser-backing member 4|, as Well as serving to force the same into Contact with the Chaser-carrying post 35. Under these conditions the Chaser-backing member 4I is also urged outwardly away from the axis of the die-head but this movement is prevented, of course, by the engagement of its locating-teeth 45 with the locating-teeth 35 of the post 35. At the same time that the clamping-bolt 45 is tending to force the Chaser 43 and Chaser-backing member 4| in the directions just referred to, it also tends, owing to the inclination referred to, to force the clampingnut 55 inwardly toward the axis of the die-head structure as well as into intimate Contact with the adjacent face of the post 35. The said clamping-nut 55 is prevented, however, from moving inwardly toward the center of the 'diehead structure by the engagement of its locating-teeth 55 with the locating-teeth 57 on the said post 35.
In addition to the inclination above described, the clamping-bolt 4S is also inclined so that its threaded end is closer to the front face of the die-head structure than is its head 5B, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 4 in particular. lThat is to say, when viewed from the direction indicated in Fig. 4, the clamping-bolt extends in the direction of a right angle to the inclined chaserseat 42 of the Chaser-backing member 4|.
When it is desired to shift the Chaser 43 inv Wardly toward the center of the die-head to cut threads upon work of lesser diameters than that indicated in Fig. 5, the inclined clamping-bolt 49 is loosened to a degree sucient to permit both the Chaser-backing member 4| and the Clampingnut 55 to be concurrently shifted inwardly the desired number of locating-teeth. During this operation the Clamping-bolt is permitted to move with the parts 4| and 55 relative to the chasercarrying post 35 owing to the provision Cf the latter with the clearance-slot 53. After the members 4| and 55 have been moved to bring the thread-cutting teeth 44 of the Chaser 43 to a position nearest to the desired cutting position, the clamping-bolt 49 is tightened with the effect of rmly seating the Chaser 43 against the Chaserbacking member 4| and concurrently clamping the Chaser-backing member 4| and clamping-nut 55 against the opposite sides of the Chaser-Carrying post 35.
The clamping of the parts as just above described causes the locating-teeth of both the Chaser-backing member 4| and of the clampingnut 55 to engage with appropriate adjacent locating-teeth on the said Chaser-carrying post 35. If any minute adjustment ofthe Chaser 43 is required over and above that provided by the locating-teeth on the parts 35, 4| and 55, the entire Chaser-holder body 23 may be appropriately adjusted in a manner usual in die-heads by just suitably turning the adjusting-nut 3| of the die-head structure.
Various Chaser-backing members 4| may be provided to substitute one for the other when it is desired to shift to other chasers requiring a greatly different helix angle.
The invention may be carried out in other spe- Cic ways than those herein set forth without 'departing from the spirtand essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-headA and having Chaser-locating means thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing membergadjustably mounted upon the said holderbody with capacity forr bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said Chaser-locating means of the said holder-body; and clampingmeans serving to clamp the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and to maintain the chaser-locating means of kthe said Chaser-backing member in interlocking .engagement with the similar means of the said holderbody.
2. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a series of locatingteeth thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holderbody with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to Vthe holder-body and having a series of locatingteeth engageable with the said Chaser-locating teeth of the said holder-body; and clampingmeans serving to clamp the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and to maintain the locating-teeth of the said chaserbacking member in interlocking engagement with the locating-teeth of the said'holder-bcdy.
3. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having chaser-locating means thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holderbody with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the 'holder-body and having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said Chaser-locating means of the said holder-body; and clampingmeans constructed and arranged to simultaneously clamp a chaser against the said Chaser-backing memberl and the vlatter against the said holderbody and to clamp the Chaser-locating means of the Chaser-backing member into interlocking engagement with the similar means of the said `holder-body.
4. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a :die-head and having a series of locatingteeth thereon; a slide-like chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holderbody with capacity for bodily rectilinearniovement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a series of locatingteeth engageable with the said Chaser-locating v'teeth of the said holder-body; and clampinged inl a die-head and having Chaser-locating means thereon; a slide-like chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holder-body with capacity` for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a passage therethrough and also having Chaser-locating means engageable with thev said Chaser-locating means of the said holder-body; and clamping-means, including a clamping-bolt extending through the passage in the said slide-like Chaser-backing member and serving to clamp the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and to maintain the Chaser-locating means of the said chaserbacking memberl in interlocking engagement with the similar means of the said holder-body.
6. A Chaser-holder including' in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a series of locatingteeth thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holderbody with capacity for bodily rectilinear movenient toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a passage therethrough and also having a series of locatingteeth engageable with the said Chaser-locating teeth of the said holder-body; and clampingmeans, including a clamping-bolt extending through the passage in the said Chaser-backing member and serving to clamp the said chaserbacking member against the said holder-body and. to maintain the locating-teeth of the said ymeans thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing memf ber adjustably mounted upon the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-bodyy and having a passage therethrough and also having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said Chaser-locating means. of the said holder-body; and clamping-means, including a clamping-bolt extending through the passage vin the said slide-like Chaser-backing member and constructed and arranged to simultaneously clamp a chaser against the said Chaser-backing member and the latter against the said holderbody and to clamp the Chaser-locating means of the Chaser-backing member into interlocking engagement with the similar means of the said holder-body.
8. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted .in a die-head and having a series of locating-teeth thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backingk member adjustably mounted upon the `said holder-body with c-apacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a passage therethrough and also having a series of locating-teeth engageable with the said chaser-locating teeth of the said holder-body; and clampingmeans, including a clamping-bolt exten-ding through the passage in the said slide-like chaserbacking member and constructed and arranged to simultaneously clamp a chaser against the said chaser-backing member and the latter against the said holder-body and to clamp the locating-teeth of the vchaser-backing member into interlocking engagement with `the locatingteeth of the said holder-body.
9. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having chaserlocating means thereon; a slide-like chaserbacking member adjustably mounted upon the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said Chaser-locating means of the said holder-body; and a clamping-bolt extending through the clearance passages in the said holder-body and in the n said Chaser-backing member and serving to clampl the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and to maintain the chaserlocating means of the said Chaser-backing member in interlocking engagement with the similar means of the said holder-body.
10. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having a series of locating-teeth thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a clearance Ipassage therethrough and also having a series of locating-teeth engageable with the said Chaser-locating teeth of the said holder-body; and a clamping-bolt extending through the clearance passages in the said holder-body and in the said Chaser-backing member and serving to clamp the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and to maintain the locating-teeth of the said Chaser-backing member in interlocking engagement with the locating-teeth of the said holder-body.

A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having Chaser-locating means thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon one face of the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the Work relative to the holder-body and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said Chaser-locating means of the said holder-body; a clamping-nut mounted upon the face of the holder-body opposite the said Chaser-backing member; and a clamping-bolt extending through the clearance passages in the said holder-body and in the said slide-like Chaser-backing member and into engagement with the said clamping-nut.

A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body designed and adapted to be mounted in a die-head and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having a series of locating-teeth thereon; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon one face of the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having a series of locating-teeth engageable with the said chaser-locating teeth of the said holderbody; a clamping-nut mounted upon the face of the holder-body opposite the said chaserbacking member; and a clamping-bolt extending through the clearance passages in the said holder-body and in the said slide-like chaserbacking member and into engagement with the said clamping-nut.

The combination with a Chaser having a bolt-passage therethrough; of a Chaser-holder including: a holder-body having opposite faces each provided with locating-means and also having a clearance passage intersecting each of its said opposite faces; a slide-like Chaser-backing member adjustably mounted upon one face of the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the Work relative to the holder-body and having a clearance passage therethrough and also having locating-means engageable with the said chaserlocating means on the adjacent face of the said holder-body; a slide-like clamping-nut engaged with the face of the Chaser holder-body opposite the face upon which the said Chaser-backing member is mounted with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work and having locating-means engageable with the locating-means on the adjacent face of the said holder-body; and a clamping-bolt -extending through the Chaser and through the clearance passages in the said slide-like Chaser-backing member and in the said holder-body and engaged with the said slide-like clamping-nut.
14. The combination with a Chaser having a bolt-passage therethrough; of a Chaser-holder including; a holder-body having opposite faces each provided with a series of locating-teeth and also having a clearance passage intersecting each of its. said opposite faces; a slide-like chaserbacking member adjustably mounted upon one face of the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to' the holder-body and having a clearance passage therethrough and also h-aving a series of locating-teeth engageable with the said Chaser-locating teeth on the adjacent face of the said holder-body; a slide-like clamping-nut engaged with the face of the chaser holder body opposite the face upon which the said Chaser-backing member is mounted and having a series of locating-teeth engageable with the similar teeth on the adjacent face of the said holder-body; and a clamping-bolt extending through the chaser and through the clear-ance passages in the said slide-likev Chaser-backing member and in the said holder-body and engaged with the said slide-like clamping-nut.
15. A Chaser-holder including in combination: a holder-body having a mounting-tang for engagement with a die-head and also having a mounting-post inclined with respect to its said tang .and provided with Chaser-locating means; a slide-like chaser-ba'cking member adjustably mounted upon the mounting-post of the said holder-body with capacity for bodily rectilinear movement toward and away from the work relative to the holder-body and having Chaser-locating means engageable with the said chaserlocating means of the mounting-post of the said holder-body; and clamping-means constructed and arranged to clamp the said Chaser-backing member against the said holder-body and toy maintain the Chaser-locating means of the said Chaser-backing member in interlocking engagement with the similar means of the mountingpost of the said holder-body.
