The chain, in this form of the invention, comprises a series of end-abutting bit blocks 30 pivotally connected by pivot pins 3| to strap links 32. I
The bit block body is traversed by a bit socket 33 terminating at its inner end with an enlarged opening 34 traversing the bit block. The ends of the bit block are provided with inclined abutment surfaces 35 which are adapted abuttingly to en'- gage correspondingly shaped surfaces on the next adjacent bit blocks. The bit is held within the bit block socket by a setscrew 36 in the same manner as in the form of the invention above described; and otherwise this form of the invention is the same.
As a result of this invention, it will be noted that an improved cutter chain is provided, having improved cutter bit and bit-holding means whereby the bit is held within its bit block in an improved manner. It will further be noted that an improved cutter bit of the double-ended type is provided, having improved means for positioning the bit with respect to the bit block socket and for securing the bit within the bit block socket. It will also be evident that by providing the cutting portions of the bit with the particular shape of cutting face and cutting points disclosed, an improved cutting action is attained, while the wearing qualities of the bit are greatly increased. These and other uses and advantages of the improved cutter chain will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While in this application there are described two forms which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be further modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A double-ended, reversible cutter bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a parallelogram, and rectangular in cross section, the cutting portions at the opposite ends of the bit body providing cutting points at the opposite sides of the bit, and means formed on the opposite sides of the bit body viewed in side elevation, providing abutments respectively engageable with an outer surface of a bit block for limiting inward movement of the bit within a bit block socket and with means for holding the bit within a bit block socket.
2. A double-ended, reversible cutter bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a parallelogram, and rectangular in cross section, the cutting portions at the opposite ends of the bit body providing cutting points at the opposite sides of the bit, and means formed on the opposite side surfaces of the bit body viewed in side elevation, providing abutments respectively engageable with an outer surface ofa bit block for limiting inward movement of the bit.within a bit block socket and with means for holding the bit within a bit block socket, said latter abutment means preventing release of the bit from a bit block socket even when the bit holding means is slightly released.
3. In a cutter chain, a bit block having a bit receiving socket, and a double-ended, reversible cutter bit of narrow elongated form receivable in said bit block socket, said bit having cutting portions at its opposite ends terminating in cutting points and also having sides lying in parallel planes passing through said cutting points respectively, and means on the body of said bit between said cutting portions and engageable with the outer surface of the bit block for limiting inward movement of the bit within the bit block socket, said' limiting means being arranged on the bit body outside of the parallel planes including said sides of the bit and the cutting points of said cutting portions. v
4. In a cutter chain, a bit block having a bit receiving socket, and a double-ended, reversible cutter bit of narrow elongated form receivable in said bit block socket, said bit having cutting portions at its opposite ends terminating in cutting points and also having sides lying in parallel planes passing through said cutting points respectively, and means on the body of said bit between said cutting portions and respectively engageable with the outer surface of the bit block for limiting inward movement of the bit within the bit block socket and with holding means for preventing release of the bit from the bit block socket even when the holding means is slightly released, said limiting means being arranged on the bit body outside of said parallel planes including said sides of the bit and the cutting points of said cutting portions.
5. A cutter chain comprising a bit block having a bit-receiving socket, a double-ended, reversible cutter bit insertable in said socket, said bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a parallelogram, and of rectangular cross section, means on said bit block engageable with one such side surface of the bit body for clamping the opposed side surface to one wall of the bit block socket, and means on the bit body engageable with the outer surface of the bit block lar cross section, means on said bit block engageable with one such side surface of the bit body for clamping its opposed side surface to one wall of the bit block socket, means on the bit bodyengageable with said clamping means for preventing inadvertent release of the bit from its socket even when said clamping means is slightly released, and means on said bit body engageable with an outer surface of the bit block for limiting movement of the bit upon insertion thereof within the bit block socket.
7. A cutter bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a parallelogram, and of rectangular cross section, the cutting portions at its opposite ends providing cutting points at the opposite sides of the bit body and having plane cutting faces inclined with respect to the parallel side surfaces of the bit body, and means formed on said parallel sides of the bit body providing abutments respectively for limiting inward movement of the bit within a socket of a bit block and engaging means for holding the bit within a bit block socket.
8. A cutter chain comprising a. bit block hav-' ing a bit-receiving socket, a double-ended, reversible cutter bit insertable in said bit block socket, said bit having a body of narrow elongated form terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided with abutment means spaced longitudinally of the bit body, one abutment means adjacent each cutting portion of the bit, said bit being reversible end for end within said bit block socket, and said abutment means which are respectively the nearer to the thenactive cutting portions selectively engaging an outer surface on the bit block for limiting insertive movement of the bit within when said bit is in either of its end for end positions within said socket.
9. A cutter chain comprising a bit block having a bit-receiving socket, a double-ended, reversible cutter bit insertable in said bit block socket, said bit having a body of narrow elongated form terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided with abutment means spaced longitudinally of the bit body, one abutment means adjacent each cutting portion of the bit, said bit said bit block socket being reversible end for end within said bit block socket, and said abutment means which are respectively the nearer to the themactivecutting portions selectively engaging an outer surface on the bit block for limiting insertive movement of the bit within said, bit block socket when said bit is in either of its end for end positions within said socket, and holding means engageable with the bit body for holding the bit within said bit block socket when said bit is in either of its end for end positions, said holding means engageable with the abutment means which are not acting to limit bit insertion respectively when said bit is in either of its end for end positions within said socket. 1
10. A cutter chain comprising a bit block having a socket, a double-ended, reversible cutter bit insertable in said bit-receiving socket, said bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a rhomboid, means on said block engageable with one such side surface of the bit body for clamping the opposed side surface to one wall of the bit block socket, and means on the bit body engageable with an outer surface of the bit block for limiting insertive movement of the bit within the bit block socket.
11. A double-ended, reversible cutter bit having a narrow elongated body terminating in cutting portions at its opposite ends and provided, in side elevation, with end and side surfaces lying in the sides of a rhomboid, the cutting portions at the opposite ends of the bit body providing cutting points at the opposite sides of the bit, and means formed on the opposite side surfaces of the bit body viewed in side elevation, providing abutments respectively engageable with an outer surface of a bit block for limiting insertive movement of the bit within a bit block socket and with means for holding the bit within a bit block socket.
