This invention relates to ice bags and has particular relation to a temperature controlling bag especially adapted for use on that portion of the head adjacent the eyes.

Certain diseases affect portions of the head adjacent the eyes. In the treatment of these diseases, it is sometimes necessary to place at the affected portions, a hot or cold bag. For example, in the treatment of sinusitis, it is often desirable to place a cold compress or water bag on the areas near the eye. To do this, it is necessary to cover up the eye or eyes, and in addition, the bag sometimes does not fit very closely to the irregular surfaces adjacent the eyes. i The covering of the eye makes it necessary to uncover when it is desired to see. In addition, the temperature of the eye itself is affected by the bag, which is not desired. To have the bag out of contact with a portion of the affected parts, renders its use ineffective to perform the desired function at the places where the bag fails to contact.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved ice or water bag for use adjacent the eyes.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a temperature controlling bag for application to the head adjacent the eye without interfering with the use of the eyes.

Another and still further object of the inven- 30 tion is the provision of such a temperature controlling bag as will fit the contours of the face adjacent the efi.

Another and still further object of the invention is the provision of such a pair of temperature controlling bags which may be made to correspond to the contours of the right and left sides of the face with means to secure the two bags together across the bridge of the nose and around the back of the head thus securing the same to the head.

Referring to the drawing wherein I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention,

The same reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the figures of the drawing.

The numerals I0, I0 designate respectively the bags for the right and left eyes, each having an uncovered space through which the eye may see. The material for these bags is rubber or any other similar or suitable material.

At the inner or portion next the nose are located securing tabs II, II. These are secured together by the nose-piece i2. This may be of metal or of rubber or of any other suitable material. At the outer sides of the bags are located 15 tabs l3, [3' to which are secured the ends of the strap M which may have an elastic piece l4. Snap fasteners l5, l5 are provided to facilitate the putting on and taking off of the bag or bags.

It is to be observed that when only one bag is 20 needed, the other may be placed in place without filling with the temperature regulating medium as ice or hot water. In this way, only those parts are temperature controlled which are affected.

If desirable, a pad l6 having, an eye opening I1, 25 as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, may be substituted for the bag. This padmay be made of rubberized canvas or of any other flexible material or of a stiff material, as desired. It is clear from the construction as shown that this eye pad could be reversed for the eyes, using it as a sub stitute for the right or left bag as it may be found necessary.

At a suitable place, as at the forward upper edge, is a neck l8 having a slit opening lBa therein, as shown in Figs. 3 and 3a,. The shape of the neck l8 and the opening l8a is such that the slit is normally in a closed condition.

To open the slit for the insertion or removal of ice or water, the ends are pressed together. This action causes the slit to open. After the filling or emptying operation is over, the release of the neck permits the slit to close. To securely hold the sides of the slit together and prevent leakage, I provide a clip 19. This clip is of spring metal and. is so shaped that when in place, it will firmly press the slit to a tightly closed position. In removing or replacing the clip, it is moved endwise to or from its position.

The body portions of the bags Ill, l0 preferably have a relatively heavy or stiff front portion Ilia, which serves as a stiffening member for the bag. This front portion "la is stiff relatively to the face-engaging portion lllb. This latter may be of very soft rubber which serves as the temperature controlling surface. The general shape of that portion of the bag at the rear of the front portion lfla is such as to fit the contour of the average face. The thin wall of the rear portion lob affords the flexibility necessary to provide the difference in the different face contours. With the constructed shape of the face-contacting portion of the bag so that it substantially fits every face, the flexibility ofthe rear portion makes it possible to contact all of the desired portions of the face without undue pressure on any portion.

In using this invention, the clip I9 is first removed, the neck I8 is pressed at its ends, opening the slit l8a. After filling the bag with the cooling or heating medium, the neck is released, the clip is replaced.

If two bags are to be used, they are both filled as described. They are then connected together by the nose piece l2. The snap members l5, l5 are separated, the band l4 placed around the head and the snap members connected together.

If it is desired to use the bag on only one eye, the heating or cooling medium is not placed-in the bag which covers the other eye. Or the pad I6 is connected in place of the bag-not to be used. If desired, the band I may be connected to the sides of a single bag l0.

There are many advantages in using my invention. The shape of the bag with the correct size covers only the affected parts. The use of the eyes is not interfered with. The soft face-engaging portion shaped for the average face, insures the proper pressure, thus making the wearing of the device more comfortable. The separate bags for each side render it possible to have greater comfort, particularly when lying down.

The device as supplied provides for two modifications-one with the two bags I0, 10 in place, the other with the pad replacing one of the bags.

Fig. 7 illustrates a modification in the construction of the nose-piece. The numerals H0 and (I illustrate the bags for the individual eyes, which bags are connected together with a thin soft rubber nose-piece I I2.

While I have illustrated and described my invention in detail, I desire to have it understood that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. A temperature controlling device comprising a bag of a size to reach from adjacent the nose of a patient to a point beyond the eye, the bag having a ring-shape with its opening for the eye of the patient and having a soft inner wall adapted to fit and contact with the face above, below and at the sides thereof, the inner wall of the ring being of a width to extend from the inner edge of the eye to a point adjacent to the center of the face.

2. A temperature controlling device comprising a flexible bag having a size to reach from adjacent the nose of a patient to a point beyond the eye, the bag having a ring-shape with an opening for the eye of the patient and having a temperature controlling surface of a shape to fit the surfaces of the ,features of the patients face above, below and at the sides thereof, the inner side of the ring being of a width to extend from the inner edge of the eye to a point adjacent to the center of the face.

3. A temperature controlling device comprising a bag having a size to reach from adjacent the nose of a patient to a point beyond the eye, the bag having a ring-shape with its opening for the eye of the patient and having a, temperature controlling surface sufiiciently flexible and of a shape to fit the surfaces of the features of the patient's face above, below and at the sides thereof, the inner side of the ring being of a width to extend from the inner edge of the eye to a point adjacent to the center of the face.

4. A temperature controlling device comprising a pair of bags, each having a compartment for ice or water, the bags each being of a ring-shape to fit around the eye and providing an opening for vision, means for detachably connecting the bags together and means for securing them to the head of the wearer, the inner side of each ring being of a width to extend from the inner edge of the eye to a point adjacent to the center of the face.
