Description
A. MULLER SKIBINDING- Nov, 30, 1937.
Filed March 5, 1936" phi.
Patented Nov. 30, 1937 UNITED STATES 2,100,686 SKIBINDING Alfred Muller, Munich, Germany Application 3 Claims.
This invention relates to ski-bindings oithat type in which a cable has at one end an adjusting device and at the other To fix such bindings in position the cable is passed through a hole in the ski and the foot is brought into .the proper position on the ski, the cable being then passed around the heel portion 01' the boot and the two ends of thecable are united and adjusted so that the cable bears tightly against the rear portion of the boot and holds it in position on the ski.
The invention has for its object a novel construction of the cable as regards the adjusting device as well as the holding device, whereby very great advantages and technical progress are obtained. The cable can be adjusted to such an extent that the binding can be used for boots of any size for the smallest to the largest, and that the cable can be readily exchanged and be adjusted up to a millimeter.
Anv embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows the binding in top plan view, the
dash-dot line illustration showing that it is possible to shorten the cable by the heel portion of the tightening spring.
Fig. 2 shows the clamping lever partly in side elevation and partly in section on line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 2 showing the cable in tightened position.
Fig. 5 is a section on line V-V of Fig. 4.
The binding consists of a commonly used tightener a in the form of a spiral spring. The clamping lever f of the tightener a comprises a cagelike nipple f designed to hold the thickened end g of a cable b. This cable b is encased in a spiral spring 0 which serves as cover and for securely holding the cable in the nipple I The nipple f has a slit f through which the cable I) can be removed after the spiral spring 0 has been pushed up on the cable. The other end of cable b extends through an internally threaded hole d of a sleeve d the other inwardly bent end i of which loosely engages over the flanged outer end h of a sleeve j inserted in the corresponding end of the tightening spring a. The cable b.extends through the tightening spring a and is fixed in a block e of the stretching lever f. The cable b can be shortened or lengthened by corresponding end a holding device.
March 3, 1936, Serial No. 88,881 Germany July 24, 1985 turning of sleeve d, the screw threaded hole d of which screws on the windings o1 spiral spring 0 in the one or other direction shortening or lengthening the eflective portion of cable b not only for fine adjusting but also for adapting it to the size of the boot.
The improvement of this ski-binding consists in that the effective length oi. the cable b can be shortened even on the portion extending through the tightening spring a so that the binding can be used for a boot of very small size as well as for boots of the largest size, the cable being well protected by the covering spring 0. For exchanging the cable b no tool is necessary but only unscrewing of sleeve d on the one side of the boot and removing through slot f on the other side 01' the boot.
I claim:-
1. A ski-binding, comprising in combination a tightener in the form of a spiral spring, a cable extending through this tightener spring and pro- Jecting from one end thereof, a clamping lever at one end of said tightener one end of said cable fixed in this clamping lever, a' device on this clamping lever for securely but detachably holding the other end of said cable. a spiral spring encaslng the projecting portion of said cable, and a turnable sleeve attached to the other end of said tightener spring and screwed on said cable and adapted to shorten and lengthen the effective portion of said cable in accordance with the direction in which said device is turned, the inner open end of the sleeve bent inwards and engaging over the outwardly flanged end of a sleeve inserted in tightener spring.
2. A ski-binding as specified in claim 1, in which the cable is covered by a spiral spring, the sleeve is closed at the outer end and has in this closed end spiral spring which covers the cable.
3. A ski-binding as specified in claim 1, in which the end of the projecting portion of the cable is thickened and the clamping lever comprises a cage-like nipple having a lateral slot for the insertion projecting end of the cable adapted to press against the outer side of said nipple and pull the thickened end of the cable to securely hold said cable in said nipple.
