UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to bomb protection apparatus, an object of the invention being to provide an apparatus which may be located on a building, bridge, or any other location and which tothe bars I1, and the lowermost net 2I connected to the bars I6. Thus the apparatus provides a seriesv of normally horizontal superimposed nets spaced apart, and while I have shown will function to protect the structure from aerial three of these iinaetsit ob'lous that thetspeiciiics: 5 bombs dropped by aircraft and the like. number may varie e uppermos ne More specifically the invention includes a series is the weakest, the next lower net 20 is stronger, of spaced, superimposed nets located above the and the lowermOst net 2| is the strongest 0f the structure to be protected, said nets varying in three. This varying strength may be accomstrength and texture and having differing spring plishedfby the texture and mesh of the nets and tension means which operate singly or together also bxlvarying tensionirg men which I employ to check the fall of a bomb and prevent its exand w ch will now be escri e plosion, thus protecting the structure below. Rigid horizontal arms 22 are Xed in any de- The invention embodies many novel features of sired manner to the building structure or to the construction and combinations and arrangements base frame Il), and are located preferably at the l5 of parts, all of which will be more fully hereinends of the building and proJect outwardly thereafter described and pointed out in the claims. from as clearly illustrated. These arms are con In the accompanying drawingsnected to the pivoted frames above describe Fig. 1 is a broken view in elevation illustrating lithelt0 the CIOSS bars I6, l1, and i8, 0I' t0 the my improved apparatus in operative position on uprights I3, or to both as clearly shown, by means top of a structure, which for convenience of deof flexible stays 2 3 which have embodied in their scription will hereinafter be assumed is a buildlength coil springs 24. These springs 24 are of ing; varying tension, the strongest springs being with- Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation on the line in the stays connected to the shorter frames and 2--2 of Fig. 1; the other springs being successively lighter. These frames 2,5' may be fo'med in amf d esed This apparatus preferably comprises a suitable mamlr but I have Sl-OWH them as conslstmg 2Q'f base frame II, having at its ends brackets I2 in gngrotsi d011I1-df0rypitg ltig gli in l 35 Whlttuplgglllts rde 15; taxl srggeg amrr ward movement of the frames and also the sag of png s a" e (10.09' t Wl f th i the nets, I have shown ropes or cables 28 connectare rrafge t s? s' e 0 c oufse e n ing the outer ends of the arms. 22 with the upper vention is not limited to any specific number. of pcrtions of the frames, there being sumcient Slack these uprights I have shown for purposes of illusin Said games to allow the frames to move and 40 tration three sets of uprights at each end of the the nets to sag, but when this slack is taken up frame and have given these sets of uprights the. the frames and nets are stopped from further reference characters I3, I4, and I5, respectively. movement. While each set of uprights may consist of any The operation of the apparatus is as follows.: desired number, I have shown for purposes of When a bomb falls on the uppermost net I9, it illustration three uprights in each set. The upwill causethe net to sag and if the bomb is sui'li- 45 rights I3 are the shortest of the sets, the uprights ciently light and its momentum can be checked I4 of greater length than the uprights I3, and by the net, the uppermost net will alone function the uprights -I5 are of greater length than the to catch the bomb. and prevent its explosion. If, uprights I4. These sets of uprights are connected, however, the weightof the bomb or its momenrespectively, by cross bars I6, I'I and I8 so that the several sets of uprights and their cross bars form vertically disposed pivoted frames which support nets, the uppermost net I9 connected to the cross bars I8, the next lower net 20 connected tum is suicient it will not only force downwardly and. causev the upper net to 'sag but it will also` cause the-second net tosag, and so on, until the. third-net may be caused to. sag by -a bomb of sufdcient weight and'force.` In any event the series of nets are sufciently strong and have sulcient tension to stop the fall of any aerial bomb without exploding the same. The deecting frames 26 which project above the longer' end frames are arranged so that should a bomb fall in a plane which would strike the pivoted frames, the deflecting frames will serve tocontact with the bomb and cause it to be deflected so that it will not injure or destroy the vertically positioned pivoted frames.
While I have illustrated and described what I believe to be a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that various slight changes may be made with regard to the form and arrangement of parts Without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make! such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A bomb protection apparatus including a base frame, a series of upright frames of varythe frames and the sag of the nets.
2. A bomb protection apparatus including a 10 base frame, a series of upright frames of varying heights pivotally connected to the base frame, nets connecting the upper ends of pairs of said upright frames, xed arms extending horizontally from the base frame, stays connecting said arms with the upright frames, coil springs constituting portions of said stays, cables connecting said arms and said upright frames, said cablesV limiting the inward pivotal movement of the frames and the sag of the nets and bomb deecting frames secured to the upper ends of the highest net-supporting frames.
