Description
Patented Nov. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to checks, and more particularly to checks of the type which are generally designated parcel checks.
It is an object of my invention to provide a check which can be quickly and readily afllxed to baggage.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a check which having once been affixed to baggage cannot be readily reused.
Considerable money is lost at the parcel check-1 ing stations by attendants who re-use a check and keep the fee for such re-use without turning it in at the end of the day. My check will minimize this re-use of the same check.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a parcel check which is strong and sturdy in construction yet which is simply made, and which can be produced in quantities at relatively small cost.
With these and other objects in view, which may be incident to my improvements, the invention consists in the parts and combinations to be hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements comprising my invention may be varied in construction, proportions and arrangements, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In order to make my invention more clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawing means for carrying the same into practical effect without limiting the improvements in their useful applications to the particular constructions which, for the purpose of explanation, have been made the subject of illustration.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of my parcel check showing the indicia on the passenger stub;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the other side of my 4 parcel check, showing the indicia on the end of the body portion;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing my check applied to baggage with the passenger stub removed.
45 Referring to the drawing, I have shown a body portion I comprising two halves 2 and 3, which are adapted to be folded under a line 4. The half 3 of the body portion, at its free end, has identifying indicia indicated at 5. This identifying indicia comprises an auditors number 6, and other data. The end of the half 3 of the body portion l which is free and opposite the auditors number 6 is adapted to have a gummed area I, and printed in large letters on the gummed 55 area are the words gum here. At the bottom of the half 2 is a weakened area 8 in the form of a perforated line. The gummed area is sufficiently large to cover the area taken up by the auditors number at 6.
Attached to the bodyportion 2 is a passenger 5 stub 9 which lies directly below the perforated line 8. This passenger stubcarries identifying indicia l0 and an auditors number I l corresponding to the auditors number 6 on the free end of the body portion 3. 0
The material from which this parcel check may be made is in general a heavy cardboard which is flexible and stiff, and yet has a certain amount of resilience. Other types of material can be used.
It has been a problem to prevent re-use of baggage checks, which re-use is attended with many disadvantages and dangers. By having the auditors number on the free end of the body portion directly over the gummed portion, it is extremely difficult for the parcel check to be re-used. Heretofore, parcel checks which did not have this provision of having the auditors number on the body portion with the gum on the opposite side and of sufiicient area to overlie the auditors number were subject to re-use. If an attendant tries to re-use the check, he will either injure the auditors number 6, or the words gum here which cover a substantial portion of the gummed area 1 will show injury.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A parcel check comprising a body portion of uniform width adapted to be folded on itself, a passenger stub detachably attached to the body portion and having an identifying indicia thereon, similar identifying indicia on the body portion at the other end thereof, and an adhesive area on the body portion directly underlying the identifying indicia inthe gummed position and on the opposite face of the body portion which is adapted to be gummed to the body portion after the body portion is folded on itself to afiix the check to a parcel, whereby danger of re-use of the check is minimized.
2. A parcel check comprising a body portion of flexible stifi material of uniform width adapted to be folded on itself, a passenger stub detachably attached to the body portion and having an auditors number thereon, a similar auditors number on the body portion adjacent the other end thereof, an adhesive area having the words gum here on the body portion adjacent the auditors number and on the opposite face of the body portion directly underlying the auditors number in the gummed position which is adapted to be gummed to the body portion after the body portion is folded on itself to aflix the check to a parcel, the gummed area being of such a size as to be sufiiciently large to cover the area taken up by the auditor's number on the body portion and the words gum here on the gummed area, the words on such area being sufliciently large to cover a. substantial portion of the gummed area.
