GUN AND HUNTING KNIFE COMBINATION Filed April 22, 1937 6 l6 1/ I w EJ12226 JJliZmzflg Patented Nov. 2, 1937 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE Vernon Foley and James J. Henning, Portland, Oreg.
Application April 22, 1937, Serial No. 138,445
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination wherein a hunting knife is carried within the confines of a gun stock for ready removal when desired for use.
It is a particular object to provide a construction wherein the improvements maybe built into a gun stock as an attachment as well as built into the same initially.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a gun stock, partly in section to disclose details;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the knife released and in position for removal, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the latch means for the knife.
In carrying out the invention, a bore or recess 5 is drilled or otherwise provided longitudinally of a gun stock 6, being open at the butt end of the latter.
A hunting knife 1 is adapted to be removably disposed within the bore or recess 5. Such knife may be of any desired construction. However it comprises a blade 8 and a handle 9, the latter if desired being of metal, although it may be of wood or any other suitable material.
The free end of the blade 8 is adapted to engage in the bifurcation ill of a slidable follower l l of wood or any other suitable material with which the blade is adapted to contact to avoid injury or metal to metal contact. The follower II is cushioned by an expansive coil spring I2 which is fastened at I 3 to the follower and at l4 to a disk l5, removably or permanently fastened in the bore 5 as preferred.
A butt plate It is removably fastened as by screws I? to the stock. Such plate may be of any desired material, for instance leather, rubber, metal or the like. A notch i8 is cut in the wood or other material of the stock 6, being open at the butt end and at the bore 5, and overlapped by the butt plate Hi.
The handle of the knife 9 has an end plate l9 adapted to fit and occupy an opening in the butt plate, substantially flush with the outer surface thereof. Transversely slidable on the handle 9 is a latch 2| which is urged to projected position by an expansive spring 22 contacting therewith and housed within the handle. An operating pin or the like 23, which may be a set screw, passes through an elongated slot 24 in the plate l9 and is screw threaded to the latch 2|.
As a result of the construction described, the knife is normally detachably secured within the bore 5 through the engagement of the latch 2| in the notch [8 as best shown in Figures 1 and 4. In this position, the spring I2 is compressed. The knife is guided to operative position by engagement of the blade in the bifurcation III, insuring alignment of the latch with the notch is. When it is desired to remove or use the knife, the pin 23 is slid to retract the latch 2| against the tension of the spring 22 whereupon the spring l2 expands and partly ejects the knife as shown in Figure 3, so that it may be readily removed for use.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
We claim as our invention:
1. In combination, a stock provided with a bore open at one end thereof, said stock having a notch in communication with the bore, a knife removably disposed within the bore, latch means on the knife removably engageable in said notch, a butt plate on the stock overlapping the notch, a plate on the knife, said butt plate having an lope-ning aligned with the bore and normally occupied by the second mentioned plate, said second mentioned plate having an elongated slot, said latch means being a latch member slidable transversely of the knife, an operating pin passing through the elongated slot and connected to the latch member, and follower means within the bore engageable by the knife to protect it and insure alignment of the latch member with the notch.
2. In combination, a stock provided with a bore open at one end thereof, said stock having a notch in communication with the bore, a knife removably disposed within the 'bore, latch means on the knife removably engageable in said notch, a butt plate on the stock overlapping the notch, a plate on the knife, said butt plate having an opening aligned with the bore and normally occupied by the second mentioned plate, said second mentioned plate having an elongated slot, said latch means being a latch member slidable transversely of the knife, an operating pin passing through the elongated slot and connected to the latch member, follower means within the bore engageable by the knife to protect it and insure alignment of the latch member with the notch, comprising a bifurcated slide, and expansive spring means associated with the slide to urge projection of the knife.
