BELT CONSTRUCTION FOR GARMENTS Filed May 9, 1936 Patented Oct. 26, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.

This invention relates to a garment having a top portion extending about the waist of the wearer, such as a skirt or pair of trousers, and particularly to a belt used in combination with such a garment.

Some garments such as trousers are well fitted at the top and are intended to be used with suspenders to hold them at the right height. If such trousers are worn with a belt which extends loosely around the outside thereof at the top, the belt must hang from the hips of the wearer and the trousers are not properly supported.

It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and eflicient means for supporting a garment, such as a pair of trousers, in proper position.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a simple and efficient means for properly supporting a pair of trousers, which means are disposed at the inner side thereof and are readily accessible through the usual front opening of said trousers.

It is another object of the invention to provide a simple and efiicient means for properly supporting trousers comprising a belt secured to the inner side of said trousers adjacent the top thereof, which belt is secured adjacent its top edge and is provided with spaced stiffening means.

It is still another object of the invention to provide a novel and convenient method for constructing a garment such as a skirt or a pair of trousers, which garment is provided with suitable supporting means. v

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:-

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the top portion of a pair of trousers equipped with the invention;

Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of a belt structure used, some parts being broken away and others shown in vertical section;

Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the top portion of the trousers showing how the belt is connected and positioned; and

Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows.

Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 a top portion of a pair of trousers 5 is shown. Said trousers have a waist portion 5a and leg portions 51). The waist portion 5a is provided with the usual Waistband formed by a hem 5 at the top and an extra strip of material 5g stitched to the hem 5 and at one edge and to the trousers at its other edge. Said trousers have the usual front opening extending Vertically therein, which 5 opening is adapted to be closed by the button holes 50 on one flap 512 which will engage but-' tons (not shown) on the other flap 5e. Buttons 6 are shown at the inner side of portion 5a adapted to be connected to supporting suspenders when the latter are used.

In accordance with the present invention a belt or strip of fabric 1 is provided which may be made of any strong fabric and said strip will be provided with a hem or binding 8 as shown in Figs. 2 to 4. Said binding 8 is secured to both edges of strip 1. The strip or belt 1 is also provided with a plurality of spaced stiffening members 9 which extend transversely thereof. Strips 9 may be of metal or bone and are enclosed in a fabric cover 9w, the ends of which are secured beneath the edges of the binding 8. A quite narrow strip l of strong fabric material is provided and this is laid along one edge portion of belt 1 and overlapping the same. Strip i0 is then secured to belt 1 by one or more rows of stitching ll. When belt 1 has been secured to strip I!) said belt and strip are disposed along the inner side of trousers as shown in Fig. 3 with strip l0 engaging said inner side and said strip I0 is then continuously secured to said trousers by one or more rows of stitching H. The stitching I2 is terminated a short distance from the front opening in the trousers, or in other words, a short distance from the edges of flaps 5d and 5e. After strip I0 is thus secured belt 1 is folded downwardly as illustrated in Fig. 3 and takes the position shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that belt 1 is thus secured only adjacent its top edge and. depends from the secured strip Ill. The ends of the belt 1 are equipped with some suitable connecting means such as the clasps l3.

When the belt is so secured and the trousers put on by the wearer they are drawn up to proper position and before the flaps 5d and 5e are closed the connecting means or clasps l3 are connected. The belt 1 is thus brought to position to proper- 1y support the trousers. The stiffening means 9 prevent the belt 1 from wrinkling and also act to hold the trousers in desirable flat position. After the clasps [3 are closed the front of the trousers can be closed as usual and the belt 5 and its connecting means are not visible from the outside.

The material from which belt 1 is made could, if desired, have some elasticity.

From the above description itwill be seen that applicant has provided a very simple, neat and efficient means for holding trousers or a skirt in proper position. The structure of the belt used is very simple, can be very quickly applied to the garment and is very easily operated. The garment so equipped is very comfortable and presents a much neater and more desirable appearance than when a belt is used on the outside of the trousers. The garment is also more properly supported. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and has been found to be very successful and efiicient. The same is being commercially made. It will, of course, be understood thatrvarious changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement'and proportions of theapparatus and in the steps and sequence of steps of the method without departing from the scopeof applicants' invention, which, generally stated, consists in a method and apparatus capable of carrying out defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:-
