3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in container assembling devices.
This isa division of my application Serial No. 66,692, filed March 2, 1936, for containers and assembling devices therefor.
The main. object of this invention is to provide an apparatus or device for use in the setting up of cylindrical containers of box or container board or similar stock.
Other objects relating to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- 1n:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the side wall member blank forming a carton adapted to be assembled by my device.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container in collapsed or knockdown form, illustrating the top and bottom members cooperative therewith to form the completely assembled container.
Fig. 3 is a view partially in side elevation and partially in vertical section of the device or apparatus for use in assembling the parts of the container, the parts of which are shown ln section.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view ,of the container after the bottom portion has been assembled therewith on the device of the invention.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 6, illustrating the relation of the container part/as assembled on my device.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view partially in vertical section of my oimproved container in completely assembled condition.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the parts of my container in disassembled relation.
The improved container of my invention, as described in the above identied copending application, comprises a tubular side wall member I, end walls 2 and 3, the end wall`3 being the top wall or cover, and the wall reinforcing or supporting and retaining bands or hoops 4 and 5.
the hoops being duplicates but designated by separate numerals to facilitate description.
The side wall member ls formed of a blank 6 of fibrous material such as box or container board of suitable quality and thickness having a sealing flap 1 at one end which is lapped upon and glued to the other end of the wall member preferably further secured by means of the metal stitches or staples 8. The container is designed for the pack- 88h18 of heavy materials and therefore the fastening means 8 is verydesirable in addition to The wall member is preferably longitudinally scored at I0 to permit collapsing, as shown in Fig. 2, when the hoops or annular retaining members d and 5 are removed or before they are applied to assemble the parts. These hoops or annular retaining members have inwardly turned or beaded edges I I. The disk- like end members 2 and 3 are of such diameter as to fit within the hoop members and rest upon the outer beads or inturned edges thereof in overlapping relation to the ends of the container when the hoop members are in telescoping engagement with the ends of the container. When the hoop members are pushed upon or telescoped upon the wall members, the flaps 9 are held under the compressive stress of the bead portion of the hoops, but as soon as the beads have passed beyond the edges of the flaps, the flaps spring outwardly of their own resilience and engage behind the inner beads, thus securing the end members in position on the body.
To add to the holding capacity of the side walls and flaps, they are preferably iluted at I2; that is, they have projecting lugs which very securely engage behind the inner beads of the hoops so that the bottoms or tops are capable of withstanding a load imposed thereon when the container is filled without likelihood of the device accidentally opening. f
When used as an ice cream container or as a` dispensing container for other material which may be dipped from the container, I preferably provide the top member with perforations I3 arranged in inwardly extending converging relation from one edge of the end member 3 and terminating in the U-shaped slit I4. Slits I5 are provided opposite the end of the U-shaped 'slit to facilitate the engagement of a tool beneath the tongue portion I6 of the tearout I1. The tearout I1 enables the ready opening of the containers for dipping out the contents.
'Ihe containers as shown and described in my copending application are well adapted for embodiment in containers of considerable length, such as may be used for the packaging or wrap ping of linoleum, shade cloth, and rolled up fabries or cloth and the like.
To facilitate the ready setting up of the container, I provide the packer with a device such vas is illustrated in Fig. L3, consisting of an upright I8 mounted on a suitable base I9, the upright being preferably in the form of a rod or tube. On the top of this upright, I mount a disk 20 having a diameter corresponding to the internal diameter ofthe container, so that the wall member may be, telescoped over the same as shown in Fig. 3. A base plate ZI is mounted for vertical adjustment on the upright and is secured in its adjusted position by means of set screw 22. The base plate carries a cone 23 having a diameter at its base or bottom 24 corresponding to the internal diameter of the cone.
In use, the base plate is adjusted to correspond to the length of the container to be set up and a container wall member I is telescoped over the top disk 20 and pushed down upon the base member 3 therein may be telescoped into locking engagement with the upper retaining aps of the container, the contents of the container ordinarily serving to bring the upper portion of the filled container to a cylindrical form so that the top hoop maybe easily slipped into position.
It will be apparent that I have provided a device of exceeding simplicity and efliciency for assembling the improved container of my co-Y pending application or containers similar thereto. The adjustability of the cone carrying base plate 2| renders the device adaptable for setting up a great-variety of lengths of container and it is obvious that by altering the shape of cone 23, a number of diering cross sectional forms may be accommodated. The simplicity of the device renders it possible to furnish packers with the same at small cost to stimulate the use of the containers disclosed in this .application.
I have illustrated and described my improvepractical.
ments in an embodiment which I have found very I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, kvwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for use in assembling containers,l
comprising an upright having a base thereon adapted to hold the upright in fixed operative position on a supporting surface, a top disk flxedly mounted on said upright and having a diameter corresponding to the internal diameter of the container to be assembled,` and a base plate adjustably mounted on said upright for vertical adjustment thereon and provided with a centering cone slidably embracing the upright at the apex of the cone, the diameter of said cone at its base corresponding to the internal tainer, comprising a member corresponding in shape and size at its base to the internal shape of the container and tapering to an apex slidable on said supporting means, and means for adjustably securing said member to' said supporting means. n
3. A device for assembling' cylindrical containers, comprising means for distending acontainer at one end thereof, means for supporting said means, said distending means being iixedly `secured to said supporting means, a basel for tainer and tapering to an apex at said supporting means.
