1 Claim. (01. 294m) .This invention relates to a combined toolholder and, chip breaker particularly. adapted to be mounted on the tool slides of lathes, planets and similar machine tools.
An object of the present invention is to provide .an improved holder for a small tool bit suitably housed within a body member and adapted to be readily mounted within thevordinary tool post of a lathe, planer or the like, there being mounted a in the holder a bar adjacent the tool and in the that they will be broken up or deflected away from the work.. i Another object of the invention is to mount this chip breaking means directly above the cutting surface of the tool over which the chip passes,
the breakeribeing adjustable to several positions relative to the cutting edge so that for different depths of cut or classes of work being operatedon the breaker may be laterally positioned relative to the cutting edge to obtain the necessary breaking, up or deflection of the chips or cuttingswith a minimum of power absorption.
With the above and other objects in may invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification I have shown my invention embodied in a two-part tool holder for lathes or planers within which is adjustably and removably mounted a cutting tool preferably of special tungsten carbide or other selected high speed cutting steel removably mounted in the holder. It will be understood, however, that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claim appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a complete holder 5 showing the inserted cutting tool and the chip breaking or deflecting member in proper adjusted operative position.
Fig. 2 is a complete side elevation of the tool holder, parts being broke away to more clearly show the construction.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the complete 0011 and chipbreaking member; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the holder takent upon the plane of line 4-4 of. Fig. 2.
In the above mentioneddrawmg I haveshown but one embodiment of the; invention whichis now deemed preferable: but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be, made within the scope of the-appended clairn-without departing from the spirit'of the invention.
tionmay include the following principal parts:
First, a tool holder formedoftwomembers one above the other and adapted to enclose acutting tool therebetween partially within both'of thesemembers; second, adjusting means for positioning the cutting tool generally longitudinally within the holder; third, a bar retained within the upper of the two tool holder members disposed parallellyto the'tool-an'd resting against the upper or cutting surface of the tool but spaced a short distance laterally from the cutting edge; and fourth, adjustingmeans for the bar, the bar being clanipedwith the tool when the holder is in operative position. 5
" Referring more in detail to the figuresof the drawing, I provide'a tool holderformed by'a 10 Briefly and in its preferred aspect, my invenlower member I0 and" an upper member .H.X
These two members -whenassembled provide a tool holder of conventional length and crosssection for mounting within the tool postof a lathe cross slide, planer tool head or the like.- As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, these members It and II are fitted together along an oblique plane surface and are retained in proper relative longitudinal position by a transverse key i2 entering alined slots within the lower and upper members 10 and II. Preferably the key I2 may be suitably secured within the slot in the lower member ,I 0 and loosely or slidably mounted within the slot in the upper member H enabling the members of the tool holder to be readily separated andreturned to proper relative positions.
Within the lower member ID is a recess or slot l3 extending parallelly with the upper or oblique surface of the lower member and adapted to ac-' commodate a cutting tool or bit ll inserted.
therein. The tool I 4 may extend somewhat beyond the end of the tool holder and has its extended end formed in any preferred manner as by grinding to provide any preferred form of cutting surfaces. As shown in Fig.3, the slot l3 within member I0 is disposed obliquely laterally of the holder to give the upper surface of the cutting tool I the necessary. rake. The end of the member ll adjacent the cutting tool may be extended forwardlydirectly below the tool to form a support therefor.
In order to adjustablyposition the cumin tool l4 longitudinally of the holder asrit becomes'worn. there is provided a-screw ll threaded'intotheh member II in a direction'substahtially parallel v movement away from the work;
