Description

G. P. BUTTERPIEL'D. Metal Founders Ladle.
No. 209,223. Patented Oct. 22,1878.
WITNESSES INYENTOR. 7 gave QMMM-JR gk W KTTDRNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE F. RUT ERFIELD, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT I N METAL-FOUNDERS L ADLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,223, dated October 22, 1878 application filed December 29, 1877 To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BUTTER- FIELD, of Boston, in the-county of Suffolk and construction and arrangement of a ladle for dipping and pouring out Babbitt metal, solder, &c., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents a ladle of any suitable form and size, made of cast-iron, and formed with a spout, B, having exterior screw-threads, as shown at b. On the side of the spout B there is a cap, 0, over a portion of the ladle, and from the under side of the same, in front of the opening to the spout, is a skimmer or lip, D, extending nearly to the bottom of the ladle, forming an opening into the bottom of the ladle, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This lip or skimmer is for the purpose of allowing the purer and denser metal at the bottom of the ladle to pass up the conduit formed between the ladle and the vertical lip, and holding back all dross, &c., in the ladle, to prevent the molds or boxes. The overhanging cap is to insure, when the ladle is tilted, the discharge from the outlet without spilling over from the same ladle. is formed a hollow boss, I, into which the han- I the same from passing into' the lighter metal floating on the top within the ladle.
With the ladle is furnished two or more snouts or nozzles, G G, of different sizes, which are interchangeable, and to be screwed on the spout B. By simply changing the snouts or nozzles, a large or small stream'can be poured On the side of the ladle dle H is screwed, the boss having interior screw-threads for that purpose. Bythis means one handle will answer for several ladles. The handle is made of hollow piping or tubing, having exterior screw-threads at one end to screw into the boss I, while the other end of the handle is twisted, as shown.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.l. A ladle having a conduit formed in the side thereof and opening into the bottom of the ladle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A ladle having a conduit formed in the side thereof and opening into the bottom of the ladle, and provided with an overhanging cap, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A cast-iron ladle provided with a spout, B, having exterior screw-threads and interchangeable snouts or nozzles G, of different sizes, attached in the manner as described, and for the purposes set forth. 7
' In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE FRANKLIN BUTTERFIELD.
