Claims.
This invention relates to cooking stoves of the type wherein the oven is located alongside of the fire box and the products of combustion are carried around the oven to the smoke exit. It has 5 for its principal objects to provide a one-piece,
seamless, light-weight oven that will resist corrosion and oxidation thereof and the accumulation of soot thereon; to provide leak-proof joints between the oven and the surrounding ues that will allow for the expansion'and contraction of the oven; and to provide for simplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness of design. The invention consists in the cooking stove and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, my 40 invention is shown embodied in a cooking stove of the kind adapted to burn solid fuels; but it is also applicable to stoves that are equipped to burn liquid and gaseous fuels. Said stove comprises a top wall I having openings therein closed by lids 2, a bottom wall 3, a front wall t, a back wall 5, end walls 6 and 'l and a vertical partition wall 8 that extends from front wall to back wall with its upper end spaced below the top wall. Located in the space between the p-artition 8 and the left hand end wall 6 are a fire box 9, a grate I0 and an ash pan II that are concealed by a hinged door I2. Mounted in the stove on the other side of the partition 8 is an oven I3 whose rear end portion fits loosely in an opening I4 provided therefor in the back wall 5 of the stove and whose front is open and in register with an opening l5 in the front wall I of the stove. The opening l5 is closed by a hinged door I9.
The oven I3 is spaced from the top wall I, end wall 'I and bottom wall 3 of the stove to form a horizontal top flue il, a vertical end flue I8 and a horizontal bottom flue I9. The bottom flue I9 communicates through an opening 29 in the rear wall 5 of the stove with the lower end portion of a vertical back flue 2l, which communicates at its upper end with an outlet opening or exit flue 22. The back flue 2I is formed by a dishe-d or pan-shaped plate 23 fixed to the back wall of the stove. The bottom flue I9 is spaced from the partition wall 8 by means of a wall 24 that extends from the front wall to the back wall of the stove beneath the oven. The bottom ue I9 is provided with a baille strip or wall 25 that extends forwardly from the rear wall of the stove and terminates short of the front wall thereof. The rear wall opening 29, which establishes communication between the bottom flue I9 and the back flue 2i, is located between the end wall 24 of said bottom flue and the baffle `25 therein. By this arrangement, the products of combustion are carried by the top flue I1 from the combustion space above the re box -across the top of the oven, thence downwardly through the end flue I8 along the end of the oven that is remote from said re box into the bottom ue I9 beneath the oven and around the baie 25, and thence through the opening 29 into the back flue 2| and upwardly along the back of the oven to the outlet flue 22.
The oven is spaced from the partition wall 8 to form a vertical ue 26 therebetween; and said partition is extended across and spaced from the top of the oven, as at 8a, forming a flue 2l between the top of the oven and the horizontal top flue VI, and terminates in a depending portion 9b that overhangs and is spaced from the end of the oven remote from said partition to form a vertical flue 23 between said end of said oven and the upper end portion of the end flue I8 that discharges at its lower end into said end flue. Air is admitted to the bottom of the flue 26, through openings 29 formed in the bottom wall 3 of the stove and is drawn upwardly through said flue between the partition wall 8 and the oven and thence through the flues 21 and 28 at the top and end of said oven where it mingles with the products of combustion passing downwardly through the end ue I8.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the portion of the back wall 5 of the stove between the end wall 1 and the baille 25 is provided below the oven with an opening that leads from the bottom flue I9 to the back flue 2| and is normally closed by means of a hinged door 30 operated by a pull rod 3| that is pivoted at one end to said door and is slidably supported at its opposite end in an opening provided therefor in the front wall of the stove. The pull rod is provided at its front end with a knob 32 that seats within a recess 33 provided therefor in the front wall of the stove, and said wall of said stove is provided at one side of the knob receiving recess with an opening that is closed by a removable closure member 34. The knob end of the pull rod 3|, l5 together with the closure member 34, are concealed by the oven door IB in the closed position thereof. By this arrangement, when the door or hinged section 3B of the back wall 5 is swung upwardly by means of the pull rod, the bottom portion of the back flue 2| is exposed and soot may be removed therefrom by means of a suitable scraping tool through the opening closed by the closure member 34; and the oven door l5 cannot be closed until the pull rod is pushed inwardly to close the door 3|) controlled thereby.
As shown in Fig. 3, leakage between the bottom flue, the baille 25 and the oven is prevented preferably by means of asbestos rope 35 seated in a longitudinal groove provided therefor in the top edge of said baille. A leak-proof expansion joint is provided between the front end of the oven and the front wall 4 vof the stove. Said joint comprises an outstanding iiange 36 at the front end of the oven and is provided on its front face with a rib 37 adapted to seat in a groove 38 provided therefor in the rear face of the front Wall of the stove. A suitable packing material 39 is interposed between the cooperating rib and groove portions of the oven and the front wall 40 of said stove; and the parts are drawn together tightly by means of a clamping plate 4D that overlaps the oven flange 36 and is secured to the wall of the stove by means of clamp screws 4|. A leak-proof expansion joint is also pro- 45 vided between the oven and the back wall 5 of the stove, this joint comprising a suitable packing material 42 that i'lts around the top and sides of the oven receiving opening |4 in said wall and is secured between said wall and a plate 50 43 secured thereto. 'I'he oven is supported in the opening |4 at each side thereof by means of a horizontal lug formed integral with said oven midway between the top and bottom thereof and seated within registering notches 44 provided 55 therefor in the back wall of said stove and in the packing retaining plate 43.
The oven is preferably made of an aluminum, or aluminum alloy, which is noted for its great heat conducting power and its resistance to oxi- 60 dation, corrosion and its smooth surface which resists the tendency for soot to accumulate thereon and form a heat insulating covering. The joints between the oven and the stove permit expansion and contraction of the oven due to 65 heat changes while preventing loss of heat or interference with the draft in the flue system. The oven is uniformly heated by the ue system which gives the products of combustion a circuitous course around the oven and'draws fresh 70 cool air into the space between theY end of the oven and the iire box and between the top of the oven and the top combustion flue, thereby preventing excessive heating of the oven at the hottest part of the stove. The foregoing con- 75 struction also permits soot to be quickly and easily removed through the clean-out opening in the front wall of the stove by operating the pullrod that controls the hinged rear wall section. The clean-out opening and operating end of the rod are concealed by the oven door in the closed position thereof; and the door cannot be closed until the rod is pushed inwardly far enough to close the hinged clean-out section.
Obviously, the hereinbefore described arrangement admits of considerable modification withlo out departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. A cooking stove having a re box, an alumile num oven located in said stove alongside of said fire box and spaced from said fire box and the Walls of said stove to form a flue system extending around the oven between the front and back Walls of said stove, the front and back walls of said 20 stove being provided with oppositely disposed openings, said oven being disposed with .its rear portion loosely fitting in the opening in the rear wall of said stove and with its open end in register with the opening in the front wall of said 20 stove, and leak-proof joints between said oven and the front and rear walls of said stove adapted to accommodate the expansion and contraction of said oven in all directions.
2. A cooking stove having a fire box, an oven 30 located in said stove alongside of said fire box, the front and back walls of said stove being provided with oppositely disposed openings', `said oven being disposed with its rear portion loosely fitting in the opening in the rear wall of said stove and with its open end in register with the opening in the front Wall of said stove, leak-proof joints between said oven and the fronty and rear Walls of said stove adapted to accommodate the expansion and contraction of said oven, and means for sup-porting said oven in said opening comprising a lug formed integral with said oven substantially midway of the tcp and bottom of each end wall thereof and seating within notches provided therefor in the portion of the back Wall 45 surrounding said oven.
3. A cooking stove having a re box,.a one piece metallic oven located in said stove alongside of said fire box, said oven being spaced from the walls of said stove to form a flue extending v from said fire box around the oven to an exit ue, the front and back walls of said stove being Drovided with oppositely disposedr openings, said oven being disposed with its rear portion loosely fitting in-the opening in the rear wall of said stove and with its open end in register with the opening inthe front wall of said stove, and leakproof joints between said oven and the front and rear walls of said stove adapted to accommodate y the expansion and contraction of said oven, the front joint comprising an outstanding flange on the front end of said oven provided with'a longitudinal rib, a groove in the rear face of the front wall of said stove adapted to accommodate said rib, packing material between said rib and said groove, and a clamping plate fixed to said front Wall and overlapping the outstanding rib on said oven.
4. A cooking stove having a i'lre box, a metallic oven located in said stove alongside of said fire y box, the front and back walls of said stove being provided with oppositely disposed openings, said oven being disposed with its rearportion loosely fitting in the opening in the rear wall of said p Y Stove and with its open end in register with the opening in the front wall of said stove, and leakproof joints between said oven and the front and rear walls of said stove adapted to accommodate the expansion and contraction of said oven, the front joint comprising an outstanding flange on the front end of said oven provided with a rib, a
groove in the rear face of the front wall of said stove adapted to accommodate said rib, packing material between said rib and said groove, and a clamping plate fixed to said front Wall and overlapping the outstanding ribI on said oven, the rear joint comprising a clamping plate fixed to the rear Wall of said stove adjacent to the oven receiving opening therein and packing material located between said plate and said rear wall and bearing against said oven.
5. A cooking stove having a re box, an oven located in said stove alongside of said re box, the front and back Walls of said stove being provided with oppositely disposed openings, said oven being disposed with its rear portion loosely fitting in the opening in the rear wall of said stove and with its open end in register with the opening in the front wall of said stove, and leakproof joints between said oven and the front and rear walls of said stove adapted to accommodate the expansion and contraction of said oven, the front joint comprising an outstanding ange on the front end of said oven provided with a rib, a groove in the rear face of the front Wall of said stove adapted to accommodate said rib, packing material between said rib and said groove, and a clamping plate xed to said front wall and overlapping the outstanding rib on said oven, the rear joint comprising a clamping plate fixed to the rear wall of said stove adjacent to the oven receiving opening therein and a packing member located between said plate and said rear Wall and bearing against said oven, and means for supporting said oven in said opening comprising a lug formed integral with said oven substantially midway of the top and bottom of each end wall thereof and seating within notches provided therefor in the portions of the back wall and clamping plate surrounding said oven.
