Description
E. B. WELCH 2,089,867
FURNITURE Filed Nov. 12, 1936 6 a 6 a ff u I H? 4 I d 7 v M 3 y I Z gywc wbob l n. II I EBJA/ehfi Patented Aug. 10, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to furniture, and it is an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind having a back adapted to be selectively adjusted into either a substantially horizontal position or a substantially vertical position as well as selective positions therebetween.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an article of furniture which is simple in construction yet possessing a maximum of strength and efficiency and which article comprises a back adjustable selectively into different positions as might be desired and wherein means are provided for effectively maintaining the back in its different selected adjustments.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved furniture whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective and of somewhat a diagrammatic character illustrating an article of furniture constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a back section being shown in a raised position and the bottom fabric being generally indicated by broken lines;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the movable section in raised position.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, my improved invention is comprised in a sofa bed type of furniture although it is to be understood that the same featurers can be comprised in a chair structure or the like.
As herein disclosed two end frames l are provided of substantially duplicate construction and each of which is rectangular in form. The members of each of the frames are of angle type with the flanges inwardly disposed. As is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the inwardly disposed flange a of the upper member I) only extends from one or the front end of the frame I to a point substantially midway of the ends of the member b. The length of this flange a may be varied as the requirements of practice may prefer. flange 0 of the rear or end vertical member 11 of each of the end frames l terminates a desired distance below the upper margin of the member 1) whereby is provided a shoulder e. By this formation the flange 0 constitutes a support as will hereinafter be more particularly referred to.
Bolted, as at 2, or otherwise rigidly secured to the upper members I) of the end frames I are the side members 3 of a stationary bottom section A. This section A, as herein disclosed, is substantially U-shaped in form. When the section A is in applied position it extends from substantially the inner extremities of the flanges a of the members b of the frames I along said flanges a to a point beyond the frames 1 so that the member 4 will be arranged a preferred distance outwardly from the adjacent ends of the frames. This, of course, may be varied as preferred.
The members 3 and 4 of the section A are angular in cross section with their flanges f inwardly disposed with the flanges of the side members or arms 3 lapping the flanges a.
Disposed through the members b closely adjacent to the inner ends of the flanges a are the pivot members 5 which are also directed through the slots 6 disposed longitudinally through the side arms I of a swinging or adjustable section B. This section B is also disclosed in the accompanying drawing as U-shaped and when in substantially a horizontal position, as illustrated in Figure 3, the side arms or members 1 contact from above with the shoulders e of the end frames l. At the same time the free end portions of the side arms or members i which extend beyond the pivot members 5 will contact from below with the flanges a of the members I) of the frames I. After this section B has been lowered to its substantially horizontal position it is moved inwardly so that the extended lip 8 continuing from the free end of each of the members or arms 1 will engage within the uppermost opening or recess 9 of an arcuate rack III. This rack l0 has its extremities welded or otherwise suitably secured to the upper member 19 and the lower member g of a frame i, said rack being concentrically arranged with respect to the associated pivot member 5.
If desired to adjust the section B into a raised position said section B is moved outwardly a distance sumcient to withdraw the lips 8 from interlocking engagement with the racks l0 and when the section B has been swung or adjusted into desired selective position said section is The inwardly disposed moved inwardly to allow these lips 8 to again interlock with the racks H] as permitted by the openings or recesses 9. This desired in and out movement of the section B is readily permitted by the slot 8 in each of the arms or members i of the section B.
In the present embodiment of my invention the arms or members I are of a length to position the intermediate member H of the section B, when in the horizontal position, a desired distance beyond or outwardly of the adjacent ends of the frames As indicated by broken lines in Figure 1 the members of the sections A and B have suitably anchored thereto a bottom or spring fabric S of any desired or preferred type, it only being necessary that such structure offer no hinderance or obstruction to the desired swinging movement or adjustment of the section B With respect to the section A.
From the foregoing, description it is thought to be obvious that an article of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be bers, said swingable frame having an elongated slot in each leg between the ends thereof, a pivot member carried by each end frame engaging in a slot of the swingable frame, an arcuate angle member secured to each end frame and provided with spaced apart notches in one side thereof, and means integral with the end of each leg of said swingable frame and engageable in a selected notch of said arcuate member to hold said swingable frame in adjusted angular relation with respect to said end frames.
