Patented Aug. 10, 1937 EINE'E'ED STATES PATENT QFFMIE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in beauty parlors, and more particularly to an imrovernent in hair waving machines of the type shown in Patent No. 1,982,156 issued November A primary object of the invention is to provide for relative movement between the seat or chair portion of the machine and the curling or waving unit associated therewith so that one may be shifted with respect to the other to enable an operator to more easily apply the curling devices without interference from the standard or post which supports the curling unit, and may otherr wise have more convenient access to the hair of 10 the patron in completing the waving operation.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a construction wherein the chair and waving instrumentalities are interconnected so as to move as a unit although each is movable or adjustable relative to the other.
A further object is to provide a construction wherein the standard which supports the electrical devices is adequately braced and guided with respect to the chair so that in all positions of adjustment the entire apparatus has the necessary stability inherently desirable in an apparatus of this kind.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing,
wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved apparatus.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail of the manner of mounting the medial portion of the standard on the chair back.
Similar references designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the draw- According to the embodiment shown in the drawing the invention includes in its organization a chair A of suitable construction mounted on casters A and a vertically adjustable and laterally shiftable standard B having the canopy or shade C intended to mask or conceal the electrical devices, such as curling irons and/or lamps or both, carried by the head or casing.
The chair may be provided beneath the seat thereof with a cross-brace or strap 1 while at the rear of the back of the chair there may be provided a guide rail or track 2 adapted to be engaged by the rollers 3 on the standard. This guide rail is preferably of arcuate formation for the major portion of its length and extends beyond the sides of the chair to permit the standard to move as far as possible to one side or the other and thereby give the operator a wide latitude of operating space at the rear of the chair. The rollers 3 are mounted in a bracket 4 carried by the standard and are grooved or otherwise shaped to conform to the cross-sectional shape of the guide rail 2. Thus the medial portion of the standard is braced with respect to the chair regardless of relative movement therebetween.
The curling device support or standard B is mounted on a base 5 which may be mounted on casters or their equivalent 6 and includes an extension or arm I pivotally engaging the crossbrace l of the chair as shown at 8.
With the arrangement shown, the standard B may be shifted on the pivot 8 and guide rail 2 to any desired setting with respect to the rear of the chair. Or, on the other hand the standard B may be held stationary and the chair moved relative thereto by manipulating the same about the pivot 8. Thus, whenever it becomes necessary for the operator to work from the rear of the chair, the back thereof may be made readily accessible.
Since the entire apparatus is mounted on casters, rollers, or equivalent anti-friction devices it is readily portable as to location or arrangement in a shop or room and can be easily placed with reference to electrical convenience outlets or plugs to obtain the necessary current for the waving or curling devices.
A distinctive feature of the invention is the provision of a chair or seat and an adjustable connected standard which may be moved laterally relative to the occupant of the chair, or the provision of a chair which may be moved relative to the standard. This standard may support the canopy referred to in the form of a lamp shade, and this shade may serve not only to conceal the electrical devices but also to house a lamp to flood the chair with light so that its occupant may read while being waited upon, and moreover, the operator may have ample light for the hair dressing operation. Also, the lamp or lamps L which may be fitted in sockets for that purpose in the head or casing, may serve as a pilot for indicating that the current to the curling devices is turned on.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be. resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:-
1. A duplex article of furniture comprising a chair including a supporting frame having a base embodying opposite frame parts, a brace connecting said parts, a standard for electrical devices located at the back of the chair, a base for said standard, an arm rigidly connected at one end to the standard and pivotally connected at its other end to said brace, and interconnected means between the medial portion of the standard and the rear of the chair to guide the stand ard during movement relative to the chair.
2. A duplex article of furniture comprisinga chair including a supporting frame having a base embodying opposite frame parts, a brace connecting said parts, a standard for electrical devices located at the back of the chair, a base for said standard, an arm rigidly connected at one end to the standard and pivotally connected at its other end to said brace, an arcuate track member carried by the back of the chair, and roller means carried by the standard and engaging said track.
3. An apparatus of the class described including a chair having a base portion, and a standard for electrical devices located at the back of the chair and having a pivotal radius-arm connection with the base part of the chair permitting lateral shifting of the standard with reference to the back of the chair, and standard guiding means carried by the chair.
4. An apparatus of the class described including a chair having a base part and an offset horizontally arranged guide at its back, and a standard for electrical devices located at the. back of the chair and having a pivotal radius arm connection with said base part, said standard also carrying floor rollers and having a cooperating engagement with said guide.
