UNITED S'I'A'I'Es PATEN'I' OFFICE.
VIL LIAM O. DAVIS, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IIVI PROVEMENT IN WRITING-TABLETS.
Specilieation forming' part of Letters Patent No. 208,966, dated October 15, 1878; application filed September 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. DAVIS, of Blooming'ton, in the county of McLean, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Tablets and Removable Backs and Covers therefor; and do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the aecompanying drawing's, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making; a part of this speeification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig'. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig'. 3 is a detailed view, showing' the parts disconnected.
This invention relates to improvements in the class of removable covers and backs for writing-tablets, and more particularly to improvements upon patent granted to me May 28, 1878, whereby said tablet is adapted to be applied to wooden backs, either with or without covers, the object of which is to use the same block 'and back or block and covers, and supply new tablets as fast as they are used up.
The invention consists of a wooden block formed in two parts, the main portions of which have the same relative thickness, the one to which the sheets are'adhesively secured sliding' into the other part, the latter being' supplied with a cover or not, as desired, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the exaet manner in which it is carried out.
In my former patent, before referred to, the sheets were adhesively secured to a wooden backing'. The advantag'cs of said wooden backing', being fully set forth in said patent, are not deemed necessary in the present case, to which the cover was also adhesively secured, said backing', however, being adapted to be refilled and used "'over and over again, thus producing a durable tablet at a small expense.
In my present case said wooden back is made in two parts, A B, the part A, towhich the sheets are adheisively secured, being' provided with a long'itudinal dovetailed tenon, a,
adapted to fit and slide in a oorresponding' long'itudinal dovetailed groove, b, in the part B of the back, the part B having' a cover or covers, O, adhesively or otherwise secured thereto, as desired.
It will be observed that the main portions of the two parts A B have the same relative thickness, so that when connected together, as shown, they forma solid wooden block, which not only perforrns the same functions as in my former patent, before referred toviz., holding' the paper firm until the last sheets are torn off, and stifi'ening the tablet in order to g'ive it the proper heft and smoothness desirablein fast writing but enables me to use the same block and back or block and covers, and supply new tablets as fast as the previous ones are used up.
The tablet proper is designed to be supplied as often as required, thus making' a new book or tablet with old cover or ornaniental block.
The cover O is also provided on its interior surface with triangular laps or corner-pieces c, between which and the cover the eorners of an absorbent or blotting' paper, D, are inserted, whereby said blotting'-paper can be readily removed and a new one substituted therefor when desired.
I am aware that removable covers for books have heretofore been used, and such I do not desire to claim, broadly, as my invent-ion; but
I claim as my invention In a writing-tablet, the herein-described wooden block to which the writing-'sheets and a cover or covers are secured, consisting' of the parts A and B, the main portions having the same relative thickness, and respeetively` provided with the (lovetailed tenon a and groove b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foreg'oing' I have hereunto set niy hand this 7th day of September, 1878.
TILLIAM O. DAVIS;
