Claims.
10 Fig. 2 is a partial view on the line II-II, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 With the parts in unlocking position and exposed by removal of the cover plate;
in locking position;
Fig. 5 is a View on the line yV--V, Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a view on the line VI-VI, Fig. 4; and Fig. 'l is a fragmentary View, similar to Fig. 3, disclosing a modied construction, more particularly adapted to locks herein of smaller dimensions.
Motor vehicle I of the sedan or multiplel door type of closed automobile has laterally adjacent openings or doorways 2, 3, spaced by frame member ll, opposite sides of which provide jambs 5, li, one at each opening. Doors 1, 8, serve as closure members for the openings 2, 3, respectively, and are normally operated from the exterior of. the vehicle by handles 9, andfrom the interior by handles III. Thehandles I 0 may not only serve as opening means but, by swinging in the opposite direction, may lock the doors against opening by means of the handles 9.
It is desirable that, under cert-ain conditions,
the door 2 be temporarily rendered inoperable,
as for example when small children are riding on the rear seat of the vehicle and may seek to opcrate the handle I0. In other instances, passengers may mistake the door operating mechanism for the window operating mechanism while the vehicle is in motion. The lock herein disclosed, may prevent the rear door from being opened until the front door has been opened and then only at the will of the driver or another who may be in control to release the lock for the rear door.
Mounted on jamb 6 by means of screws or bolts Il is plate I2 having opposing overhang portions I3, A Ill, inwardly extending thereover to provide a Way I5. Reciprocably along the Way I5 is slide I6 having extension Il therefrom providing operating means therefor as well as movement `limiting means determined by the length of clearway region I8 inthe overhang I4.
Angularly extending from the plate I2 is tubu- Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the paris lar guide I9 having tapered portion 2i! from the plate I2 to constant diameter portion 2I terminating at the face of the jamb 5. The guide I9 carries reciprocable bolt 22 having by pin 23 connected therewith flexible link 24 extending to slide I6. A suitable connection with the slide I6 is provided by loop 25 in the link 24 through opening 26 and iixed by solder 21. This is an eiective thrusting means for the linkage in the Way I5 without crimping of the exible link 24. lo By shifting the slide I6, the bolt 22 may be shifted into and out of opening 28 in the door 2 thereby providing the reserve supplemental locking means therefor. f A
While the lock of the disclosure has special utility in motor vehicles, it may be eiective between diiferent openings of one or more struc- 30 tures or even as a lock for a closure whether or not the operating means may be protected or remotely placed.
The parts being of thin materials are singly exible and the slide It is readily assembled in the way I5 even though it is of greater length than the clearwayv IB for the slide IB has reduced width terminus 3l! and by a slight nexing may be placed in operative relationship with the overhangs la, I4, (Fig. 3). 40
In the construction of locks embodying features of the invention herein, especially when of smaller dimension, the slide l5 may have a bifurcated terminus providing slide extensions 3l, thereby providing stability for the slide in its co- 45 action with overhangs I 4, I5; the loop 25 having connection therewith adjacent the central portion of the slide.
In lieu of the extension I'l and the clearway I8, operation of the lock may be 4controlled by 5o extension or pin 32'from the slide I6 extending through slot 33 in the face of the cover 29.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by United States Letters Patent isz- 1. For a. structure having a pair of laterally adjacent openings with a spacing member therebetween, a first and second closure respectively for the openings, the combination of a lock in the spacing member for the first closure, and operating means therefor mounted on a side of the spacing member and rendered inaccessible by and actuable independently of the second closure.
2. A lock comprising a bolt, a guide for the bolt. a slide, a way fo'r the slide angularly disposed to the guide, and a flexible link between said slide and bolt.
3. For a structure having a pair of laterally adjacent openings, a member therebetween providing a pair of parallel jambs, a first and second closure for said openings,the combination of a bolt shiftable to and from one of said jambs for locking the first closure, a slide shiftable along the other jamb, and linkage between said boltl and slide.
4. For a structure having a pair of laterally adjacent openings, a member therebetween providing a pair of parallel jambs, a rst and second closure for said openings, the combination of a bolt shiftable to and from one of said jambs for locking the rst closure, a slide reciprocably shiftable along the other jamb, and a flexible link between said bolt and slide.
5. For a structure having a pair of laterally adjacent openings, a member therebetween providing a pair of parallel jambs; a first and second closure for said openings, the combination of a bolt shiftable to and from one of said jambs for locking the rst closure, a slide reciprocably shiftable along the other jamb, and a flexible link between said bolt and slide, said slide rendered inaccessible upon closing the second closure.
6. A lock including a frame providing a way and a guide angularly extending therefrom, a
slide in said way, a bolt in said guide, and a exf ible link therebetween.
7. A lock for a closure comprising a plate providing a way, a tubular member extending angularly from said way, a slide shiftable in said way, a. bolt shiftable in said extension, and flexible linkage therebetween.
8. In a lock, a plate having oppositely disposed overhangs providing a way, a slide in said way having an operating extension, a cut-out region in one of said overhangs limiting shifting of the slide, said slide being of greater length than the cut-out region, and a reduced Width terminus for said slide for facilitating assembly with the way.
9. Ina lock, a plate having oppositely disposed overhangs providing a Way, a slide in said way having an operating extension, a cut-out region in one of said overhangs limiting shifting of the slide, a bolt, linkage between said bolt and slide, and a cover plate for the slide and way having snap assembly with the plate, said cover and plate cooperating to confine movement of the linkage to said way.
10.- For a structure including a pair of laterally adjacent openings spaced by a member providing a pair of parallel jambs, one for each opening, a first and second closure respectively for said openings, the combination of a lock for the first closure comprising a plate providing a way mounted on the jamb of the other closure, an extension therefrom providing a guide to the jamb' of the rst closure, a bolt in said guide, a slide in said Way, a flexible link between said slide and bolt, the bolt locking the first closure and the second closure being posltionable t0 render the slide inaccessible.
