This invention relates to cosmetic holders or the like. It is particularly intended for holding lip-sticks, but may be used for holding eyebrow pencils or other articles.

A general object of the invention is to provide a convenient cosmetic holder permitting the cosmetic or other article to be projected for use or withdrawn for carriage by the use of one hand only, in which the device is held.

Another object of the invention is to provide a one-hand cosmetic holder or the like of a construction permitting rapid and/or inexpensive manufacture and assembly.

Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of cosmetic holders or thelike,

particularly one-hand holders.

Various specific objects of the invention will be obvious from the following disclosure.

The upper end of the exterior casing is provided with a cover 5 hinged to the casing at 6 and provided with slotted depending flanges I, 1. Within the wall 2 of the exterior casing there is a vertically slidablesleeve'ii which makes a runningfit with the casing; and the sleeve is adapted to be held in any given longitudinal position through friction set up by an interposed spring strip 9 having two struck-out leaves l0, Ill, The upper end of the sleeve 8 is provided with a transverse pin II; and when sleeve '8 is in its lowermost position in the casing, the ends of the pin H are received-in vertical'slots l2, l2 in the upper end of the exteriorcasing. Within'the sleeve 8 there is slidably mounted a cosmetic carrier [4- adapted to receivea' lipstickor other article l5.

The operation of this form of the device is asfollows: When the lipstick is incarrying'conditiori, the various parts of the mechanism are in theposition shown in"Fig's. l,' 3 and '7. The user takes the'device inone hand andby means of pressurefrom 'her thumb. slides push-button 2|! upwardly to the top of slot 2 (or as far as desired). Link [6 is so held to the l eft'by studZ that'it'preve'nts pin 2| (see Fig. 3) from sliding iii'slo't 8 'of the'sleeve; Accordingly, tli'e sleeve 8 is moved upwardly in response to the initial upward movement of the push-button 20. Through the pin and slot connection between pin H and the slots in closure flanges I, I, the closure 5 is swung upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2. At this point recess IS in link l6 aligns with fixed stud 2 and permits the link Hi to swing on its pivot l1, and uncover the slot 8 in the sleeve 8. Accordingly, as the push-button is further moved upwardly, the pin 2| moves vertically in the slot 8 and sleeve 8 remains stationary. This further movement of the pushbutton 23 and pin 2| slides the cosmetic carrier l4 upwardly in sleeve 8 and projects the cosmetic for use, as shown in Fig. 2.

When it is desired to retract the stick of cosmetic into the casing, the push-button 29 is moved downwardly and pin 2| moves through the slot 8 in sleeve 8 until the pin 2| strikes cam surface 24 of link 16. The cosmetic carrier [4 and the cosmetic stick l5 have then been withdrawn'into sleeve 8. Pressure of the pin 2| on cam surface 23 rocks the link it to the left and continued downward movement of the push-button and pin 2i withdraw the sleeve 8 (and with it the carrier i l) until the parts have been returned to the initial position shown in Fig. 3. As the sleeve 8 is withdrawn into .the exterior casing the pin-and-slot connection between sleeve 8 and the closure 5 returns the closure to closed position shown in Fig. 1.

Reference will now be hadto Figs. 8 to 13 inclusive. Exterior casing 30, provided with base 3!, is'similar to the exterior casing in the first form of'the invention. Thereis also provided an' interior sleeve 32, cosmetic carrier 34, pivoted link 35, and fixed stud 36, all analogous to the corresponding parts in the first form of the invention. On the exterior of the casing there is a pushbutton 31 from which projectsa pin 33 that passes through vertical slots in the exterior casing andthe interior sleeve and engages the cosmetic carrier 34 as shown in Fig. 12. This pin 33 may serve as a stop to position the stick of cosmetic 38 as it is inserted into the carrier 34. The use of the push-button pin as a stop for the cosmetic may, of course, be used with the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to '7 as well as with the modified form shown in Figs. 8 to 13 inclusive.

' The principal difierence between" the modified form shown in Figs. 8 to 13 and the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7 resides in the construction of closure 39 for the exterior casing and the means for moving the closure to open and closed position. The closure 39 is pivoted at 40 to the exterior casing, and is provided with a lever or finger 4| adapted to cooperate with sleeve 32. As shown more especially in Figs. 10 to 13 inclusive, the sleeve 32 is provided with a rectangular aperture 44 of a width slightly greater than the width of lever finger M.

The device is operated by sliding push-button 3'! upwardly and downwardly in the manner described in connection with Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, and the sleeve 32 and cosmetic carrier 34 are reciprocated in the same manner as previously described. However, as sleeve 32 moves upwardly, the portion 45 moves out of engagement with lever finger All and permits closure 39 to be swung open by continued movement of the sleeve 32, thus bringing the parts into the position shown in Fig. I2, in which the cosmetic is projected for use. Closure 39 is provided with a detent 46 which strikes the edge of casing 30, as shown in Figs. 9 and 12, to limit the movement of closure 39.

When the cosmetic is to be withdrawn for carriage, push-button 31 is moved downwardly, drawing the carrier 34 and the stick of cosmetic 38 into the sleeve 32. Then continued movement of the push-button 3! withdraws the sleeve 32 into the exterior casing 30. As the sleeve 32 descends, cross portion 45 engages lever finger M and moves the closure 39 to closed position. The cross member 45 then moves across the end of lever finger 4|, as shown in Fig. 11, locking the closure 39 in closed position.

It is obvious that many changes may be made in the constructions disclosed without departing from the principles of the invention and hence the foregoing disclosure is merely illustrative in compliance with the patent statutes and is not to be considered as limiting.

I claim:

1. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior slotted casing; a slotted sleeve slidably mounted in said casing; a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve; 2. pin extending from said carrier through the slots in said sleeve and casing for advancing and retracting the carrier; a link pivoted to said sleeve, said link having a position in which it locks the sleeve to the pin during its initial movement in advancing the carrier, said pin during such initial movement exerting a force upon the link tending to swing it to a posi-- tion in which it releases its hold on the carrier pin; means to retain the link in looking engagement with the carrier'pin during the initial advance of the carrier and then release it to permit continued advance of the carrier free of the sleeve; and a cover for the casing opened in response to advancing movement of the sleeve.

2. A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior slotted casing; a slotted sleeve slidably mounted in said casing a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve; a pin extending from said carrier through the slots in said sleeve and casing for advancing and retracting the carrier; a link pivoted to said sleeve, said link having a position in which it looks the sleeve to the pin during its initial movement in advancing the carrier, said pin during such initial movement exerting a force upon the link tending to swing it to a position in which it releases its hold on the carrier pin; means to retain the link in locking engagement with the carrier pin during the initial advance of the carrier and then release it to permit continued advance of the carrier free of the sleeve,,said means comprising a stud fixed to said exterior casing and making sliding engagement with the link; and a cover for the casing opened in response to advancing movement of the sleeve.

A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior slotted casing; a slotted sleeve slidably mounted in said casing; a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve; a pin extending from said carrier through the slots in said sleeve and casing for advancing and retracting the carrier; a link pivoted to said sleeve, said link having a position in which it looks the sleeve to the pin during its initial movement in advancing the carrier, said pin during such initial movement exerting a force upon the link tending to swing it to a position in which it releases its hold on the carrier pin; means to retain the link in locking engagement with the carrier pin during the initial advance of the carrier and then release it to permit continued advance of the carrier free of the sleeve, said means operating when the link is released from locking engagement with the pin to hold the sleeve against further movement; and a cover for the casing opened in response to advancing movement of the sleeve.

A cosmetic holder comprising an exterior slotted casing; a slotted sleeve slidably mounted in said casing; a cosmetic carrier slidably mounted in said sleeve; a pin extending from said carrier through the slots in said sleeve and casing for advancing and retracting the carrier; a notched link pivoted to said sleeve, said link having a position in which it covers the slot in the sleeve and locks the sleeve to the pin during its initial movement in advancing the carrier, said pin during such initial movement exerting a force upon the link tending to swing it to a position in which it uncovers the slot in the sleeve and releases its hold on the carrier pin; means to retain the link in looking engagement with the carrier pin during the initial advance of the carrier and then release it to permit continued advance of the carrier free of the sleeve, said means comprising a stud fixed to the casing, the stud making sliding engagement with an edge of the link during the initial advance of the carrier and then engaging the notch in the link to lock the sleeve to the casing; and a cover opened and closed in response to advancing and retracting movement of the sleeve.

5. A cosmetic holder comprising: a casing; a

closure hinged to said casing, the closure being provided with'a detent which engages the end of the casing and limits opening movement of the closure, and the closure also being provided with an operating finger; a sleeve slidably mounted in said casing, the sleeve being provided with an elongated recess; a cosmetic carrier slidable in said sleeve; and means to reciprocate the sleeve in the casing and the carrier in the sleeve, the end of the sleeve engaging said closure and opening the same to the limit fixed by said detent, upon movement of the sleeve in one direction, and an edge portion of the recess engaging said finger and closing the closure upon movement of the sleeve in the opposite direction.

6. A cosmetic holder comprising: a casing; a closure hinged to said casing, the closure being provided with an operating finger; a sleeve slidably mounted in said casing, the sleeve being provided with a recess and a side wall adjacent to an edge of the recess; a cosmetic carrier slidable in said sleeve; and means to reciprocate the sleeve in the casing and the carrier in the sleeve, said edge of said recess engaging said finger and closing said closure when the sleeve is moved in one direction, and said side wall thereafter engaging said finger and locking the closure in closed position.
