By means of this arrangement, the guide. is readily and easily placed upon its support and held in the operative position by means of the loop. The longitudinal recess formed in the base of the guide is preferably of substantially the same cross section as the flattened portion 4 of the support arm so that a snug seat is provided when the liat portion is seated in the recess.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6 there is shown a mod iiied form of thread guide and support therefor, wherein the angular position. of the guide with respect to its support may be adjusted so that the tension. on the thread can. be varied. It will be noted in this arrangement that support member l is provided with a cylindrical end portion 2l and an intermediate iiat portion 4 between the plain cylindrical end 2| and threaded portion 3 of the support. The thread guide is of substantially the same conguration as the guide used in connection with support member shown in Figure 1; however, it differs therefrom in that the recess 22 formed longitudinally of the base of the guide is cylindrically shaped and adapted to receive the cylindrical end 2l of the support member. The guide isy further provided with a cylindrical shaped base having a plurality of grooves 23 formed exteriorly thereof and corresponding diametrically opposite grooves I2 across the end of the base portion, grooves I2 being adapted to receive section i6 of the loop when the guide member is mounted upon its support.
It will be appreciated that the transverse or diametrically opposite grooves l2 may be eliminated, since the guide can` be supported and held in the operative position on the support member by means of the engagement of the arms I1 and i8 of the loop with grooves 23 in which they are adapted to seat. By means of this arrangement, the angular position of the thread guide may be changed so as to vary the tension on the thread. As; in the arrangement shown in Figure 1, the guide is placed in the operative position by inserting it on the support member with the plain cylindrical end 2l in recess 22 formed in the base of the guide and permitting arms I1 and I3 to seat in a pair of grooves 273, ends I9 and 2B of the loop member being seated` in recesses l0 and Il formed at the ends of the grooves. In order to vary the tension on the thread, the position of the guide with respect to support member 3 is varied by rotating it so that a different pair of grooves 23 are brought into position to receive the arms of the looped member.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details: of construction herein set forth, by way of illustrations, as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:

In a thread guide device for winding machines, the combination of a support arm having a support engaging portion and a free end adapted to receive a guide eye, a looped member attached to the support arm in proximity to its free end, comprising a base portion and two arms extending outwardly therefrom terminating in free ends, the arms. and base portion being coplanar, a guide eye attached to the support arm comprising a base portion and a thread receiving portion, a recess longitudinally of the base portion forming a seat for the free end of the arm and grooves in the body portion to receive the arms of the loop. In a thread guide device for winding machines, the combination of a support arm having a support engaging portion and a free end adapted to receive a guide eye, a looped member attached to the support in proximity to its free end, comprising a base portion and two arms extending outwardly therefrom terminating in free ends, the arms and base portion of said looped member being co-planar, a guide eye attached to the support arm comprising a base portion and a thread receiving portion, the base portion of the guide being tapered and provided with grooves on opposite sides thereof to receive the arms of the loop and a recess longitudinally of the base portion forming a seat for the free end of the arm.

In a thread guide device for winding machines, the combination of a support arm having a threaded support engaging portion and a cylindrically shaped unthreaded free end adapted to receive a guide eye, a looped member threaded through an aperture formed in proximity to the end of the support arm comprising a base portion and two co-planar arms extending outwardly therefrom terminating in free ends, said arms being bent inwardly to form hook members, a guide eye attached to the support arm comprising a base portion and a thread receiving portion, a cylindrically shaped recess longitudinally of the base portion forming a seat for the free end of the arm and a plurality of diametrically opposite grooves in the body portion of the guide to receive the arms of the loop, each groove terminating in a recess at its end near the thread receiving portion of the guide to receive the hook members formed in the ends of the loop.
