COMBINED PLIERS AND SCREW DRIVER Filed July 16, 1935 Patented May 11, 1937 PATIENT OFFICE COMBINED PLIERS AND SCREW DRIVER Andrew G. Koon, Badlands, Calif.
Application July 16,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to screw drivers and more particularly to a screw driver construction combined with a pair of pliers to permit the loosening of screws or bolts which are relatively hard to 5 loosen or tighten.
An object of this invention is to provide a construction of this kind which is particularly adapted for use in tightening or loosening the bolts or screws used as pivots for shears or like instruments.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adjustable blade structure which is slidably mounted in one side of a plier construction in a position confronting the other side or jaw of the pliers.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in, and in part be understood from the following detail description of the present preferred'embodi- 2O ment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:--
Figure l is a detail side elevation of a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail plan view of the device.
Figure 3 is a detail front elevation of the device in applied position on a pair of scissors shown in fragmentary form.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation partly in longitudinal section showing the device in operative position.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals I and I I designate a pair of handles or levers which are mounted on a pivot I3. The handle or lever' ID has a jaw member I2 secured to the forward end thereof and the handle I I has a second jaw member I4 secured to the forward end thereof and in confronting position to the first jaw member In order to provide a means whereby the plier construction including the handles I0 and I I and the jaws I2 and I4 may be used to loosen or tighten screws, bolts or other like articles, I have provided a blade I5 having a stem I6 which is slidable through the jaw I2 adjacent the forward end of this jaw. The blade I5 is constructed after the manner of a screw driver blade and the inner side of the jaw I2 is provided with a pair of right angularly related recesses I! in a selected one of which the inner end of the blade I5 is adapted to engage. The stem I6 is threaded, as at I8, and a nut I9 engages the threads I8 so as to limit the 1935, Serial No. 31,667
sliding movement of the stem I6 through the jaw I2.
A spring 20 is secured, as by a bolt or screw 2|, to the outer side of the jaw I2 and is provided with a slot 22 in its forward end which loosely engages about the stem I6. This spring 20 engages against the outer side of the nut I9 and acts to constantly urge the blade I5 inwardly so that the blade I5 may be turned to permit engagement of the outer end thereof in a selected recess II.
In this manner, the jaws I2 may be pressed together by means of the handles I 0 and I I and the bolt 23 turned slightly and then the jaws I2 and I4 may be released to permit return of the clamping means to the original position with the blade I5 remaining stationary. It will be obvious that the device may be turned for a quarter turn each time or a greater turn if such is possible and the spring 20 will maintain the blade I5 in engagement with the kerf of the bolt 23.
This combined screw driver and pliers may, therefore, be used to loosen or tighten bolts or screws which are relatively hard to move, these bolts being of a type used for scissors or like instruments. The blade I5 by reason of the tight grip obtained. through the jaws I2 and I4 will not break the kerf in the screw or bolt 23. Preferably; the jaw I4 on its inner side is provided with a concave recess 24 in which the end of the bolt 23 projecting through the blades of the scissors 25 may engage.
In the use and operation of this device, the nut I9 is suitably adjusted so that the spring 20 will normally maintain the outer end of the blade I 5 out of engagement with the right angularly related recesses H which form the locking means to hold the blade I5 against turning. The blade I5 is then engaged with the kerf of the bolt 23 and then the handles I0 and I I swung one toward another so that the outer end of the blade I5 will engage in a selected recess or locking means H. The entire handle structure is then turned for a fragment of a turn with the blade I5 and the stem thereof as a fulcrum. When the handle structure is turned for a fragment of a turn, the handles I0 and Il may bereleased slightly so as to permit the spring I9 to move the blade I5 out of the previously engaged recess I I. The handles I0 and II may then be swung to their original position with the blade I5 remaining stationary. The bolt 23 may thus be either tightened or loosened, as may be desired, and a considerable degree of pressure may be applied to the blade I5 so that this blade will not slip out of the kerf of the bolt 23 and the bolt 23 may be tightened or nut to constantly urge the blade inwardly, said loosened as may be desired. one jaw having a recess in the inner face thereof I claim: to receive an end of the blade for holding the A device as set forth, comprising a pair of jaws, blade against rotation and said spring normally 5 a pair of pivoted handles secured to the jaws, a urging said blade out of said recess and said one 5 flat screw driver blade between the jaws, a rejaw having a recess on the face opposite from duced round stem secured to the blade, one of said first face in which said nut engages, said said jaws having an opening transversely therelatter recess being of a depth substantially equal through in which said stem is slidably and rotatto the thickness of the nut whereby said spring 10 ably mounted, said stem having a threaded outer will hold the nut in said latter recess when the 10 end portion, a nut threaded on to the stem for blade is in released position. I limiting the inward movement of the blade, a
spring having a stem receiving slot engaging the H ANDREW G. KOON.
