HIRAM TODD, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BURNING-FLUID LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM TODD, of the city of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fluid-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in surrounding the wick tubes with a water chamber, to the end of which is attached a safety valve and tube, surrounding entirely the wick and tubes, thereby preventing any heated metal, substance or fluid from coming into contact with the fluid in the main body of the lamp.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my hydraulic safety gas lamps with gas burners of various forms, so as to generate gas when heated.
The wick tube B is 3 and 5 inches in length and ths of an inch in diameter, with gas burner A attached to its top. I surround this tube by tube G which is three inches in length and ths of an inch in diameter. This tube should be made to fit tube B one-half inch from its bottom and there soldered fast. I then surround the tubes B and C with a cylinder or tube D which is 2% inches in length and {obs of an inch in diameter at the top and %%ths of an inch at the bottom. This cylinder should be made to fit the tube B th of an inch from its bottom. The tube E should be made to fit the bottom of cylinder D and one inch and one-quarter in length or should extend down nearly to the bottom of the bowl of the lamp. At the lower end of the tube E is the safety valve or hole f ths of an inch in diameter, with the end of tube made tunnel shaped to admit the ball (see letter E) which forms the safety valve. I then attach to the screw of the lamp (G) a tunnel (see drawing, letter H) which is one inch and one-eighth in diameter at the top, with a hole in the bottom one-half inch in diameter corresponding with hole in screw G where it should be soldered fast.
To adjust the tubes and cylinder and safety valves I first solder the cylinder to the bottom of the screw. I then force the tubes B and C down through this tunnel the screw and through the bottom of cylinder one-eighth of an inch and then solder them fast. I then proceed to wick the tube (I) which is th of an inch in diameter and 4 inches long, and made of brass formed around a wire without soldering with slits cut in the ends to form little horns to hold the wick which is wound on to the tube,-
without crossing the hole through its center until it will fill the cavity in wick tube B; it is then inserted to the upper end of tube. I then take the safety tube E and place in the ball F and slide it onto the cylinder D which entirely surrounds the wick and tubes at the bottom.
By the arrangement of the water chamber I surround the tube B with Water at J to keep the lower end of tube B cool, while the upper end becomes hot, thereby generating gas; and not to apply water to the wick so that the light is extinguished as claimed by Isaac Van Bunschoten in his patent of March 2d, 1852, for an improvement in camphene lamps.
The safety valve and tube protects the fluid in the bowl of the lamp from the tubes B and I and wick, and at the same time prevents the fiame from going out when the lamp is carried about.
The tubes B and O should be made of brass and hard soldered; the burners of silver. The tunnel H should be made of brass, but the cylinder D and safety tube E may be made of tin, and the ball F of lead.
My water chambers and safety tubes and burners are varied in size to suit the various places where needed, but always keeping the same proportions as above specified.
I do not claim the application of a water chamber around the Wick tubes of lamps, to apply water to the Wick to extinguish the light, or any such device; but
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the water chamber D with the tubes B and C and Wick tube I constructed and operating as, and for the purposes set forth.
2. I also claim the arrangement of the safety valve F and tube E with the wick tube I in the manner and for the purposes specified.
