Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,726, dated June 29, 1858.

Myinvention relates to such an arrangement of devices, that the low state of the water in the boiler, is accurately indicated, thus showing the point to which it may fall vwith safety, the instrument being so adjusted that it will give an alarm, by the sounding of a whistle, if the water falls below this point.
The instrument consists of a steam whistle of the usual form of construction, and is inserted into a boiler above high water mark, and so arranged in relation to its valve, that the steam is allowed to escape, as soon as the water falls below the point of safety.
A, A, represents the whistle. This is connected with a screw bolt B, which is inserted through the end of the boiler above high water mark. The flange C, and gasket C', it the inside of the boiler, to which they are closely drawn by the nut D, upon the outside. The valve seat E, projects inward from the flange C.
The valve is seen at F, the stem F, of which extends along the interior bore of the screw bolt B. v
From the bottom of the valve seat, two pieces extend in a horizontal direction seen at G, G, which pieces form a fulcrum of the lever that operates the valve. This lever H, is placed between the two project-ions G, Gr, and works upon the fulcrum pin I; the upper end of this lever seen at H', has a slot extending in a vertical direction, through which the valve stem F', passes, and is secured upon the outside of the lever H, by a nut K. The lever H, occupies nearly a' vertical position and consequently has considerable play toward the valve seat;
in other words, the upper end may move toward the valve, in the direction of the arrow., without in any way acting upon the valve. furnished ,with a slot through which a fulcrum pin L, passes. This pin forms the fulcrum of the long lever seen in Fig. 2, and when these levers are combined, they form a compound jointed lever H, M, N.
The head of the section N, seen at M, Figs. 1 and 2, is so formed that the arm N, to the extremity of which is attached the float O, may pass through a space of several inches upward, from the line of safety for the water, without in any way affecting the whistle valve; but if the float O sinks belowl the line of safety for the water, the arm N being properly adjusted therefor, by being bent into the proper angle, the two surfaces a, e, Fig. l, will be brought into Contact, and consequently, the upper end of the lever, H, will be carriedoutwafrd, and the steam valve opened by the action of the lever, upon the nut K, and in this manner the valve F, will be kept open, allowing the steam to escape through thewhistle, and thus continually sounding the alarm, until the boiler is properly replenished .with water.
By allowing the stem of the whistle valve to pass outward through the base A, of the whistle, I form a very convenient try cock for the water, by which arrangement I am also enabled to try the whistle at any moment, for the purpose of determining whether it is in proper order. The alarm can be placed exactly at high water mark, and in this manner used as the upper gage cock, or, the valve stem may be operated upon by a thumb screw passing through the base of the whistle, upon a line with the valve stem, as seen at I), Fig. l, and in this manner all the steam that issues by opening the valve, will pass through the whistle.
I am aware that, a steam whistle has been so combined with a valve and with a float,` that when the water in the boiler becomes low the descent of the lioat will operate the valve and allow steam togescape to the whistle and give alarm, and it is upon this combination that my improvement bears; but I do not claim to have invented the combination nor the means or devices, irrespective The lower end of the leverH, isl
