Description

March 2, 1937. J. JACOBS k GARMENT SUPPORTER Filed March 2l, 1936 m m E V m ATTORNEY.

Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in garment supporters and the method of making the same and has particular reference to that type of supporter wherein a metallic loop member coop- 5 crates with a button in securing a garment, suchl asa stocking, thereto.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved supporter of simple, durable and practical construction in which the button and its supporting strip, by means of which the former is connected to the loop member, are assembled in such manner that their accidental detachment will be effectively avoided.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with th'e accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a front elevation of a supporter constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the loop member and supporting strip before attachment of the button to the latter.
Figure 4 is a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the button.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 6 indicates a metallic loop member which may be of any conventio-nal type utilized in garment or h'ose supporters and which, in the present instance, is shown as being associated with an auxiliary loop member 'I connected to the member 6 by a link 8, the member 'I being utilized to attach the loop member to a fabric strip depending from a corset or girdle.
A button 9 is associated with the loop member ii for attaching a stocking to the restricted end of the latter in the customary manner and this button is preferably made of rubber or an elastic compound which is molded to form the head of the button and a base portion I0 of larger dimensions than said h'ead.
The button 9 is carried by a flexible supporting strip II made of webbing or any other suitable fabric and is vulcanized to the lower end of said strip after the latter has been looped, intermediate its ends, about the link Il of the loop member Il. In thus vulcanizing the button 9 to said strip the material of the latter is impregnated by the rubber of the button and as a consequence a binding action is effected between the two elements to securely unite the same.
In accordance with the present invention, after the strip l has been looped about the link 8 one of the free extremities of said strip is extended beyond the other to provide a tab I2. A transverse row of stitching I3 is then utilized to secure the two portions of the strip II together, said stitching extending across said portions contiguous to the shorter end of the strip and consequently spaced a considerable distance from the free end of the tab I2. By thus disposing the ends of the strip, a tab I2 presents a single ply of material to which a major portion of the base I0 of the button 9 is aiixed thus rendering the assembly less bulky at this point than if the two ends of said strip were aligned. After the stitchi operation has been performed the button 9 is applied to the supporting strip and the dimension of the base Il] is such that when it is laid upon the tab- I2 it completely covers the same and extends in overlapping relation to the shorter end of said strip II and to the line of stitching formed thereacross. The base of the button is thereupon vulcanized to the strip in the customary manner, the result being that said button will be securely affixed to surfaces of both end portions of the strip with said portions secured together by a line of stitching which will adequately reenforce the structure against any strains which might otherwise cause a separation of the button from the strip, such stitching also minimizing the possibility of separation of the two end portions of said strip.
What is claimed is:
l. In a supporter of the button and loop type, a loop member, a supporting strip'looped intermediate its ends about a part of said member and having its free ends lapped with the lower end extending beyond the upper end to form a stepped lap, and a rubber button vulcanized to the surfaces of the lower and upper steps, the base of said button being deformed to conform to the rise in the stepped lap.
2. In a supporter of the button and loop type, a loop member, a supporting strip, having a lower layer and upper layer, looped intermediate its ends about a part of said member, the free extremity of said upper layer being lapped atwise against the upper surface of said lower member, and said lower member extending flatwise to its extremity, a rubber button vulcanized to said upper and lower layers, the base of said button extending from said extremity of said lower layer to a line between said extremity of the upper layer and said loop member, the base of said button conforming to the stepped section between said upper and lower layers.
3. In a supporter of the button and loop type, a loop member, a supporting strip looped intermediate its ends about a part of said member and having its free ends lapped with the lower end extending beyond the upper` end to form a stepped lap, and a rubber button vulcanized only and directly to the upper surfaces of the lower and upper steps, the base of said button being shaped to conform to the rise in the stepped lap.
4. A button tab for hose supporters comprising a tape doubled upon itself at its intermediate portion, the end of the lower ply of said doubled tape projecting beyond the .end of the upper ply thereof to leave a portion of the upper surface of the lower ply exposed, a. rubber button having a base, a head and a reduced neck joining the base and head, the base of said button being vulcanized upon the end portion of the upper ply and the exposed end portion of the lower ply, and said button neck being spaced at a substantial distance back from thev lower front end edge of the button base.
5. A button tab for hose supporters or the like comprising a tape doubled upon itself at an intermediate portion, the ends of said tape being arranged in longitudinally stepped relation so as to expose a substantial part of the upper surface of the lower ply of said doubled tape, a line of stitching joining said plies adjacent the end of the upper ply, a rubber button having a base, a head, and a reduced neck joining the base and head, the base of said button being vulcanized upon the exposed upper surface of the lower ply, and also upon the upper surface of the lower end portion of the upper ply, and covering said line of stitching, and said button neck being spaced back a substantial distance from the lower front edge of the button base.
