G. W. JOHNSON PRESSING MACHINE AND BUCK Filed July 18, 1934 I GEORGE WVEIE-ICFGIEON I 22:21
' rear. 1;
AND BUCK George W. Johnson, Gincinnati, M0, assignor to The dmerioan Laundry Machinery (Company, Nor-wood, Ohio. a corporation of Ohio Application my 18, 1934, Serial No. team 13 Claims.
' lhisinve'ntion relates to a pressing machine of the type use in laundry and garment work and particularly to a machine adapted to cause a pressing eflect simultaneously in two directions,
that is to say, one pressing eflfect generally in a plane and a side pressing effect at an angle to said plane.
7 One object of the invention is to provide novel means for pressing garments of the general type pressing the front or back of a shirt body and simultaneously to press a portion of the side of the bodyso that the entire body of the shirt may be pressed in two lays.
A more speciflc object of the present invention is to provide a pair of cooperating pressing members each having acentral portion and depending side portions, means for causing relative approach between the members so that the central portionsof the members are in pressure engage-- ment while the depending side portions are in position to coact and following which, pressure between the coacting central portions causes movement of the side portions into pressure engagemerlt.
Another feature of the present invention is the provision of a pressing member'mounted on a support, said member having a central pressing portion and side portions adapted to 'move laterally relative to the central portion, there being a yieldable connection between the member and its support and means for moving the side portions laterally into pressing coaction with another member by movement of the first member towards its support.
Another feature of this invention is the provision of an-elongated pressing bed or buck having a substantially flat central portion and v depending side portions having a hinged connection with the central portion. I
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear, including the provision of power means for the operation of a pressing machine of the above described type, one embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partn of men's shirts, wherein provision is made for press of the scissors type comprising a frame in on which is mounted a pedestal H carrying a pressing buck or bed indicated generally at H. An upstanding bracket i3 on the frame pivotally supports a head lever N which carries a head or 5 chest i5 adapted to coact with the bed and which may be provided with heating means as desired. The head is movable toward and from the bed by means of toggles i6 and I1 extending between the frame i0 and the rear end of the head lever and 1 movable toward straightened position by a cylinder and piston motor i8. For illustrative purposes only I have shown. a cylinder l9 pivotally mounted on trunnions 20 and provided with a piston 2! having an operative connection by 15 means of piston rod 22 with the toggle mechanism. a
Suitable control means is provided for supplying fluid under pressure to the motor l8, that illustrated comprising a two-hand control mechanism wherein valve casing 23 encloses a normally closed inlet valve 24 and valve casing 25 encloses a normally closed intake valve 26 and a normally open exhaust valve 21, the valves 26 and 21 being mounted on a common stem for joint operation. Control members 28-and 29 are provided ior actuation of the valves in casings 23 and 25 respectively. The supply of pressure fluid is by way of conduit 30, valve 24, conduit 8!, valve 28 and conduit 32 to the forward end of cylinder 30 i9. Both control members must be depressed to provide a fluid flow and the depression of control member 29 will close exhaust valve 21 at the same time as intake valve 26 is opened, all as will be readily understood, as such arrangement is old in the art. Upon the supply of pressure fluid to motor 08, the piston moves rearwardly thus straightening the toggle mechanism and causing relative approach between the head and bed members. As the pressing members reach closed 49 position, the piston uncovers a port 33 in the cylinder'which communicates by way of conduit M with fluid, pressure actuated holding means 35 and 36 located in valve casings 23 and 25 respectively, 4 and operable upon the supply of pressure fluid 45 thereto to maintain the control members in their operated position, whereupon the operator may" release the control members. Upon completion of the pressing operation the operator raises control member 29 against the pressure of holding means 36, thus permitting the return of exhaust valve 21 to its normally open position which exhausts the fluid from motor I8, whereupon a spring 31 connected between the rear end of the 40 connected at it with the bed support ii.
results from this construction that when the he'adleverandtheframewillreturnthememhere to open position.
This invention provides a pair of coasting pressing. members suitable for pressing the body .5 of a mans shirt and therefore of the elongated type familiar to the art and provided with central pressing portions and depending sideportions .of lesser area than the central portion and adapted to press certain of the side portions of a shirt simultaneously with the pressing action between the central portions. In accordance with my present invention, I provide a unitary memher, in the present case the head member, with a central portion 38 and depending side portions 88 extending at an angle to .the general plane of v the central portion thereof. The coactin'gbed member is provided with. a central portion 4] mounted on the pedestal or support ii with pro.-
vision for relative motion-therebetween and biased away from the support, as for instance by means of spring ll. Depending side portions 42 are provided on the bed having hinge or pivoted connections 43 with the central portion. Preferably a common cover means is provided for the central and side portions of the bed which, as illustrated, comprises spring padding and a cover'cloth 4!, although it will be well understood that'other cover means is within the scope of my invention.
Means is provided for utilizing the'pressure be- ,24) tween the central portions of the pressing members when they are once brought into pressure engagement for moving the side portions of the bed into pressing engagement with the coacting side portions of the head. The specific means ,85 illustrated comprises links 46 pivotally' connected at 41 with the side pressing portions of the bed and extending toward the support and inclineddownwardly when the bed side portionsare in their retracted position. These links are pivotally It yieldable connection between the bed and its support is taken up by the pressure engagement between the head and bed, the links 46 move toward straightened position, as illustrated in broken lines in Fig. 2, thus causing the depending side pressing portions 42 of the bed to move into pressure engagement with the coacting side portions ll of the head. Upon release of the pressure fluid from motor it as the parts of the press move toward open position, the first movement is a separation of the bed I! from its support ii caused by the spring H which releases the pressure between the side pressing portions, where- 55 upon further movement of the pressing members completely opens the press.
With the parts in the position of Fig. 2, it will be noted that the greater the pressure between the central portions, the greater is the pressurebetween the sideportions, due to the lateral movement of points 41.
