O. W. BLAKESLEE. Snap-Hook.
No. 206,657. Patented Aug. 6.1878.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH H. HOPKINS AND LE OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,657. dated August 6, 187?; application filed March 20, 187R.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BLAKES- LEE, of Northfield, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements pertaining to Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side view of a snap-hook embodying my improvement, with a part of the side of the hook-body represented as broken away at the pivot-point to expose the pivot. Fig. 2 is a view of the snap-hook, in cross-seetion, on the plane denoted by the dotted line a a'. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the bottom or under side of the tongue.
The invention consists, mainly, in the peculianconstruction of the tongue.
The letter (t denotes the body of the hook,
I), the tongue, pivoted in and to the body; 0, the strap-loop; d, the spring, and e the pivotpin.
The tongue b has at its rear end the recess 1; for the reception of the spring. One side of this recess is formed by the ear I). The other side of the recess has no corresponding ear, but is open on that side for the reception of the spring.
From the inner face of the ear a sleeve, 11 extends toward the opposite side of the tongue, and the pivot-pin runs through this sleeve. This sleeve serves to maintain the tongue in its proper position on the pivot-pin, (a function hitherto performed by two side ears,) and serves as a post, around which the helical spring is coiled.
I suggest, as a modification, that the one ear I) can come down centrally of the recess b and have a sleeve, b on each side, the spring being changed in shape to conform thereto.
I claim as my invention The snap-hook tongue b, having the one ear I) and the sleeve b, in combination with the hook-body a and the spring cl, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES W. BLAKESLEE.
