Description

Dec. 29, 1936. H. LINGARD DEEP HAIR WAVING DEVICE Filed April 3, 1934 m w m m Patented Dec. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PAT? 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hair wavers designed to be worn by the user, and its leading object is to provide a hair waver having a thin wire-like rod insertable in the hair of the user, and a looped frame hinged thereto, which is adapted to cooperate with the rod to form the wave, together with means for arching the rod within the looped frame, so as to displace the hair between the two, and form a relatively deep wave.
Another object of the invention is to provide a waver for the hair of women, wherein one of the wave forming jaws or members is formed with a hair retaining loop, and the other member is adapted to be displaced within the loop, so
as to form a deep hair waving crease in the hair, the two members being connected to each other by a hinge lever device, by means of which the user may displace the loop receiving member, by a one hand operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the drawing accompanying; in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the waving device applied to the head of the user.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View on an enlarged scale showing the device opened.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof showing the device closed.
Fig. 4 is a detailed side elevation enlarged, shown partly in section.
Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the displaceable rod.
Referring to the drawing accompanying herewith, 5 designates a wire-like rod or compressor frame member, which is arched to conform to the shape of the average human head. This member or flexible wire rod is formed with a lateral loop 6, which forms a hair stop for limiting the sliding movement of the hair against the rod, when the same is inserted under the hair of the user. The adjacent end portion 1 of the rod is then extended at approximately right angles to the direction of the member 5, and is then formed to provide a T-shaped terminal 8.
The flexible rod 5 is rigidly clamped to the sheet metal lever handle 9, by means of the S- shaped terminal l8 thereof. The T-shaped end 8 of the wire rod 5 is inserted in the loop 100, of said terminal l0, which is closed tightly upon the same, so that the lever handle will not move.
The other loop ill?) of the lever handle receives the cross bar I! of the looped frame link i2, so that the latter will hinge freely in said loop Iflb. This frame includes the side bars l3 and M, which are formed with opposing eyes l5 and [6, which receive the end cross bar Ila of the hair loop receiving frame or waving jaw ll. This frame or jaw includes the side bars l8 and i9, which are arched in approximately the same curvature as the flexible rod 5. The ends of the bars I8 and iii are connected to each other by the cross bar 2t, and the ends of the small connecting frame l2 are connected by the cross bar 42a.
The frame or jaw ll carries on its outer end a terminal retaining element M, which consists of a U-shaped sheet metal part folded upon the cross bar 20 and clinched thereto, and provided with a small pocket the mouth of which faces the'hinged end of the frame or jaw.
The frame or jaw I? is hinged on the connecting frame l2, which is, also hinged to the lever handle 9, the latter being rigidly connected to the flexible jaw or bar 5, in the manner previously explained. I
In using the device the flexible rod or bar 5 is pushed under the hair until the hair engages the stop 6. Then the jaw frame H is swung over and the offset terminal 5a of the rod 5 is pushed into the pocket of the retaining element 2|. When this is done the lever handle 9 will occupy an angular position with reference to the frame l2. When the frame H is swung over and against the hair, to be coupled to the end of the bar 5, the hair will be clamped between the two jaws, 5 and I1. By pressing the lever handle 9 toward the frame l2, which also acts as a lever, the S-shaped end of the lever handle will be swung under the frame [1, thereby increasing the arch of the bar 5, which will force the hair between the side bars l8 and N3 of the jaw frame ll, consequently increasing the pres sure of the waver upon the hair, and forming at the same time a deeper hair wave.
Having described my invention I claim as new:-
1. A hair waving device consisting of an elongated frame comprising side bars and connecting end bars providing a hair receiving space between said side bars, a lever member pivotally connected to one of said end bars and provided with an inwardly extending portion, a link member pivotally connecting with said inwardly extending portion, and a compressor frame connecting with said link member and having a terone of the end bars of the frame is pivotally connected, a lever pivotally mounted on said link frame, and a compressor bar rigidly connected.
with said lever and adapted to swing between the side bars of the first frame, said compressor bar having latching engagement with said first frame.
3. The construction set forth in claim 2, the compressor bar having an outstanding hair stop formed thereon to limit sliding of hair.
