This invention relates to foundation girdles, and more particularly to girdles of elastic material adapted to conform to and exert a confining and supporting effect on certain parts of the figure of the wearer.

The main object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat and inexpensive girdle that can be readily varied in vertical length to meet different size requirements, the construction of the garment being such as to reinforce the parts thereof that encircle the waist, abdomen and hips of the wearer; that the garment can be longitudinally adjusted to compensate for shrinkage, as occasion may require, and that the curling of the top of the waist portion of the gar- 15 ment, while in service, is obviated.

Accordingly my invention comprises features of novelty, which in a preferred form will be hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a form-fitting girdle comprising an elongated tubular web 6 (Fig. 1) of suitable dimensions for its intended purpose, which web is composed of elastic and inelastic yarns, either knitted or woven in any usual or approved way. The upper portion of the tube is extended, as indicated at 1, well above the normal waist portion of the girdle, which portion, in the production of the garment, is folded inwardly and downwardly, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to lie in close lateral relation to the waist encircling portion 8 and to the adjacent abdomen and hip encircling portions of the garment; thus not only enabling the effective length of the garment to be varied at will to meet different size requirements and to compensate for shrinkage of the material, but also effectually reinforcing and strengthening the garment in a manner to en- 45 sure increased body support and form control without affecting the normal elasticity of the lower portion of the garment.

Sewed or otherwise fastened to the lower or free edge of the inner folded portion l are spaced pendant tapes 9 preferably of inelastic material, which tapes are looped at their lower ends and adjustably connected to the lower edge of the tube. The tapes are lengthwise adjustable to regulate the depth of the inner fold portion 55 1 and thus vary the length of the garment, as

desired. In the present instance the lower portions of the tapes are looped through links l0 of elastic connectors Il each of which connectors is sewed or otherwise secured to the lower edge of the elastic girdle body E, and each of which tapes has thereon a clasp or buckle l2 by means of which the tape can be shortened or lengthened at will and then secured in its position of adjustment. To the elastic connectors H are linked suitable anchoring means comprising, in the present instance, suspension stud fasteners I3 adap-ted to be engaged with the tops of the stockings of the wearer of the garment, which fasteners when thus engaged not only support the stockings but also yieldingly tension the connectors, the lower portion of the garment and the tapes 8 thus preventing upward displacement of the girdle and maintaining the inner fold 'l thereof in its position of adjustment in relation to the waist of the wearer, and obviating all liability of the heretofore objectionable outward curling of the margin of the waist portion of the garment.

t is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the particular structural details herein disclosed, as the garment may be modified within the principle of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.

I claim- 1. A girdle of the kind described embodying an elastic body having at its upper end a downwardly foldable Waist extension which provides a vertically adjustable reinforcing portion, and adjustable connecting members between the said reinforcing portion and the lower part of the said body, whereby the effective depth of the inner fold and the vertical length of the garment can be varied at will.

A girdle of the kind described embodying an elastic body having at its upper end a downwardly foldable waist extension which provides a vertically adjustable reinforcing portion, adjustable connecting members between the said reinforcing portion and the lower part of the said body, whereby the effective depth of the inner fold and the' Vertical length of the garment can be varied at will, and anchoring means depending from said connecting members.

3. A girdle of the kind described embodying an elastic body having at its upper end a downwardly foldable waist extension which provides a vertically adjustable reinforcing portion, spaced vertically adjustable tapes depending from said reinforcing portion, elastic connections between said tapes and the lower part of said body, and anchoring means depending from said connections.
