Description
1936 w. c. HIERING METHOD OF ASSEMBLING HANDBAG FRAMES Filed Dec. 7, l934 INVENTOZR? I I ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 10, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRAME William C. Hiering, Newark, N. J., assignor to J. E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application December 7, 1934, Serial No. 756,429
1 Claim.
This invention relates to hand bags, and more particularly to improvements in frames used in such bags.
Many hand bags for ladies are provided with a frame to which is attached the outer covering for the bag; and also attached to said frame is a smaller frame to which is attached a covering for a small pocketbook contained within the main bag.
The general structure above describedis wellknown and common in hand bags.
Heretofore it has been customary when bag frames of the type above referred to were sent to the bag manufacturers, the inner small pocketbook frame was permanently secured to the outer bag frame members, and it was compulsory for the bag manufacturer to cover the two frames with bag covering material in the assembled condition, and it was while securing the bag covering material to the small frame for the pocketbook, that the large frames became marred or damaged.
It is an object of this invention to provide a method of assembling and maintaining alined the hinge members of a hand bag frame and the hinge members of a pocketbook frame on pivot pins without distorting the frame members.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hand bag frame having attached thereto a pocketbook frame by means of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an improved type of pin employed by me in securing a pocketbook frame to a main bag frame, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing details of the structure for securing a pocketbook frame to a main hand bag frame, the dotted lines indicating parts of a tool used in the securing operation.
Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 there is shown a main bag frame 4 and a small pocketbook frame 5, both of said frames being substantially U-shaped and having their hinged members 6 and 1 respectively secured by means of a pivot pin 8. The pivot pin 8, see Fig. 2, has projecting from each end thereof reduced portions 9 and H] which respectively pivotally support the hinge members 6 and I. The ends of the portions 9 and in are provided with cavities H.
In assembling a pocketbook frame and a main bag frame, the portion 9 of the hinge pin is inserted through the hinge members 6 after which the hinge members 1 of the pocketbook frame 5 are mounted on the portion In of the pin 8. The pocketbook frame 5 and the main bag frame 4 are first covered with bag covering material before the frames are attached to each other.
After the pin 8 has been inserted in the hinge members 6 and 1 as above described, a tool l2 indicated by dotted lines in the drawing, is inserted into the cavities II in the ends of portions 9 and ID of the pivot pin 8, and upsets the metal of the pin surrounding said cavity to provide flanges l3 which prevent the pin from being withdrawn from the hinge members 6 and I, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that when the bag frame members are first covered with bag covering material and are then secured together by means of my improved pin, as above described, the possibility of marring or damaging the frame members is entirely obviated, and at the same time, my expedient provides an effective and simple means for permanently securing a pocketbook frame to a main hand bag frame.
The foregoing-disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which many embodiments may be constructed including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is:
The method of assembling and maintaining aligned the hinge members of a main hand bag frame to the hinge members of a pocketbook frame on pivot pins without distorting the frame member, comprising forming pivot pins with reduced portions at each end thereof adapted to pass through hinge members, forming conical cavities in the free ends of said pins, assembling hinge members on said pivot pins, and simultaneously upsetting the metal surrounding the cavities in the ends of the pivot pins to provide flanges to prevent the withdrawal of the pivot pins from the hinge members.
WILLIAM C. HIERING.
