son to drink the contents thereof without the lips touching the bottle. In the usual method of dispensing soft drinks or other liquid sold in the bottle for consumption at the place of sale,
it frequently happens that individual glasses or containers are not supplied andthe purchaser must drink directly fronr the bottle. Suchbottles are seldom sanitary and thus there is always present the danger of the purchaser contracting a disease. The present invention will eliminate this danger due to the fact that no part of the neck or mouth of the bottle will be exposed to or in direct contact with the lips of the purchaser. Another object of the invention is the provision of a mouthpiece which can be cheaply and readily made, and which because o f such cheapness can be discarded, after it has been once used.' Due to the extreme `cheapness of this construction, the manufacturer or retailer need add no additional chargefto his product.'
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a mouthpiece constructed of liquidproof or liquid-repellant material such as wax paper or other treated vpaper or fabric which isv substantially rigid and remains so during the period that the .contents of thebottle are being consumed.
Yet another object of the invention is the pror vision of a novel drinking or dispensingmouth- 40 piece, and in the shape and contour thereof which greatly facilitates drinking or pouring of the contents of the bottle. If desired, the novel mouthpiece may be provided with advertising matter thereby adding to or enhancing the value of the product to the manufacturer and/or retailer.,
. Further objects o'f theinvention are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, eiliciency,
economy and ease of assembly and operation, andsuchfurther objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby.
The invention further resides inthe combination, constructiony and arrangements ,of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing. and
while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, itis to be understood that the same' is susceptible of modification and change, and cornprehends other details and constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention. 5
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view, part in front elevation and part in vertical cross section of the novel mouthpiece as applied to a bottle.
Fig'. 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation thereof. 10
Fig. 3.is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. l but disclosing an alternate construction. I
, Fig'. 5 is a view in side elevation of the embodiment shown in Fig. 4. i 15 Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing a further alternate construction.
Fig. 'I is a fragmentary view part in side elevation and part in vertical cross section of an embodiment similar to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 as applied to 20 a milk bottle and provided with a flap or closure.
The present novel sanitary mouthpiece as embodied in Figs. vl, 2 and 3, comprises a member I k constructed of some liquid-proof or liquid-re- 4 pellant material such as wax paper, or other fab- 25 ric or material suitable for the purpose. Adjacent one end thereof the member is crimped or indented as at 2 to provide a shoulder or abutment 3,' and the end thereof is formed as an annular corrugation or bead 4 having its outer or 30 lower edge rolled'as at 5. The opposite end of the member is formed with a slanted opening 6 providing an outlet for the contents of the bottle. said opening having a straight edge joined by a curved edge. `Throughout a considerable portion 35 bi its length the member tapers as at 1 whereby to provide a flat lip, the outer extremity of which constitutes the straight edge of said opening 6. The edge formed by said ap lip projects beyond the plane of the curved edge of the opening 6in 40 such manner that while the bottle is held in drinking position, the said slanted opening will i provide clearance for the drinkers lips, i. e. the fiatside will contact with the lower lip of the drinker and the curved edge will provide clear- 45 anceV for his upper lip. yDue to this tapering, the mouthpiece is shaped to ilt the mouth of the consumer and permits drinking in the same manner as drinking from a glass, thus eliminating the necessity of tilting the head back as is done when 50 drinking direct from a bottle.
When the mouthpiece is slipped over the bottle 8, the bead l will encompass the upper bead 9 on the bottle and the shoulder 3 will abut the edge I 0 of the neck of the bottle and thus limit and 55 position the mouthpiece in place. The attachment is very simple and readily accomplished;
In Figs. 4 and 5 is disclosed an alternate construction of mouthpiece II in which the'outlet or opening 6 and tapered portion 'Ia is quite similar to that disclosed in Fig.. 1, although the contour of the body portion differs slightly over the prior form. In this embodiment, the lower end of the member is crimped as at I2 and this crimped portion seats below the bead 9 on the bottle.
In Fig. 6 is shown a further alternate constructionv in which the body of the member II is similar to that disclosed in Fig. 4 with the exception that it is provided with a double crimped portion as at I3, Il, with an intermediate bead I5 adapted to seat on the upper or lower bead oi' the bottle where it is provided with a pair'of beads. This form also provides additional contact area between the mouthpiece and bottle whereby to prevent its ready displacement.
In Fig. 7 is disclosed a form similar to that shown in Fig. 1 as applicable for attachment to a milk bottle I6 in which the member I'I is provided with a crimped portion I8 'and at its one end with a bead I9 having a 'rolled edge 20,*the bead being adapted to receive the bead or rim 2| on the bottle. At its opposite end, the mouthpiece is provided with a tapered lip 22 leading to a slanted opening or outlet 23 adapted to be closed by a ap or closure 24. In this formtheoutlet is disposed opposlte to that in the remaining views to permit easy pouring of the contents. It is to bel understood that any of the structures shown could be provided with such a closure if desired. 'I'his form would be extremely practical as a spout and closure for milk bottles or other liquid containers. e
From the above it will be clearly seen that the invention comprises a novel andipractical construction of sanitary mouthpiece for bottles, one which can be made very cheaply and easily applied to various forms of bottles, and' which per-- mits easy drinking from a bottle' without danger of infection.
Having thus I claim:
1; A sanitary mouthpiece for temporarily facilitating drinking from a bottle which is provided with a bead contiguous to its mouth, said mouthpiece consisting of a tubular body of liquidproof material having an open base at one end provided with a crimped portion complemental to said bead' for anchoring the mouthpiece in place, said body having a slanted opening at the other end' thereof, said opening having a straight edge joined by a curved edge, one side of said body being flat and tapered in such manner that the outer extremity thereof constitutes the straight edge of the opening and projects beyond the curved edge thereof, said tapered side and the edges of said opening being so constructed and arranged that while the bottle is in drinking position, the slanted opening in said mouthpiece provides clearance for the lips of the drinker, and the edge of said ilat side of the body will contact with his lower lip.
disclosed the invention,
2. A sanitary mouthpiece for temporarily fa-` cilitating drinking from a bottle which is provided with a bead contiguous to its mouth, said mouthpiece consisting-of a tubular body of liquid-proof brous material having an open base at one end provided with a crimped portion complemental to said base and anchoring the mouthpiece in placersaid body being indented so as to overlie the edge of the bottle mouth, said body also having a slanted outlet opening at the other end thereof, saidopening having a straight edge joined by a curved edge, one side of said body being ilat and tapered in such manner that the outer extremity thereof constitutes the straight edge c! the opening and projects beyond the curved edge of y said opening, said tapered side and the edges of said opening being so constructed and arranged that whilethe bottle is in drinking position the slanted opening in said mouthpiece provides clearance for the lips ofthe drinker, and the edge of said Aflat sideoi' the *body will contact with his lower lip.
