UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ROBERT S. OLIVER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVEN-SHELVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 205,894, dated July 9, 1878; application filed April 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. OLIVER, of the city of Albany, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oven-Shelves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of cooking-stove having the oven-door open and the oven'shelf in proper position for use. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the oven-shelf A and projecting lip B.
Upon the lip B is an inclined or beveled surface, 0, that co-operates with the hook G, attached to the oven-door A.
My invention relates to oven shelves for cooking-stoves and ranges; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices designed to constitute an improved oven-shelf which shall be less liable to injury and more conveniently disposed of when not in use.
The letter A of the drawing designates the shelf. A is the oven-door. B is a lip, projectin g from the shelf A, and has upon its under side a beveled surface, 0, Fig. 2. O is a hook, projecting downward and forward from the oven-door. X X are hinges or bearings, upon which the shelf swings and is supported. The dotted lines represent the position of the shelf when not in use.
To operate the shelf the oven-door is opened, when the downward and forward projecting hook O engages with the beveled surface on the projecting lip B of the shelf A, and raises the shelf to its proper horizontal position. By closing the door the shelf swings down and assumes a perpendicular position beneath the oven-door, as shown in dotted lines.
Oven-shelves as heretofore constructed have been hinged or pivoted to the oven-plates, thereby decreasing the capacity of the oven in amount equal to the diameter of the pivots and thickness of the shelf, also destroying the advantage there may be in the space made by swelling the oven-door. Another system employed is to sustain the shelf in a horizontal position upon the front or side of the stove, raising and lowering it horizontally by openin g and closing the oven-door. This construction is defective, in so far as being a hinderance to approaching the stove at the most convenient limit, and being liable to catch the clothing of those at work around or near it. By my invention these objections are obviated without losing any of the merits possessed by the former methods.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is-
An oven-shelf hinged to the front or side of a stove, and adapted to be raised from a perpendicular to a horizontal position by the hook or arm 0, or its equivalent, in combination with the oven-door and projecting lip B.
