Description
Filed oct. 17, 1935 l mi@ da? oww www W# HMA e, Mm w57 Patented Sept. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE WATERTIGHT BOX CONNECTER Application October 17, 1935, Serial No. 45,408
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in Water-tight connecters for electric-connection boxes.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved water-tight connecter for electric-connection boxes which will eiectively prevent the entrance of water past the cable and into the box.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved water-tight connecter formed of simple elements readily manufactured and readily assembled to produce a durable efficient construction at minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention includes all improvements over the prior art which are disclosed in this application.
In the accompanying drawing, in which one Way of carrying out the invention is shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. l is a iront elevation of a water-tight connecter made in accordance with this invention, secLu'ed to a portion of an electric-connection box;
Fig. 2 is a right-side elevation of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. l;
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the sealing-member; and
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of one of the an- Chor-members.
In the description and claims, the various parts are identied by specic names ior convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application as the prior art will permit.
Referring to the drawing, lil represents a plate or portion of an electric-connection box. The clamping-hood is preferably hollow or concave and has a cable-hole |2 therethrough. Fitting in the clamping-hood is a sealing-member I3 of readily-deformable material, preferably elastic material such as soft rubber or the like. The sealing-member I3 also has a cable-hole I4 therethrough.
Anchor-members I5 are located in the sealing-member |3 and extend through the cablehole I5a in the plate IG, and have bent ends I6 adapted to engage against the inner face I7 of the plate I and have their opposite bent ends I8 provided with threaded openings I9 adapted to be threadedly engaged by the threaded shanks 20 of screws or bolts 2|. The covered electric cable 22 extends through the cable-holes in the clamping-hood, sealing-member and plate ID.
By adjusting the screws 2| to the desired degree, the clamping-hood Il crowds or compresses the sealing-member I3 tightly against the outer face 23 of the plate Iii to render water-tight, the area of engagement of the' sealing-member I3 with the plate li] around the cable-hole |53, and also crowds or compresses the sealing-member |3 into close Water-tight engagement with the surface of the cable 22.
In applying the Water-tight connecter to the plate i5 of a box, the bent ends i6 of the anchormembers i5 can be readily sprung toward one another to have their extreme ends pass through the cable-hole I5a of the plate IS, owing to the elastic nature oi the sealing-member |3 in which the anchor-members i5 are embedded. Then, after the ends I6 have been properly inserted through the opening i the cable 22 can be 15 passed through the cable-holes in the parts of the device, and the screws 2| can be operated to seal water-tight, the areas of engagement between the sealing-member |3 and the cable 22 and between the sealing-member E and the plate lil, to thus provide a water-tight construction that will prevent leakage of water into the electric-connection box on which it is used. The anchormembers i5 and screws 2| constitute adjustable clamping-means. 25
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than that herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
