The invention relates to a sharpener tool and more especially to an ice skate sharpener.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein a sharpening slab or slabs can be conveniently held so that the same will operate upon the skate blade through hand manipulation for convenient sharpening thereof, the tool being of a kind that the same can be carried in the pocket of a user so as to be handy and ready for immediate use and thereby obviating the delay and expense when necessity requires the delivery of the skates to an artificer or a shop specializing in the sharpening of skates.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the construction of the same is novel in form in that a sharpening slab or stone will be properly held for the application thereof and the sharpening of a blade of a skate without excessive labor on the part of the user of such tool and the skate blade can be hollow ground or sharpened with a straight edge and the tool is susceptible for the holding of fine or coarse sharpening stones or slabs which may be readily placed in position for service.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, readily and easilyhandled, capable of being carried on the person, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be. hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended,

Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1- to 3 inclusive, the tool in this preferred construction comprises a sharpening stone holder A which is preferably formed from a single piece of sheet material, such as metal, bent on itself to provide opposed side cheeks l0, these being outstruck laterally to form half oval shaped portions l-l= which in their matched relation accommodate a sharpening stone I2 which in cross section is of substantially oval form. Beneaththe portions II are the separated guides I3- accommodating therebetween a skate blade, a portion of the same being indicated at I4, so that contact of this blade will be had with the stone 12' within the holder A so -that on reciprocation of the latter the skating edge of the blade I4 can be hollow ground or sharpened.

hand grip- I5 so that the holder can be grasped by the hand of a user for manipulating it in a reciprocatory' manner for the sharpening of the skating edge of the blade I4 as should be apparent from Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The guides l3 are folded outwardly and upwardly over the portions I I and each folded portion has the fluted edge I6 having-contact with the portion I I adjacent thereto or suitably made fast thereto for the strengthening of the guides I3.

Between the cheeks I0 and fitting the portions I I at one end of the holder A is a permanent end piece II while at the other end of this holder between the cheeks I0 and fitting the portions II is a removable end piece I8, it having attaching arms is for fasteners 20, these being engaged in the cheeks while the arms I9 lie outside of said. cheeks. Located between the end piece I8 and the.

stone I2 is a coiled spring 2| which tensions the said stone to hold it in abutting relation to. the permanent end I! as isclearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.

In Figure 4 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification wherein the side cheeks of the handle have the outstruck triangular areas 22, these matching each other and seating a sharpening stone 23 of a corresponding shape thereto within the same.

'In Figure 5 of the drawings there is shown another modification wherein the side cheeks are squared at the outstruck areas 24 so that a rectangular shaped sharpening stone 25 can be seated in these areas.

In Figure 6 of the drawings there is another modification of the invention wherein the side cheeks have the outstruck rounded areas 26 so that a circular shaped sharpening stone 2'! can be accommodated in these areas.

In Figure 7 of the drawings there is shown a still further modification of the invention wherein the side cheeks are formed with the half elliptical shaped outstruck areas 28 for the seating therein or the stone 29, it having a concaved bottom face 30 and a flat upper face 3|, respectively.

The end pieces I! and I8, each is preferably cut away at 32 to avoid interference with the edge of the blade I4 when being sharpened by the stone as within the holder.

In Figures 8, 9, and 10 of the drawings there is shown a further modification wherein the side cheeks are longitudinally divided into sections 33 and 34, respectively, these being permanently joined at one end of the holder by an end piece 35 while at the opposite end of the holder and formed with each section 34 is an ear 36 attached to the section 33 by a fastener 31. The sections 33 and 34 at their meeting edges are provided with inturned longitudinally directed flanges 38 for separating within the holder an upper sharpening stone 39 and a lower sharpening stone 40, respectively. These stones 39 and 40 can be interchanged with each other and this is had by providing a removable end piece 4|. The reason for having the'two stones or slabs 39 and 40 is .that one of these may be'a coarse grinding stone and the other a finer grinding stone. When the stone in the lowermost portion of the holder becomes worn the same can be removed and the other stone put in its place.

In Figures 11 and 12 of the drawings there is shown a further modificationwherein the areas 4| of the side checks are of a difierent shape from like areas of the preceding modified forms and these areas in the side cheeks, that is to say the cheeks of the latter, are formed with outturned flanges 42 between which are carriedseparators 43 for separating the sharpening stones 4-4 and 45, respectively, from each other, these stones are held tensioned by leaf springs 46, these being located to the removable or detachable end piece.

In Figure 13 of the drawings there is shown a still further modification wherein the areas 41 are of rectangular form to accommodate a similarly shaped sharpening stone or slab and at one end of the holder is provided the inturned end ears 48 these being cut and bent from one section of the holder.

In Figures 14 and 15 of the drawings there is shown a still further modification of the invention whereinthe holder at one end has the downturned ear or wing 49 while disposed crosswise at the'other end is a bolt or other like fastener 50 a which serves to retain the sharpening stone or slab within the holder and this modified form of holder isprovided with a flat top 5| devoid of a handle rising above the same. In Figure 16 of the drawings there is shown still further modification of the invention wherein the holder is formed with an upwardly arched top 52 and the stone 53 is seated in the laterally extended portions 54 struck outwardly from the blank from which the tool is made.

In Figure 17 of the drawings there is shown a 'still further modification wherein the side cheeks have the bulged portions 55 for the seating of a sharpening stone 56, it having a flat top face 51 and a rounded bottom face 58, the top 59 of the holder being also fiat and next to the fiat face 51 of said stone.

What is claimed is:

1. A tool of the character described comprising a holder having side cheeks provided with outwardly directed areas constituting seats and guides beneath the same, a sharpening medium held within said seats and having exposure between the guides, a permanent end piece between said cheeks, a removable end piece between said cheeks, and a tensioning medium between the sharpening medium and said removable end piece.

2. A tool of the character described comprising a holder having side cheeks provided with outwardly directed areas constituting seats and guides beneath the same, a sharpening medium held within said seats and having exposure between the guides, a permanent end piece between said cheeks, a removable end piece between said cheeks, a tensioning medium between the sharpening medium and said removable end piece, said cheeks being formed in two sections, the said sharpening medium being in two sections, and means located between the sections of the side cheeks for holding the sections of the sharpening medium separated from each other.

A tool of the character described comprising a holder having side cheeks provided with outwardly directed areas constituting seats and guides beneath the same, a sharpening medium held within said seats and having exposure between the guides, a permanent end piece between said cheeks, a removable end piece between said cheeks, a tensioning medium between the sharpening medium and said removable end piece, said cheeks being formed in two sections, the said sharpening medium being in two sections, means located between the sections of the side cheeks for holding the sections of the sharpening medium separated from each other, and a hand grip formed with said holder and rising above said areas.

A tool of the character described comprising a holder having side cheeks provided with outwardly directed areas constituting seats and guides beneath the same, a sharpening medium held within said seats and having exposure between the guides, a permanent end piece between said cheeks, a removable end piece between said cheeks, a tensioning medium between the sharpening medium and said removable end piece, said cheeks being formed in two sections,'the said sharpening medium being in two sections, means located betweenthe sections of the side cheeks for holding the sections of the sharpening medium separated from each other, a hand grip formed with said holder and rising above said areas, and outwardly and upwardly bent portions formed with the guides and overlapping said areas.
