4 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in a combined packing and display merchandise container and one of the objects of the invention is to produce a box or container which will be efficient for said stated purposes.
Another object is to produce a box of simple construction which may be made at a comparatively low cost.
A further object is to provide a box especially light in weight, quickly formed and therefore inexpensive and particularly strong and durable for the uses to which it would ordinarily be subjected.
More particularly stated the invention is designed, arranged and adapted for packing food product such as biscuits in practically air-tight, moisture-proof containers and at the same time displaying to view in a manner which will thoroughly protect said products from dust, dirt or atmospheric changes, and provide not only a novel, but convenient and sanitary means of preserving same.
The invention is hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
Which:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved packing and display box is constructed;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box when sealed and ready for shipping; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same box when used as a display container.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A indicates the blank which is divided by a plurality of creases or folding lines b and cut-out portions 0 so as to define parallel and rectangular sections I, 2, 3, and 4 which respectively form an integral bottom, side-walls, and cover as well as a display cover for the box. To form the said box or. body thereof, the blank is folded so that the fastening flap 5, at one end of said blank is brought over the other end of the blank and is secured thereto by any suitable fastening means (not disclosed in the drawing). The bottom sections are preferably adhesively secured, and an exceptionally strong container is produced, with an open top portion which may be closed, for shipping or packing purposes, by the co-operating folding covers 3 and top overlapping cover 6, creased at 1 so as to fold, when not in use, said overlapping top cover being securely fastened to the box by any suitable means, preferably by means of an adhesive sealing tape 8.
The display cover 4, which forms an integral part of the blank, is disposed underneath and in parallel relation to the top cover 6, but opensin opposite direction. The said display cover is provided with an intermediate opening or window 9, of any convenient shape or size which is closed- 5 by means of a transparent piece of material l0 preferably Cellophane, and I I is a tuck-in flap at the free end of said display cover which folds so as to engage between the packed merchandise and the adjacent side wall 2 in order to secure thesaid display cover in fixed position. When it is desired to open the said display cover, a notchjor cut-out portion I2 is provided in one of its edges, so that a finger may readily be inserted therethrough and the cover pulled open. The trans- 15 parent material In may be fixedly secured over the opening 9 by any suitable means but preferably is glued to the side walls of said cover.
The merchandise can be packed in said box in any convenient manner, but for instance, if it is desired to pack biscuits, it is the usual practice to pack them in layers, each layer being separated by a piece of cardboard, but the :top layer is preferably exposed, so as to be readily seen through the opening or window 9. For packing or shipping purposes, the said top layer is preferably covered by another piece of cardboard, and the display cover closed thereover, and the piece of blank which has been cut-out when providing for the said window 9, is inserted through the top of said opening, to protect the Cellophane while shipping and re-inforce the said box as well.
The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is de-'- sired that the present embodiment be considered as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the following claims rather than the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
What Iclaim as my invention is:- 1. A blank for a folded blank box or container consisting of a single sheet of material cut and creased to form a plurality of sections or panel portions in such manner that four of said panels form the bottom, four of said panels form the side walls'and three of said panels form the top portion including a pair of wall sections carried by opposite side walls with their free edges abutting when in closed position and a cover wall section overlying the aforesaid wall sections, and another panel wall integrally connected to theupper edge of the side wall opposite the cover wall section to extend completely over the open upper end-of the box or container and having a transparent display window therein, said last named panel wall adapted to occupy a position between said first named pair of walls of the top portion and the cover wall section for the protectionbf the transparent display window during shipment of the box or container.
2. n blank for a folded blanl; box or contalner consisting of a single sheet of material cut and creased to form a'plurality of sections or panel portions in such manner that four of said panels form the bottom, four of said panels form the side walls and three of said panels form the top portion including a pair of wall sections carried by opposite side walls with their free edges abutting when in closed position and a cover wall section overlying the aforesaid wall sections, another panel wall integrally connected to the upper edge of the side wall opposite the cover wall section to extend completely over the open upper end of the box or container and having a transparent display window therein, said last named panel wall adapted to occupy a position between said first named pair of walls of the top portion and the cover wall section for the protection of the transparent display window during shipment of the box or container and means for retaining the free swinging edge of the display panel wall in closed position rela tive to the box or container.
3. A blank for a folded blank box or container consisting of a single sheet of material cut and creased to forma plurality of sections or panel portions in such manner that four of said panels form the bottom, four of said panels form the side walls and three of said panels form the top portion including a pair of wall sections carried by opposite side walls with their free edges abutting when in closed position and a cover wall section overlying the aforesaid wall sections, another panel wall integrally connected to the upper edge of the side wall opposite the cover wall section to extend completely over the aoeavoo open upper end of the box or container and having a transparent display window therein, said last named panel wall adapted to occupy a posltion between said first named pair 01 walls of the top portion and the cover wall section for the protection of the transparent display window during shipment of the box or container, means for retaining the free swinging edge of the display panel wall in closed position relative to the box or container and a side edge of the panel wall cover having an opening therein adjacent the free swinging edge to facilitate opening of the box or container.
4. A blank for a folded blank box or container consisting at a single sheet of material cut and creased to form a plurality of sections or panel portions in such manner that four of said panels form the bottom, four of said panels form the side walls and three of said panels form the top portion including a pair of wall sections carried by opposite side walls with their free edges abutting when in closed position and a cover wall section overlying the aforesaid wall sections, another panel wall integrally connected to the upper edge of the side wall opposite the cover wall section to extend completely over the open upper end of the box or container and having a transparent display window therein, said last named panel wall adapted to occupy a position between said first named pair of walls of the top portion and the cover wall section for the protection of the transparent display window during shipment of the box or container, means for retaining the free swinging edge of the display panel wall in closed position relative to the box or container and a side edge of the panel wall cover having an opening therein adiacent the free swinging edge to facilitate opening of the box or container and the transparent display window of the panel well adapted to have a protecting element placed thereover during shipment of the box or corn tainer.
