Yeral parts are so arranged and proportioned as to form a very eiective, compact, and exceedingly small hammer which can be readily used with one hand.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a device of this kind provided with a light weight plunger and a relatively heavy housing and, by so proportioning the weights of these parts, it has been possible to practically eliminate the transmission of shocks and vibration to the arms of the operator. My invention embodies other novel features, details of construction, and arrangement of parts which are shown in the drawing and hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims.
Apparatus embodying features of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, form- -ing part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of my improved hammer;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the hammer taken along the line II-II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front view of a moded form of my invention; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the modified form of hammer, taken along the line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, and more particularly to Fig. 1, I show a housing 6 formed in two halves 'I and 8 which are secured to each other by means of screws 9. The housing is formed With a bearing I I adapted to receive a plunger I2 for reciprocation therein, and it Will be observed that the plunger has been designed to weigh as little as possible and still accomplish its work. The plunger is provided at its forward end with a head portion I3 and, at its other end, with a circular flange I5 which is disposed in a spring chamber I4 formed in the housing. The outer end of the spring chamber is threaded at I6 to receive a spring seat member I1 which is formed with a rib I8 to adjust the position of same with respect to the stop shoulder I9 provided at the forward end of the spring chamber. A compression spring 2| is interposed between the mem- 'ber I'I and the circular ange I5 and normally ,serves to hold the plunger in its forward position with the ange I5 in engagement with the stop shoulder.
In the lower portion of the housing I provide a '42 and 43 cam chamber 22 which merges into the spring chamber adjacent the front face of the circular flange I5. Bearings 23 and 24 are provided at the sides of the cam chamber to receive a cam shaft 26 which carries a cam the front face of the circular ange to move the plunger rearwardly against the action of the compression spring. The cam shaft is connected by means of a flexible cable 28 to the source of power, and is constantly driven in a counterclock- 10 Wise direction when in use. The forward end of the housing is bored at 29 to form a sleeve 3l for the head of the plunger.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 in the drawing,
I show a modied form of my invention in which l5 the plunger I2 is moved rearwardly by means of a pair of cams 36 and 31 which rotate in opposite directions and engage the circular flange I5 on two sides to eliminate a side thrust on the plunger. The cam shafts 38 and 39 are journaled in the housing 4I and provided with meshing gears respectively. This form of my invention is suited for use on heavier gage sheet metal than the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the compression spring 44 is adapted to oler a greater resistance to the action of the cams as it is formed of larger diameter wire.
While I have shown my invention in but two forms, it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modications without departing from the spirit thereof; and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art.
I claim:

In a. hammer, a housing, a plunger mounted for axial movement in said housing, a head formed on the forward end of said plunger, a circular ange formed on the other end of the plunger, a spring chamber formed in the housing in back of the plungena stop shoulder provided at the forward end of the spring chamber for engagement with the circular flange, a compression spring ,provided in the spring chamber and engaging the circular ange to yieldably A ing into the spring chamber in front of the cir- Ecular flange, a cam rotatably mounted in said cam chamber for engagement with the front face 21 for engagement with 5 resist a rearward 45 'movement of the plunger, a cam chamber merg- 2.
