'H. F. NYGARD HAND LAMP Original Filed Sept. 21, 1931 INVENTOR 1 E Nyy a/"d BY ATTORNEYS FM, 6m,
Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAND LAMP .Halvard F. Nygard, Madison, Wis., assignor to Burgess Battery Company, Freeport, 111., a corporation of Wisconsin 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in electric hand lamps and more particularly to improvements in spare bulb holders and. hangers for electric hand lamps. This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 564,074, filed September 21, 1931 now Patent No. 1,986,281, granted January 1, 1935.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fractional sectional view of a hand lamp showing the improved spare bulb holder and hanger incorporated in the end cap thereof;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the hand lamp;
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the end cap;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hanger forming a part of the end cap;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation thereof;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view thereof;
Fig. '7 is an end elevation of the spare bulb holder;
Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 9 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 10 is a plan view of a wear plate employed in the end cap; and
Fig. 11 is an end elevation thereof.
My improved and simplified hanger is attached to the end of the battery casing and is adapted to snap into both the open and closed positions froma point between the two. The battery casing I is of the usual metallic tubular type. It is closed at its lower end by means of an end cap II which is threadedly engaged with the lower end of the casing. The end cap contains a coil spring l2 which constantly urges battery l3 toward the upper end of easing Ill.
The end cap H is provided with raised areas l4, l and I6. A hanger or garter ring I! is arranged on the end cap. It is composed of heavy steel wire and has two adjacent inner ends l8 and H! which pass through lateral holes in opposite sides of raised portion l6. These holes are flush with the depressed surface between raised portions M, l5 and I6. The ends of hanger form a hinge joint with raised portion I6 and the hanger is adapted to fold into the depressed area so that the hand lamp may stand upright'on the end cap. The ends I8 and is are bent up sharply, as shown at 20 and 2| (see Figs. 5 and 6). These ends are bent up with reference to the balance of the hanger H to cause them to press against the interior surface of raised area l6 when the hanger is about onethird open.
When in this position the portions of ends l8 and I9 passing through the lateral holes in raised area I6 are thrust or pressed upward against the edges of said holes to provide sufficient frictional contact to hold the hanger in a predetermined position. In addition, this pressure against ends I8 and 19 tends to give a snap to the action of the hanger as it turns past the high points of the bent-up tips 20 and 2|. As the hanger ll moves to a closed position against the depressed portion of end cap N, there is a tendency for it to snap into such position as the bent-up'tips 20 and 2| turn over, these tips acting as cams. However, the hanger does not turn far enough to release this pressure so that there is enough friction between the bent-up tips and the end cap when the hanger is closed to keep it in that position. As the hanger is moved to a completely open position from the part-way position, it snaps open when the bentup tips 2|] and 2| turn over under the pressure supplied by the edges of the lateral holes in raised area l6 against the journaled portions of ends l8 and I9. The hanger I1 is therefore free to move in the open position, that is, when it is at right angles or at a greater angle to the plane of the bottom of end cap Since end cap H is usually made of brass or other relatively soft metal which may be drawn, it wears rapidly and is out where ends 20 and 2| make contact with it. To prevent excessive wear a thin plate 22 (see Figs. and 11) of hardened steel is inserted adjacent the interior surface of raised area Hi. This plate has a ridge 23 across the middle of it to prevent the lateral shifting of the ends I8 and I9 and thereby maintain hanger H in position.
The end cap II is also provided with an improved andsimplified spare bulb holder or clip 24 (see Figs. 7, 8 and 9). This is made of a strip of brass or other suitable sheet metal bent in the form of a shallow V. At the center thereof tongues 25 and 26 are punched into the crotch of the V between which a spare bulb 21 may be inserted and held. The holder 24 is inverted and inserted into the interior of the end cap straddling the bottom as shown in Fig. l. The end cap spring I2 which urges the battery forward is inserted over the holder which it straddles. The bottom convolution of the spiral spring l2 presses against the ends of the legs of the holder 24 adjacent the bottom of the end cap i to thereby hold it firmly in place and allow the easy removal thereof when it becomes necessary to remove the bulb therefrom.
I claim: 7
1. The combination with a hand lamp casing having a closed end, said closed end havinglateral openings therein and having a substantially rigid flat surface, of a garter ring secured to and adapted to fold against said end, said garter ring having two free ends in end to end relation passing through said openings and being journaled therein, the tips of said free ends being so bent and shaped as to exert resilient pressure against said surface when said garter ring is in a partially opened position whereby said garter ring, when operated, tends to snap into the closed or opened position, and a wear-resisting member interposed between said ends and said surface.
2. The combination of an-end cap for a hand lamp casing having an externally projecting portion in the bottom of said end cap, said projecting portion having a. substantially rigid fiat surface and having lateral openings in two opposite walls thereof, and a garter ring having two free ends in spaced, adjacent, opposed relation, said ends passing through said openings respectively and being journaled therein, said free ends being so shaped as to exert pressure against said substantially rigid fiat surface of said projecting portion when said garter ring is in partially opened position, and a combination abutment and wearresisting member, the abutment portion of said member being disposed between said free ends of said garter ring for maintaining said garter ring in position, the wear-resisting portion of said member being interposed between said free ends and said surface.
