IM PROVEM ENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,909, dated June 18, 1878; application filed April 2, 1678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MOMILLAN, of West Liberty, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire Fencing, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure lis a perspective view of the post in position, with wire attached. Fig. 2- represents the blank twisted prior to forming the v loop.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and durable post for wire-fences; and it consists, first, of a flat metal bar having its lower or ground portion turned up into a loop, wherein the plane of the metal of the loop lies at right angles to the plane of the post and,
secondly, of the manner of attaching the wire to the post.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents a flat iron bar in the form of a post-flank twisted to form the post at the point a. The rod is bent to the left and twisted until the flat portion of the twisted part lies in a plane at right angles with the plane of the upper portion. The lower portion is then bent at b, so as to form a loop or bight, B, the end being twisted back at (1 into the plane with the upper portion, and welded to it at c. This forms a post having a broad bearing to resist a strain against the Wires forming the fence, and utilizes a larger superficial area of holding-surface.
The posts are set so that the wires W pass across the edge of the post portion, and are held in place by double holding-loops N O, which hold the wires in their bight-s and the two ends of each loop passing along each side of the post are bent around the opposite side, in opposite directions to each other, as seen at r r, and firmly clasp the wire to the post.
I am aware that heretofore flat fence-posts have been made having a part of their lower portion turned at right angles to the plane of the main post, and hence I do not broadly claim that feature. I
I am also aware that loops have been passed around the main wire on each side of the post, and the opposite ends of the loop twisted together in the rear of the post; but after exposure the wire in the twist becomes oxidized, and any attempt to untwist it, with a View to removing or changing the position of the wire on the post, results in breaking the loop and its loss. To overcome this difficulty is one of the objects of my invention.
It is evident that while my double loop will bind the wire securely to the post, it can be readily opened whenever necessary without injury to the loop; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved fence-post having its lower or ground end formed into the twisted flattened loop B, substantially as set forth.
